Background: Endothelial hyper-permeability with plasma leakage and thrombocytopenia are predominant features of severe dengue virus infection. It is well established that heparanase, the endothelial glycocalyx degrading enzyme, plays a major role in various diseases with vascular leakage. It is yet to be elucidated whether heparanase activity plays a major role in dengue-associated plasma leakage.

Background: The association between short stature, undernutrition and the risk to cardiovascular disease has been clinically established. Genetic factor, particularly the variants in cytochrome b-245 alpha chain () gene, which alter the formation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase level, might affect arterial function. This study aimed to observe the association between single nucleotide variants (SNVs) of the gene and the arterial function of short stature children to understand the reason why some people with short stature develop cardiovascular disease.

Psychiatric symptoms are prevalent in people living with HIV (PLWH), especially depression, anxiety, impulsivity, and substance use. Various biological mechanisms might play a role in the occurrence of psychiatric symptoms in this population. A hypothesis free, data-driven metabolomics approach can further our understanding of these mechanisms.

Besides seizure control, quality of life (QoL) should be considered as an equally important outcome for epilepsy surgery service providers. The paucity of QoL reports from developing countries has enlarged the representation gap between wealthy countries and countries with fewer resources. In this study, we evaluated postoperative QoL in the Indonesian drug-resistant epilepsy cohort where the epilepsy surgery service faces limited resource availability.

Background: Genetics play a significant role in coagulation phenotype and venous thromboembolism risk. Resistance to the anticoagulant activated protein C (APC) is an established risk for thrombosis. Herein, we explored the genetic determinants of thrombin generation (TG) and thrombomodulin (TM)-modulated TG using plasma from the Human Functional Genomics Project.

Introduction: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a rare and aggressive head and neck squamous cell carcinoma worldwide. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) have been studied and reported to be effective targets of drugs on cancer and were related to the prognostic value. The aim of the study was to look systematically into the current literature and carefully analyze the results to explore the relationship of TILs and NPC.

Background: Considerable variation exists in platelet reactivity to stimulation among healthy individuals. Various metabolites and metabolic pathways influence platelet reactivity, but a comprehensive overview of these associations is missing. The gut microbiome has a strong influence on the plasma metabolome.

Determining the causative pathogen(s) of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children remains a challenge despite advances in diagnostic methods. Currently available guidelines generally recommend empiric antimicrobial therapy when the specific etiology is unknown. However, shifts in epidemiology, emergence of new pathogens, and increasing antimicrobial resistance underscore the importance of identifying causative pathogen(s).

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are increasingly recognized to play a role in the pathogenesis of viral infections, including dengue. NETs can be formed NADPH oxidase (NOX)-dependently or NOX-independently. NOX-independent NETs can be induced by activated platelets and are very potent in activating the endothelium.

Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Initially, COVID-19 is a disease that attacks the respiratory tract, but now the clinical manifestations of COVID-19 are various, including acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Emergency surgeries such as mechanical thrombectomy (MT) for AIS must be performed without any delay even during the COVID-19 pandemic, to reduce morbidity and mortality.

The objective of this study was to assess the association between the expression of miR- 150, hsa-let-7e, and miR-146a on cytokine expression during dengue infection. Dengue virus (DENV) strain SJN-006, a serotype 2 DENV strain of the Cosmopolitan genotype, isolated in Bali, Indonesia, was used to infect peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) isolated from healthy individuals.

Smoking is one of the most important causes of mortality and morbidity in the world, as it is related to the risk factor and etiology of respiratory-tract diseases. Long-term smoking causes both structural and functional damage in the respiratory airways, leading to changes in nasal mucociliary clearance (NMC). The aim of the present study was to look systematically into the current literature and carefully collect and analyze results to explore NMC in smokers.

Background: There is a high incidence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) among cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. Chemotherapy-induced vascular endothelial cell activation (VECA) is characterized by increased plasma levels of von Willebrand factor (vWF) and soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin), leading to the activation of endothelial cells and signaling cascades. The biological role of a disintegrin-like and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS-13) is to control the activity of vWF and consequently the risk of thrombosis.

Background: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a frequent complication in cancer patients and is the second leading cause of death. The high level of C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase reactant that induces tissue factor (TF) expression in monocytes, smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells. The CRP level positively correlates with the incidence, extension, and volume of thrombus.

Background: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is often overlooked as an etiology of fever in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Lack of diagnostic testing capacity in these areas combined with co-circulation of clinically similar pathogens such as dengue virus (DENV), hinders CHIKV diagnosis. To better address CHIKV in Indonesia, an improved understanding of epidemiology, clinical presentation, and diagnostic approaches is needed.

Background: Birth weight is very important for long-term physical, mental, health, and brain development. Pesticide exposure is thought to interfere with fetal growth, among others, through disruption of the function of the insulin-like growth hormone-1 (IGF-1) hormone.
Objective: To analyze the relationship between exposure to pesticides during pregnancy and low-birth weight (LBW) through the disruption of the IGF-1 hormone.
