The methanolic, chloroform and ether extracts of Euphorbia tirucalli latex and stem bark were evaluated for larvicidal activity against laboratory-reared larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae), vector of the brancroftian filariasis and worst urban nuisance mosquito. The latex extracts contain more potent larvicidal components (177.14 mg/L-326.

The aqueous and serially purified latex extracts of plants Euphorbia pulcherima and Euphorbia hirta (family Euphorbiaceae) have potent molluscicidal activity. Sub-lethal doses (40 and 80% of LC(50)) of aqueous and partially purified latex extracts of both the plants also significantly alter the levels of total protein, total free amino acid, nucleic acid (DNA and RNA) and the activity of enzyme protease and acid and alkaline phosphatase in nervous tissue of the snail Lymnaea acuminata in time and dose dependent manner. E.

Stigmasterol, a plant product, has been used as a surfactant to generate liquid membranes supported on a cellulose acetate matrix. Electrochemical characterization of the membrane has been attempted with a view to simulating its behavior with natural membranes by measuring membrane potentials and membrane conductance. The selectivity of cellulose acetate membrane kept in contact with magnesium chloride solutions of different mean concentrations has been found to change from anion to cation.

The possibility of electrochemical modification of cellulose acetate membrane upon immobilization of the anionic surfactant (SDS) has been explored on the basis of membrane potential studies. Surface tension measurements with and without cellulose acetate membrane were carried out to ascertain the extent of immobilization of the surfactant. Cellulose acetate membrane practically does not exhibit any ion selectivity.

Some mixed-valence Fe(II) Fe(III) complexes of thiocarboxylic acids and straight chain fatty acids with general formula [Fe(II)Fe(III)(2)O(SOCR)(6)(H(2)O)(3)] and [Fe(II)Fe(III)(2)O(SOCR)(3)(OOCR')(3)(CH(3)OH)(3)] (where, R=CH(3) or C(6)H(5) and R'=C(13)H(27), C(15)H(31) or C(17)H(35)) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, spectral (infrared, electronic and Mössbauer) studies, molar conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The infrared spectra suggested bridging nature of carboxylate and thiocarboxylate anions along with upsilon(asym)(Fe(3)O) vibrations in the complexes. Mössbauer studies revealed two resolved quadrupole doublets at 120-315 K confirming the presence of Fe(II) and Fe(III) moieties in the complexes.

Freshwater mud eel, Amphipnous cuchia, were injected intraperitoneally daily with 100 ng of vitamin D3/100 g body weight and maintained in media containing either no calcium or different calcium concentrations. The eels were killed after 1, 3, 5, 10 and 15 days following the treatment and their serum calcium levels were measured. The ultimobranchial glands were fixed and processed using the routine paraffin method for histological studies.

Exposure of fish over 96 h to 40 and 80% of LC(50) (24 h) of aqueous latex extracts of Euphorbia royleana and Jatropha gossypifolia of family Euphorbiaceae significantly altered the level of total protein, total free amino acids, nucleic acids, pyruvate, lactate, glycogen and as well as protease activity also in muscle, liver and gonadal tissue of the fish Channa punctatus. The alterations in all the biochemical parameters were significantly dose-dependent. Withdrawal study also shows that there is a partial recovery in the levels of glycogen, pyruvate, lactate and nucleic acids, but nearly complete recovery in total protein, total free amino acids level and protease activity in all the three tissues of the fish after the 7th day of the withdrawal of treatment, which supports the view that the plant product is safer in use as pesticides for control of common weed fishes in culture ponds.
