The presence of sulfate in anaerobic reactors can trigger competitive and syntrophic interactions between various groups of microorganisms, such as sulfate reducers, methanogens and acetogens. In order to steer the reactor process in the direction of sulfidogenesis or methanogenesis, it is essential to get insight into the population dynamics of these groups of microorganisms upon changes in the reactor operating conditions. Several methods exist to characterize and quantify the microbial sludge composition.

The aim of this study was to improve production level of llama heavy chain antibody fragments (V(HH)) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae while retaining functional characteristics. For this purpose, the DNA shuffling technique was used on llama V(HH) fragments specific for the azo-dye reactive red-6. In the DNA shuffling process, three parental llama V(HH) with high amino acid sequence identity with significant differences in production and functional characteristics were used.

An experiment was performed to develop a model to study the impact of stress on responsiveness to infection with bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV1) in veal calves. Social isolation after previous group-housing was used as a putatively stressful treatment. Synthetic polymers were examined for their potency to enhance mucosal immune responses to inactivated antigens. Aqueous solutions of polyacrylic acid with a MW of 450 kDa (p[AA]) or an butyl-ester thereof with 16% esterification (Butyl16-p[AA]) plus antigen were administered twice intranasally in mice with a 2 week interval. The frequency of IgA-antibody secreting cells (ASCs) in lung cell suspensions was determined 1 week after the second immunisation.

Functional heavy chain immunoglobulins have, so far, only been found in camels and llamas. Antigen-specific fragments of these heavy chain IgGs (V(HH)) are of great interest in biotechnology because they are very stable and can be produced at high level by the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The effect on meat quality characteristics of stress, applied during a short period just before stunning, was studied on slaughterpigs (113 boars, 85 gilts). Sexes were kept separately and only pigs that had been stunned correctly were included. Aggressive behaviour during lairage occurred more frequently in boars (about twice) than in gilts.

Lean weight is related to muscle fiber number. Muscle fiber formation (myogenesis) occurs only during embryonic development when it is under the control of the MyoD gene family consisting of myogenin, MyoD1, myf-5, and myf-6. Myogenin has a central position within the MyoD gene family because myogenin expression abrogates myoblast proliferation potential and regulates the differentiation of single nucleated myoblasts into multinucleated myofibers.

To enable investigation of genetic variation during early lactation in heifers, multitrait covariance functions were used to describe genetic covariances among feed intake, live weight, and milk yield during the first 15 wk of lactation (n = 628). A data set of weekly milk yield records was used to compare different test day models for their ability to interpolate and extrapolate missing milk yields. The criteria to compare the models were 1) the (co)variance structure modeled compared with the observed (co)variance structure in the data and 2) mean square error of predictions of missing observations (MSEP), which compared the predicted value of a missing record to the known value of the record. The test day models used were LEG(m), which are Legendre polynomials with an order of fit of m, and EXP, which is an exponential lactation function.

Before fertilization, inseminated spermatozoa acquire the ability to fertilize an egg, a phenomenon called capacitation. Bovine sperm capacitation is influenced by factors originating from both the male and female genital tract, and results in intracellular and membrane changes of the spermatozoa that facilitate the induction of the acrosome reaction. However, the effects of reproductive tract secretions and capacitation on the binding of spermatozoa to the zona pellucida have not been investigated.
