Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Bipolar disorder (BD) is a complex mental health condition, and researchers aimed to identify a neurodevelopmental phenotype (NDP) that contributes to its development and impacts clinical outcomes.
  • By analyzing data from over 4,400 BD patients, they established nine specific clinical features that characterize this NDP, which are linked to poorer prognosis and treatment responses.
  • The findings suggest that patients with a higher NDP load may have overlapping genetic factors with ADHD, indicating a potential shared biological basis for these disorders.

  • Community care replaced institutional care for people with psychosis, but the lack of effective treatment guidelines has led to higher rates of criminal convictions among these individuals in Sweden and other countries.
  • Recent research highlights effective strategies to reduce aggressive and antisocial behavior (AABC) in patients with psychosis, emphasizing the importance of regular psychiatric support, specific medications, and abstinence from substances.
  • The failure to implement evidence-based practices hinders patients' ability to live independently and safely in the community, while also posing risks to public safety, underscoring the need for better assessment and intervention strategies.

Identifying Bridge Symptoms Between Borderline Personality Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Network Analysis From a National Cohort.

J Clin Psychiatry

September 2024

Service de Psychiatrie et Addictologie de l'adulte et du sujet âgé, DMU Psychiatrie et Addictologie, Hôpital Corentin-Celton, GHU APHP.Centre, Issy-les Moulineaux, France.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) share common risk factors, including exposure to traumatic events. We aim to estimate networks of BPD and PTSD to describe the interactions between the symptoms of these 2 disorders and identify bridging symptoms between the 2 diagnoses that may play critical roles in their co-occurrence. We performed a network analysis of data from the second wave of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC 2004-2005), a nationally representative sample of the US adult population.

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada; Mitochondrial Innovation Initiative, MITO2i, Toronto, ON, Canada; Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada. Electronic address:

Background: Nutrition is largely affected in bipolar disorder (BD), however, there is a lack of understanding on the relationship between dietary categories, BD, and the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The objective of this study is to examine dietary trends in BD and it is hypothesized that diets with increased consumption of seafood and high-fiber carbohydrates will be correlated to improved patient outcomes, and a lower frequency of metabolic syndrome.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study includes two French cohorts.

Introduction: Girls and boys presenting disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs) display differences in white matter microstructure (WMM) relative to typically developing (TD) sex-matched peers. Boys with DBDs are at increased risk for traumatic brain injuries (TBIs), which are also known to impact WMM. This study aimed to disentangle associations of WMM with DBDs and TBIs.

Article Synopsis
  • Individuals with bipolar disorders (BD) tend to have a shorter life expectancy, prompting the need for easily measurable markers of accelerated aging like BioAge, calculated from routine blood tests and physical exams.
  • In a study of 2,220 outpatients with BD, results showed that a small percentage had significant BioAge Acceleration, which is linked to factors such as young age, male sex, being overweight, and sleep issues.
  • Further research is needed to confirm these findings with different groups and explore whether improving factors like metabolic health and sleep could impact aging rates in individuals with BD.

Mitochondrial Biomarkers and Metabolic Syndrome in Bipolar Disorder.

Psychiatry Res

September 2024

Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada; Mitochondrial Innovation Initiative, MITO2i, Toronto, ON, Canada; Department of Psychiatry, University of Toronto, Toronto, ON, Canada.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the link between mitochondrial blood biomarkers, specifically lactate and circulating cell-free mitochondrial DNA, and markers of metabolic syndrome in bipolar disorder patients, hypothesizing that lactate levels would be higher in those with metabolic syndrome.
  • The research involved a large cohort of 837 stable bipolar disorder patients and 237 others for validation, revealing that higher lactate levels correlated significantly with factors like triglycerides and blood pressure, indicating a strong association with metabolic syndrome.
  • The findings suggest that while lactate is a key biomarker related to metabolic syndrome in bipolar patients, circulating mitochondrial DNA levels do not show this same correlation, highlighting the potential for personalized treatment strategies based on these metabolite profiles.

Exploring emotional regulation in insomnia with and without major depressive episode.

J Sleep Res

February 2025

Centre ChronoS, Département de psychiatrie et d'addictologie, GHU Paris Nord, DMU Neurosciences, AP-HP, Hôpital Bichat - Claude Bernard, Paris, France.

Previous studies have highlighted the pivotal role of emotional regulation impairment in the progression of depressive and insomnia disorders, individually. Nevertheless, to date, no study has undertaken a direct comparison of the emotional profiles in individuals experiencing insomnia with or without major depressive episode (MDE). In this study, our objective was to closely examine multiple aspects of emotional regulation among individuals experiencing insomnia, with or without concurrent depression.

Defining homogeneous subgroups of bipolar disorder (BD) is a major goal in personalized psychiatry and research. According to the neurodevelopmental theory, age at onset may be a key variable. As potential trait markers of neurodevelopment, cognitive and functional impairment should be greater in the early form of the disease, particularly type 1 BD (BD I).

Background: Intellectual disability (ID), schizophrenia spectrum disorder (SSD), bipolar disorder (BD), substance use disorder (SUD), and other mental disorders (OMDs) are associated with increased risks of criminality relative to sex-matched individuals without these conditions (NOIDMD). To resource psychiatric, addiction, and social services so as to provide effective treatments, further information is needed about the size of sub-groups convicted of crimes, recidivism, timing of offending, antecedents, and correlates. Stigma of persons with mental disorders could potentially be dramatically reduced if violence was prevented.

Background: Clinicians diagnosing autism rely on diagnostic criteria and instruments in combination with an implicit knowledge based on clinical expertise of the specific signs and presentations associated with the condition. This implicit knowledge influences how diagnostic criteria are interpreted, but it cannot be directly observed. Instead, insight into clinicians' understanding of autism can be gained by investigating their diagnostic certainty.
