Microbubbles (MB) are widely used as contrast agents for ultrasound (US) imaging and US-enhanced drug delivery. Polymeric MB are highly suitable for these applications because of their acoustic responsiveness, high drug loading capability, and ease of surface functionalization. While many studies have focused on using polymeric MB for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, relatively little attention has thus far been paid to improving their inherent imaging and drug delivery features.

Background: Female mice are more resistant to obesogenic effects of a high-fat diet (HFD), compared to male mice. Although the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood, sex hormones seem to play an important role. Interestingly, the activity of the oestrogen receptor-α (ERα) is affected by the calcium-sensing-receptor (CaSR).

The transport and clogging behavior of flexible particles in confined flows is a complex interplay between elastic and hydrodynamic forces and wall interactions. While the motion of non-spherical particles in unbounded flows is well understood, their behavior in confined spaces remains less explored. This study introduces a coupled computational fluid dynamics-discrete element method (CFD-DEM) approach to investigate the transport and clogging dynamics of flexible rod-shaped particles in confined pore constrictions.

Separation of equally sized particles distinguished solely by material properties remains still a very challenging task. Here a simple separation of differently charged, thermo-responsive polymeric particles (for example microgels) but equal in size, via the combination of pressure-driven microfluidic flow and precise temperature control is proposed. The separation principle relies on forcing thermo-responsive microgels to undergo the volume phase transition during heating and therefore changing its size and correspondingly the change in drift along a pressure driven shear flow.

Endothelium, the lining in this blood vessel, orchestrates three main critical functions such as protecting blood components, modulating of hemostasis by secreting various inhibitors, and directing clot digestion (fibrinolysis) by activating tissue plasminogen activator. No other surface can perform these tasks; thus, the contact of blood and blood-contacting medical devices inevitably leads to the activation of coagulation, often causing device failure, and thromboembolic complications. This perspective, first, discusses the biological mechanisms of activation of coagulation and highlights the efforts of advanced coatings to recapitulate one characteristic of endothelium, hereafter single functions of endothelium and noting necessity of the synergistic integration of its three main functions.

The ability to correlate the structure of a molecule with its properties is the key to the rational and accelerated design of new functional compounds and materials. Taking photoswitches as an example, the thermal stability of the metastable state is a crucial property that dictates their application in molecular systems. Indigos have recently emerged as an attractive motif for designing photoswitchable molecules due to their red-light addressability, which can be advantageous in biomedical and material applications.

Biomedical applications such as drug delivery, tissue engineering, and functional surface coating rely on switchable adsorption and desorption of specialized guest molecules. Poly(dehydroalanine), a polyzwitterion containing pH-dependent positive and negative charges, shows promise for such reversible loading, especially when integrated into a gel network. Herein, we present the fabrication of poly(dehydroalanine)-derived gels of different size scales and evaluate them with respect to their practical use in biomedicine.

In this study, we present a new synthesis methodology based on photo-crosslinking-assisted continuous precipitation polymerization which allows controlling the distribution of crosslinks in microgels. In our approach we substituted conventional crosslinking agent by a comonomer carrying photo-crosslinkable 4-oxocyclopent-2-en-1-yl group. Microgel size, morphology, distribution of crosslinks and packing density of the polymer chains are studied as a function of retention time (Rt) in the flow reactor.

Despite recent advances in the field of tissue engineering, the development of complex tissue-like structures in vitro is compromised by the lack of integration of a functioning vasculature. In this study, we propose a mesoscale three-dimensional (3D) in vitro vascularized connective tissue model and demonstrate its feasibility to prompt the self-assembly of endothelial cells into vessel-like structures. Moreover, we investigate the effect of perfusion on the organization of the cells.

A novel scaffold design has been created to enhance tissue engineering and regenerative medicine by optimizing the controlled, prolonged release of Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF), a powerful chemoattractant for endogenous mesenchymal stem cells. We present a new stacked scaffold that is made up of three different fibrin gel layers, each of which has HGF integrated into the matrix. The design attempts to preserve HGF's regenerative properties for long periods of time, which is necessary for complex tissue regeneration.

Electrochemical reduction of CO poses a vast potential to contribute to a defossilized industry. Despite tremendous developments within the field, mass transport limitations, carbonate salt formation, and electrode degradation mechanisms still hamper the process performance. One promising approach to tweak CO electrolysis beyond today's limitations is pulsed electrolysis with potential cycling between an operating and a regeneration mode.

Polymer mechanochemistry utilizes mechanical force to activate latent functionalities in macromolecules and widely relies on ultrasonication techniques. Fundamental constraints of frequency and power intensity have prohibited the application of the polymer mechanochemistry principles in a biomedical context up to now, although medical ultrasound is a clinically established modality. Here, a universal polynucleotide framework is presented that allows the binding and release of therapeutic oligonucleotides, both DNA- and RNA-based, as cargo by biocompatible medical imaging ultrasound.

Natural photoactive systems have evolved to harness broad-spectrum light from solar radiation for critical functions such as light perception and photosynthetic energy conversion. Molecular photoswitches, which undergo structural changes upon light absorption, are artificial photoactive tools widely used for developing photoresponsive systems and converting light energy. However, photoswitches generally need to be activated by light of specific narrow wavelength ranges for effective photoconversion, which limits their ability to directly work under sunlight and to efficiently harvest solar energy.

Coupling renewable electricity to reduce carbon dioxide (CO) electrochemically into carbon feedstocks offers a promising pathway to produce chemical fuels sustainably. While there has been success in developing materials and theory for CO reduction, the widespread deployment of CO electrolyzers has been hindered by challenges in the reactor design and operational stability due to CO crossover and (bi)carbonate salt precipitation. Herein, we design asymmetrical bipolar membranes assembled into a zero-gap CO electrolyzer fed with pure water, solving both challenges.

The distinct folding accompanied by its polymorphic character renders DNA G-quadruplexes promising biomolecular building blocks to construct novel DNA-based and supramolecular assemblies. However, the highly polar nature of DNA limits the use of G-quadruplexes to water as a solvent. In addition, the archetypical G-quadruplex fold needs to be stabilized by metal-cations, which is usually a potassium ion.

Continuous-flow biocatalysis utilizing immobilized enzymes emerged as a sustainable route for chemical synthesis. However, inadequate biocatalytic efficiency from current flow reactors, caused by non-productive enzyme immobilization or enzyme-carrier mismatches in size, hampers its widespread application. Here, we demonstrate a general-applicable and robust approach for the fabrication of a high-performance enzymatic continuous-flow reactor via integrating well-designed scalable isoporous block copolymer (BCP) membranes as carriers with an oriented and productive immobilization employing material binding peptides (MBP).

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is a diagnostic modality that combines the high contrast resolution of optical imaging with the high tissue penetration of ultrasound. While certain endogenous chromophores can be visualized via PA imaging, many diagnostic assessments require the administration of external probes. Anisotropic gold nanoparticles are particularly valued as contrast agents, since they produce strong PA signals and do not photobleach.
