Impaired Cognitive Function and Altered Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity in Mice Lacking Dermatan Sulfotransferase Chst14/D4st1.

Front Mol Neurosci

February 2019

Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Cerebral Diseases, Department of Physiology, Dalian Medical University, Dalian, China.

Chondroitin sulfate (CS) and dermatan sulfate (DS) proteoglycans (PGs) are major extracellular matrix (ECM) components of the central nervous system (CNS). A large body of evidence has shown that CSPGs/DSPGs play critical roles in neuronal growth, axon guidance, and plasticity in the developing and mature CNS. It has been proposed that these PGs exert their function through specific interaction of CS/DS chains with its binding partners in a manner that depends on the sulfation patterns of CS/DS.

Stromal cell populations in the tumor microenvironment (TME) play a critical role in the oncogenesis and metastasis of renal cell carcinoma. In this study, we found that there are α-smooth muscle actin positive (α-SMA (+)) cells in the stroma of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) tissues, and their numbers are significantly associated with poor survival in ccRCC patients. Interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a critical diver that induces α-SMA (+) cells in ccRCC tissues via promotion of epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and stimulates migration and invasion in ccRCC.

Article Synopsis
  • Scientists studied a new substance called 7-O-geranylquercetin (GQ) to see how it affects lung cancer cells, specifically two types: A549 and NCI-H1975.
  • They found that GQ made cancer cells die without hurting normal lung cells and worked by changing certain proteins important for cell death and survival.
  • The study shows that GQ could be a useful treatment for lung cancer because it causes cancer cells to die and promotes another process called autophagy, which helps clean out damaged parts of the cells.

Development of a Functional Glomerulus at the Organ Level on a Chip to Mimic Hypertensive Nephropathy.

Sci Rep

August 2016

Department of Nephrology, The First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, Key Laboratory of Kidney Disease of Liaoning Province, The Center for the Transformation Medicine of Kidney Disease of Liaoning Province, No. 222 Zhongshan Road, Dalian 116011, China.

Glomerular hypertension is an important factor exacerbating glomerular diseases to end-stage renal diseases because, ultimately, it results in glomerular sclerosis (especially in hypertensive and diabetic nephropathy). The precise mechanism of glomerular sclerosis caused by glomerular hypertension is unclear, due partly to the absence of suitable in vitro or in vivo models capable of mimicking and regulating the complex mechanical forces and/or organ-level disease processes. We developed a "glomerulus-on-a-chip" (GC) microfluidic device.

Previous studies have suggested that jumonji AT-rich interactive domain 1B (JARID1B) plays an important role in the genesis of some types of cancer, and it is therefore considered to be an important drug target protein. Although the expression of JARID1B has been researched in some types of cancer, little is known about JARID1B expression in glioma and its function in the tumorigenesis of gliomas. In the present study, we examined the expression of JARID1B in glioma.

Scorpion venom has been used in the Orient to treat central nervous system diseases for many years, and the protein/peptide toxins in Buthus martensii Karsch (BmK) venom are believed to be the effective components. Scorpion venom heat-resistant peptide (SVHRP) is an active component of the scorpion venom extracted from BmK. In a previous study, we found that SVHRP could inhibit the formation of a glial scar, which is characterized by enhanced glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) expression, in the epileptic hippocampus.
