Compared to most of nano-sized particles, core-shell-structured nanoflowers have received great attention as bioactive materials because of their high surface area with the flower-like structures. In this study, core-shell-structured Si-based NiO nanoflowers, Si@NiO, were prepared by a modified chemical bath deposition method followed by thermal reduction. The crystal morphology and basic structure of the composites were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), specific surface area (BET) and porosity analysis (BJT), and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES).

We developed a proximity photo-crosslinking method () with a 4-azido--ethyl-1,8-naphthalimide (AzNP) moiety that can be converted to reactive aryl nitrene species using ambient blue light-emitting diode light. Using an AzNP-conjugated HaloTag ligand (VL1), blue light-induced photo-crosslinked products of various HaloTag-conjugated proteins of interest were detected in subcellular spaces in live cells. Chemical or heat stress-induced dynamic changes in the proteome were also detected, and photo-crosslinking in the mouse brain tissue was enabled.

Confocal microscopy image analysis is a useful method for neoplasm diagnosis. Many ambiguous cases are difficult to distinguish with the naked eye, thus leading to high inter-observer variability and significant time investments for learning this method. We aimed to develop a deep learning-based neoplasm classification model that classifies confocal microscopy images of 10× magnified colon tissues into three classes: neoplasm, inflammation, and normal tissue.

Synergistic Optimization of the Thermoelectric and Mechanical Properties of Large-Size Homogeneous BiSbTe Bulk Samples via Carrier Engineering for Efficient Energy Harvesting.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

March 2022

Division of Advanced Materials Engineering and Center for Advanced Materials and Parts of Powder, Kongju National University, 275, Budae-dong, Cheonan 330-717, Chungcheongnam-do, Republic of Korea.

Manufacturing an economically viable, efficient commercial thermoelectric (TE) module is essential for power generation and refrigeration. However, mediocre TE properties, lack of good mechanical stability of the material, and significant difficulties involved in the manufacturing of large-scale powder as well as bulk samples hinder the potential applications of the modules. Herein, an economically feasible single-step water atomization (WA) is employed to synthesize BST powder (2 kg) by Cu doping within a short time and consolidated into large-scale bulk samples (500 g) for the first time with a diameter of 50 mm and a thickness of about 40 mm using spark plasma sintering (SPS).

To diagnose autism spectrum disorder (ASD), researchers have sought biomarkers whose alterations correlate with the susceptibility to ASD. However, biomarkers closely related to the pathophysiology of ASD are lacking. Even though excitation/inhibition (E/I) imbalance has been suggested as an underlying mechanism of ASD, few studies have investigated the actual ratio of glutamate (Glu) to γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) concentration in vivo.

Next Generation Battery Research Center, Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute (KERI), 12, Jeongiui-gil, Seongsan-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, 51543, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Zn-MnO batteries, using mild-acid electrolytes, are emerging as safe and cost-effective alternatives to Li-ion batteries for energy storage systems, but issues with MnO electrochemistry limit performance.
  • The dissolution of Mn ions into the electrolyte causes irreversible capacity loss and promotes the unwanted formation of zinc hydroxyl sulfate (ZHS) during prolonged use.
  • A new cell structure that includes an acid-treated carbon supportive layer (aCSL) enhances the battery's performance by providing extra reaction sites, boosting charge transfer, and allowing the recycling of dissolved Mn ions, resulting in over 3000 cycles with minimal capacity loss.

We propose a frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar estimation algorithm with high resolution and low complexity. The fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based algorithms and multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithms are used as algorithms for estimating target parameters in the FMCW radar systems. FFT-based and MUSIC algorithms have tradeoff characteristics between resolution performance and complexity.

All-inorganic metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (IPeNCs) have become one of the most promising luminescent materials for next-generation display and lighting technology owing to their excellent color expression ability. However, research on IPeNCs with stable blue emission is limited. In this paper, we report stable blue emissive all-bromide IPeNCs obtained through a modified ligand-assisted reprecipitation method using an ultraviolet (UV)-curable prepolymer as the anti-solvent at a low temperature.

The proteasome recognizes ubiquitinated proteins and can also edit ubiquitin marks, allowing substrates to be rejected based on ubiquitin chain topology. In yeast, editing is mediated by deubiquitinating enzyme Ubp6. The proteasome activates Ubp6, whereas Ubp6 inhibits the proteasome through deubiquitination and a noncatalytic effect.

An optimal size of post-embryonic root apical meristem (RAM) is achieved by a balance between cell division and differentiation. Despite extensive research, molecular mechanisms underlying the coordination of cell division and differentiation are still fragmentary. Here, we report that ORESARA 15 (ORE15), an Arabidopsis PLANT A/T-RICH SEQUENCE-AND ZINC-BINDING PROTEIN (PLATZ) transcription factor preferentially expressed in the RAM, determines RAM size.

Balanced synaptic inhibition, controlled by multiple synaptic adhesion proteins, is critical for proper brain function. MDGA1 (meprin, A-5 protein, and receptor protein-tyrosine phosphatase mu [MAM] domain-containing glycosylphosphatidylinositol anchor protein 1) suppresses synaptic inhibition in mammalian neurons, yet the molecular mechanisms underlying MDGA1-mediated negative regulation of GABAergic synapses remain unresolved. Here, we show that the MDGA1 MAM domain directly interacts with the extension domain of amyloid precursor protein (APP).

Insulin in the brain is a well-known critical factor in neuro-development and regulation of adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus. The abnormality of brain insulin signaling is associated with the aging process and altered brain plasticity, and could promote neurodegeneration in the late stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The precise molecular mechanism of the relationship between insulin resistance and AD remains unclear.

To design electrochemical interfaces for efficient electric-chemical energy interconversion, it is critical to reveal the electric double layer (EDL) structure and relate it with electrochemical activity; nonetheless, this has been a long-standing challenge. Of particular, no molecular-level theories have fully explained the characteristic two peaks arising in the potential-dependence of the EDL capacitance, which is sensitively dependent on the EDL structure. We herein demonstrate that our first-principles-based molecular simulation reproduces the experimental capacitance peaks.
