Purpose: Prosthetic mesh is widely used for inguinal hernia repair; however, pain and stiffness can develop. This study was a prospective, multicenter, single-blind, randomized trial to assess postoperative pain and quality of life according to mesh type after inguinal hernia repair.
Methods: Forty-seven patients who underwent Lichtenstein repair for unilateral inguinal hernia with prosthetic mesh were enrolled and randomly allocated to the partially-absorbable lightweight mesh (LW group, n = 24) or heavyweight mesh group (HW group, n = 23).

Background And Aim: In some patients with ulcerative proctitis (UP), skip inflammation is noted in the right side of the colon, but little is known about its clinical course. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical course of UP with skip inflammation and the efficacy of topical 5-aminosalicylate (5-ASA) monotherapy.
Methods: This study reviewed the data of 388 patients with an initial diagnosis of UP from January 2005 to October 2015.

Background: Composite intestinal adenoma-microcarcinoid (CIAM) is a rare colorectal lesion that mostly comprises a conventional adenomatous component with a minute proportion of neuroendocrine (NE) component. Although microcarcinoids are well-recognized in the setting of chronic inflammatory disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, large intestinal microcarcinoids associated with intestinal adenoma are exceedingly rare and their clinicopathologic characteristics are yet to be elucidated. This study was performed to clarify their clinicopathologic characteristics and to review the relevant literature.

Purpose: Injection of adipose tissue-derived stem cells (ASCs) is a novel method for the treatment of complex perianal fistulas. We aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of ASCs in the treatment of complex anal fistulas not associated with Crohn's disease.
Methods: A phase II clinical trial was performed comparing two different doses of ASCs (group 1: 1 × 10 cells/mL and group 2: 2 × 10 cells/mL).

Background And Aims: CT-P13 is the first biosimilar monoclonal antibody to infliximab, and was recently approved in the European Union, Japan, Korea, and USA for all six indications of infliximab. However, studies directly assessing the biologic activity of CT-P13 versus inflximab in the context of inflammatory bowel disease [IBD] are still scanty. In the present study, we aimed to compare the biological activities of CT-P13 and infliximab with specific focus on intestinal cells so as to gain insight into the potential biosimilarity of these two agents for treatment of IBD.

Background: An adequate level of bowel preparation before colonoscopy is important. The ideal agent for bowel preparation should be effective and tolerable.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy and tolerability of polyethylene glycol with ascorbic acid and oral sulfate solution in a split method for bowel preparation.

A stapled hemorrhoidopexy (SH) is widely used for treatment of patients with grades III and IV hemorrhoids. The SH is easy to perform, is associated with less pain and allows early return to normal activities. However, complications, whether severe or not, have been reported.

α-Lipoic acid (ALA) has been reported to be effective in reducing body weight in rodents and obese patients. Our previous open trial showed that ALA may play a role in reducing weight gain in patients with schizophrenia on atypical antipsychotics. The present study evaluated the efficacy of ALA in reducing weight and BMI in patients with schizophrenia who had experienced significant weight gain since taking atypical antipsychotics.

Aim: The study was designed to assess the correlation between lymph node (LN) size and LN metastasis in patients with rectal neuroendocrine tumours (NETs).
Method: Forty patients who underwent curative resection with lymphadenectomy for a rectal NET between January 2007 and December 2012 were included. The short and long diameters of entire nodes were microscopically measured using a slide gauge.

Background: Although endoscopic submucosal dissection has been shown to be safe and effective for colorectal tumors, its clinical outcomes vary.
Objective: The aim of this study is to assess the outcomes of endoscopic submucosal dissection according to clinical indications.
Design: This is a prospective, multicenter, single-arm study.

Background: There has been no comparative study of the long-term oncological outcomes of appendiceal cancer and colon cancer. We hypothesized that the oncological outcome is worse in appendiceal cancer because perforation is more frequent than in colon cancer.
Methods: Patients with stage I-III were selected from 5046 patients with appendiceal or colon cancer, between September 2001 and June 2010.

Aims: The aim of this study was to determine whether human mutL homologue 1 (hMLH1) inactivation precedes the progression of sessile serrated lesion (SSL) into SSL with cytological dysplasia (SSL/D) and to define the histological stage at which promoter methylation and inactivation of hMLH1 occur.
Methods And Results: Using the MassARRAY EpiTYPER assay and immunohistochemistry, we examined methylation levels and the protein expression status of hMLH1 in 33 SSL/Ds with conventional epithelial dysplasia and compared the results with those of control hyperplastic polyps (HPs) and SSLs. The methylation level of hMLH1 was higher in the dysplastic component than in the non-dysplastic component of SSL/Ds (P = 0.

Purpose: Perianal lesions are common in Crohn disease, but their clinical course is unpredictable. Nevertheless, predicting the clinical course after surgery for perianal Crohn disease (PCD) is important because repeated operations may decrease patient's quality of life. The aim of this study was to predict the risk of reoperation in patients with PCD.

Background And Aims: In Western countries, tuberculous anal fistula may not be an issue because tuberculosis [TB] is not common, and this is a very rare form of extrapulmonary manifestation of TB. However in TB-endemic countries, careful diagnostic differentiation is required because the clinical features of TB anal fistula and Crohn's disease [CD] anal fistula are similar, with distinguishing features remaining unclear. We aimed to analyse the clinical features of TB versus CD anal fistulas.

Sessile serrated adenoma/polyps (SSA/Ps) usually appear flat to sessile with a smooth-appearing surface. However, macroscopic appearances of SSA/P can vary from flat-elevated to nodular and can even show a pedunculated configuration as we previously reported. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the clinicopathologic features of another under-recognized form of SSA/P which shows a depressed surface.

A previous phase II clinical trial of adipose-derived stem cell (ASC) therapy for fistulae associated with Crohn's disease, a devastating condition with a high recurrence rate, demonstrated safety and therapeutic potential with a 1-year sustained response. In the present study, 41 of the 43 phase II trial patients were followed for an additional year, regardless of response in the initial year. At 24 months, complete healing was observed in 21 of 26 patients (80.

Background: Ectopic crypts, defined as abnormally positioned crypts that have lost their orientation toward the muscularis mucosae, have been suggested to be the best defining histologic feature of traditional serrated adenoma (TSA). However, the significance of ectopic crypt formation (ECF) in the distinction between TSA and conventional adenoma (CA) has rarely been studied.
Methods: We designed this study to determine if ECF can be found in CA and its presence is exclusive to TSA.

Objectives: To investigate the clinicopathologic and endoscopic features of precursor lesions associated with traditional serrated adenomas (TSAs).
Methods: Mutation studies for BRAF, KRAS, PIK3CA, and EGFR and immunohistochemical staining for Ki-67 were performed on 107 TSAs from 104 patients.
Results: Nondysplastic hyperplastic polyp (HP) or sessile serrated adenoma/polyp (SSA/P) precursor lesions were found in 56 (52.
