Dynapenia refers to muscle weakness related to aging and is defined as a loss of muscle strength associated with muscle quality. The purpose of this study is to identify the prevalence of dynapenia and associated risk factors by gender and age in domestic adults and to provide customized basic data for the prevention of dynapenia through its management. Based on the data from 2014 to 2019 of the Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey, 20,950 adults over the age of 20 who participated in grip strength tests and health surveys were selected as participants.

Introduction: 1,2-Dimyristoyl--glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) is a promising emulsifier for bioactive delivery systems, but its industrial applications are limited by the lack of cost-effective and scalable synthetic routes. The purpose of this study was to economically produce high-purity DMPC by replacing commonly used column chromatography methods and to evaluate the emulsifying performance.
Methods: DMPC was synthesized from -glycero-3-phosphocholine using Steglich esterification followed by sequential recrystallization from ethyl acetate and acetone.

Objectives: We developed and validated the Health Literacy Index for the Community (HLIC) to assess the health literacy of the Korean population within the framework of the Korean National Health and Nutrition and Examination Survey.
Methods: The HLIC was developed through (1) defining the conceptual framework and generating the item pool and (2) finalizing the items and identifying the cut-off value. Interviews were conducted to examine items' face validity, and a cross-sectional survey was performed to analyze the item-response theory and Rasch models to investigate the instrument's psychometric properties.

In recent years, researchers have focused on developing zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) as an alternative to Pt electrocatalysts for various applications, including water splitting, lithium-air batteries, zinc-air batteries, and fuel cells. In this study, we synthesized CoCu-ZIF to be used as a precursor in the development of cathode catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Hydrazine played a crucial role in maintaining uniformity in the development and particle size of the ZIF-67 structures.

In this study, we developed a sensitive method for monitoring α-amylase using a fluorogenic approach based on the host-guest complexation between an amphiphilic pyrenyl derivative (1) and γ-cyclodextrins (γ-CDs). The compound 1 self-assembles into nanofibrils in aqueous solutions. Upon the introduction of γ-CD, compound 1 forms an inclusion complex with it.

In this paper, two kinds of miniaturization methods for designing a compact wideband tapered slot antenna (TSA) using either fan-shaped structures only or fan-shaped and stepped structures were proposed. First, a miniaturization method appending the fan-shaped structures, such as quarter circular slots (QCSs), half circular slots (HCSs), and half circular patches (HCPs), to the sides of the ground conductor for the TSA was investigated. The effects of appending the QCSs, HCSs, and HCPs sequentially on the input reflection coefficient and gain characteristics of the TSA were compared.

Monitoring heart conditions through electrocardiography (ECG) has been the cornerstone of identifying cardiac irregularities. Cardiologists often rely on a detailed analysis of ECG recordings to pinpoint deviations that are indicative of heart anomalies. This traditional method, while effective, demands significant expertise and is susceptible to inaccuracies due to its manual nature.

Malignant melanoma represents a form of skin cancer characterized by a bleak prognosis and heightened resistance to traditional therapies. Quercetin has demonstrated notable anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and pharmacological effects across various cancer types. However, the intricate relationship between quercetin's anti-cancer properties and ganglioside expression in melanoma remains incompletely understood.

Rat animal models are widely used owing to their relatively superior cognitive abilities and higher similarity compared with mouse models to human physiological characteristics. However, their use is limited because of difficulties in establishing embryonic stem cells and performing genetic modifications, and insufficient embryological research. In this study, we established optimal superovulation and fertilized-egg transfer conditions, including optimal hormone injection concentration (≥150 IU/kg of PMSG and hCG) and culture medium (mR1ECM), to obtain high-quality zygotes and establish in vitro fertilization conditions for rats.

The aim of this study was to assess the risk of pesticide contamination in aquaculture and its impact on fishery products. We conducted an assessment of 300 samples collected from nine regions in South Korea, including various types of seafood, such as freshwater fish, marine fish, crustaceans, and shellfish. Pesticide residues in seafood were analyzed using GC-MS/MS after sample preparation using a modified QuEChERS method, revealing the presence of eight pesticides (4,4'-DDE, 4,4'-DDT, boscalid, isoprothiolane, oxadiazon, pendimethalin, thifluzamide, and trifluralin) across seven fish species (carp, far eastern catfish, crucian carp, eel, Chinese muddy loach, mirror carp, and sea bass).

The cytotoxic mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) reportedly has adverse effects on oocyte maturation and embryonic development in pigs. Recently, the interplay between cell apoptosis and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress has garnered increasing attention in embryogenesis. However, the involvement of the inositol-requiring enzyme 1 (IRE1)/c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP) pathways of unfolded protein response (UPR) signaling in DON-induced apoptosis in porcine embryos remains unknown.

This comprehensive review elucidates the multifaceted roles of paclitaxel, a key chemotherapeutic agent, in cancer therapy, with a focus on its interactions with gap junctions and related kinases. Paclitaxel, with its complex diterpene structure, mediates its anticancer effects predominantly through specific interactions with β-tubulin, instigating cell cycle arrest and triggering various cell death pathways, including apoptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, and necroptosis. The paper systematically delineates the chemical attributes and action mechanisms of paclitaxel and its analogs, underscoring their capacity to disrupt microtubule dynamics, thereby leading to mitotic arrest and subsequent cell death induction.
