The circadian clock regulates the daily pattern of temporal gene expression. In Arabidopsis, aging is associated with a shortening of the endogenous period of circadian rhythms under circadian conditions. However, the functional link between the circadian clock and aging under diurnal conditions and its physiological relevance remain elusive.

Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) accurately measures plasma aldosterone concentration (PAC), but its correlation with radioimmunoassay (RIA), equivalent RIA levels, and optimal cutoff for PAC and aldosterone-to-renin ratio (ARR) in primary aldosteronism (PA) screening have not been determined in a Korean population. Our study of 127 patients who underwent diagnostic testing for PA showed that the LC-MS/MS and RIA methods have good correlation, with a mean bias of 29.3% for PAC.

NRF2 signaling and amino acid metabolism in cancer.

Free Radic Res

October 2024

College of Pharmacy, The Catholic University of Korea, Bucheon, Republic of Korea.

Alterations in amino acid metabolism have emerged as a critical component in cancer biology, influencing various aspects of tumor initiation, progression, and metastasis. This review explores how amino acids, beyond their role as protein building blocks, are essential for redox balance, cell proliferation, metastasis, signaling/epigenetic regulation, and tumor microenvironment modulation in cancer. We particularly focus on the intricate relationship between amino acid metabolism and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) signaling, a master regulator of oxidative stress response that frequently hyperactivated in cancer.

In this study, a phytochemical investigation on the methanol extract of Potentilla chinensis led to the isolation of eleven triterpenoids including ursolic acid (1), pomolic acid (2), tormentic acid (3), 2-epi-corosolic acid (4), 3-epi-corosolic acid (ECA, 5), 3β-hydroxyurs-11-en-13β(28)-olide (6), euscaphic acid (7), 2-epi-tormentic acid (8), corosolic acid (9), uvaol (10), and 3-O-acetylpomolic acid (11). Among them, ECA (5) showed potential anti-osteoclastogenic activity. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first isolation of ECA (5) from P.

The Effects of Nanoplastics on the Dopamine System of Cerebrocortical Neurons.

Int J Toxicol

January 2025

Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Daegu Catholic University, Gyeongsan, Republic of Korea.

Nanoplastics (NPx) can enter living organisms, including humans, through ecosystems, inhalation, and dermal contact and can be found from the intestine to the brain. However, it is unclear whether NPx accumulates and affects the dopamine system. In this study, we investigated the effects of NPx on the dopamine system in cultured murine cerebral cortex neurons.

The challenges associated with liquid biopsy of colorectal cancer (CRC) are closely linked to the substantial variations observed in gene expression profiles among patients. This variability complicates the selection of an ideal biomarker for accurate diagnosis. In this report, we propose that employing a combination of miRNAs offers a better change for enhancing the accuracy of CRC diagnosis compared to solely relying on single miRNAs.

Article Synopsis
  • - This study aimed to explore how regular physical activity (PA) before and after a dementia diagnosis affects the risk of death, with a focus on different levels of exercise intensity (light, moderate, vigorous).
  • - Researchers analyzed data from over 60,000 individuals diagnosed with dementia using health examination records and found that higher PA levels were significantly linked to lower mortality risk, with those maintaining regular activity having the lowest risk.
  • - The results indicated that starting any form of PA after a dementia diagnosis led to at least a 20% reduction in mortality risk, suggesting that encouraging physical activity could improve survival for those with dementia.

Effects of puerarin on gait disturbance in a 6-hydroxydopamine mouse model of Parkinson's disease.

Pharmacol Rep

February 2025

Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Daegu Catholic University, 13-13 Hayang-Ro, Hayang-Eup, Gyeongsan, Gyeongbuk, 38430, Republic of Korea.

Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder caused by dopamine (DA) neuronal dysfunction. Although DA agonists and N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) antagonists are used to treat PD, chronic use causes severe side effects. Puerarin (PUE) is a natural bioactive compound that affects the DA system; however, its effect on PD-associated motor functions is unknown.

Background And Objectives: Complete preservation of the splenic vessels is ideal during laparoscopic spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy (LSPDP). However, this remains challenging and time-consuming because the vessels are often deeply embedded in the pancreatic parenchyma. Herein, we introduce our inferior-medial approach to laparoscopic splenic vessel-preserving distal pancreatectomy (lap-SVPDP) and evaluate its safety and feasibility.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem characterized by progressive renal fibrosis and excessive extracellular matrix deposition. Oxidative stress and epigenetic regulation, particularly through microRNAs (miRNAs), play crucial roles in the pathogenesis of CKD. In this study, we investigated the role of urinary miR-144-3p, which is upregulated in rats with CKD induced by diabetes and hypertension, in renal fibrosis progression, particularly its regulation of the nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway.

  • A study was conducted to explore Korean clinicians' knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to using neuromodulators and psychiatric treatments for functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs).
  • The survey included 451 clinicians from various hospital tiers, revealing that while a high percentage recognized the need for these treatments, many were unfamiliar with prescribing neuromodulators and referred few patients for psychiatric care.
  • Results indicated a significant gap in knowledge and prescribing practices between primary care clinicians and gastroenterologists, highlighting the need for further education on this topic.

  • - The K-REDEFINE study examined Heart Rate Turbulence (HRT) and T-wave alternans (TWA) as potential markers for predicting serious heart conditions in South Korean patients with acute myocardial infarction (MI) or heart failure (HF).
  • - The results showed that abnormal HRT was a strong predictor of adverse cardiac events, including cardiac death and hospitalizations due to heart failure, with a particularly high predictive value when combined with a reduced ejection fraction.
  • - In contrast, abnormal TWA was only associated with the overall risk of cardiac events and did not show as strong a predictive capability as HRT in this study.

  • Gabapentinoids, like gabapentin (GBP) and pregabalin (PGB), are used to treat neuropathic pain from lumbar radiculopathy, but there’s limited research comparing their effectiveness.
  • A meta-analysis reviewed studies from 1960 to 2023, finding that PGB significantly reduced pain compared to GBP in the short term (up to 6 weeks), but both were similar in efficacy for long-term relief (6-12 weeks).
  • The analysis showed no significant difference in adverse effects between GBP and PGB, which can help physicians make informed prescribing decisions for lumbar radiculopathy.
