Background: The treatment of chronic scapholunate dissociation (SLD) can be challenging due to several factors such as poor quality of ligament, malalignment of the carpus, limited surgical options, and risk of recurrent instability. Various surgical techniques have been developed, but there is ongoing debate regarding the optimal surgical technique. This study aimed to report the clinical and radiological outcomes after dorsal scapholunate (SL) ligament complex reconstruction using suture tape-augmented autologous tendon graft.

We aimed to compare the associations of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) with coronary artery calcification (CAC). Patients who simultaneously underwent ultrasonography to diagnose hepatic steatosis and cardiac computed tomography to detect CAC were included. The presence and severity of CAC were defined with CAC-score thresholds of > 0 and > 300, respectively, and patients were divided into the following groups: no MASLD or MAFLD (reference), MASLD-only, MAFLD-only, and overlapping groups.

PD-L1 as a Biomarker for the Efficacy of Durvalumab in Stage III EGFR Mutant NSCLC.

Anticancer Res

October 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, Yeungnam University, Daegu, Republic of Korea;

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of durvalumab consolidation therapy on patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who have either mutant (EGFR M+) or wild-type (EGFR M-) epidermal growth factor receptors, specifically looking at programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression levels.
  • Of the 249 unresectable stage III NSCLC patients treated, only 12.4% had EGFR M+, with the median progression-free survival (PFS) being significantly longer in patients with high PD-L1 expression (≥50%) compared to those with EGFR M+ and low PD-L1 expression.
  • The findings suggest that durvalumab can be beneficial for EGFR M+

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of death, accounting for more than half a million deaths annually. Even worse, an increasing number of cancer cases are diagnosed yearly, and two and a half million new cancer cases are estimated to be diagnosed in 2035. Some antipsychotic drugs, especially those targeting dopamine receptor (DR) D2, demonstrated anticancer activity.

This study investigated the effects of ascochlorin (ASC), a natural compound derived from the fungus , on adipogenesis and obesity. We determined the effects of ASC on 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and whether it ameliorated to mitigate high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity in C57BL/6J mice. We found that ASC significantly inhibited the differentiation of preadipocytes by modulating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, a key regulator of adipogenic processes.

Background: The superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) is crucial for the structural integrity and dynamics of facial expressions and is a particularly important consideration during facelift surgeries. This study investigated the anatomical structure and continuity of the SMAS at the site where the zygomaticus major (Zmj) originates, which is where the SMAS extends from the lateral to the anterior aspects of the face. Knowledge of these aspects is crucial for understanding the mechanics of facial movements and also the aging process.

Smoking is associated with elevated low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. However, the accuracies of the Friedewald, Sampson, and Martin LDL-C-estimating equations based on smoking status are unclear. We analyzed the accuracy of LDL-C levels estimated using these three equations based on tobacco and electronic cigarette smoking status.

Article Synopsis
  • Smoking cessation can lead to weight gain, which may increase the risk of developing metabolic syndrome (MS), but results on this relationship have been inconsistent in previous studies.
  • A meta-analysis of 24 relevant studies found that ex-smokers had a higher risk of MS compared to active smokers, while the risk was not significantly different for male ex-smokers.
  • The analysis indicated that the risk of MS in men increased if the cessation period was 15 years or less but slightly decreased if the cessation period extended beyond 15 years.

Prostaglandin E (PGE) interacts with four specific G protein-coupled receptors, namely EP1, EP2, EP3, and EP4, playing a pivotal role in determining the fate of cells. Our previous findings highlighted that stimulating the EP4 receptor with its agonist, CAY10598, triggers apoptosis in colon cancer HCT116 cells the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This process also reduces the phosphorylation of the oncogenic protein JAK2 and leads to its degradation in these cells.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the importance of MRI response evaluations during chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for patients with cervical adenocarcinoma to predict outcomes.
  • A retrospective analysis of 102 patients showed that those with a tumor volume reduction rate (TVRR) of 81.8% or higher had significantly better progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) rates, along with lower locoregional recurrence (LRR) and distant metastasis (DM) rates.
  • The findings suggest that mid-treatment MRI assessments can provide valuable prognostic information, highlighting the relationship between tumor response and survival outcomes in cervical adenocarcinoma patients.
