Super-resolved 3-D imaging of live cells' organelles from bright-field photon transmission micrographs.

Ultramicroscopy

August 2017

Institute of Complex Systems, Faculty of Fisheries and Protection of Waters, University of South Bohemia, Zámek 136, 373 33 Nové Hrady, Czech Republic.

Current biological and medical research is aimed at obtaining a detailed spatiotemporal map of a live cell's interior to describe and predict cell's physiological state. We present here an algorithm for complete 3-D modelling of cellular structures from a z-stack of images obtained using label-free wide-field bright-field light-transmitted microscopy. The method visualizes 3-D objects with a volume equivalent to the area of a camera pixel multiplied by the z-height.

Choices of Stent and Cerebral Protection in the Ongoing ACST-2 Trial: A Descriptive Study.

Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg

May 2017

Department of Vascular Surgery, Policlinico di Monza, Via Amati 111, 20900 Monza, Italy.

Objective/background: Several plaque and lesion characteristics have been associated with an increased risk for procedural stroke during or shortly after carotid artery stenting (CAS). While technical advancements in stent design and cerebral protection devices (CPD) may help reduce the procedural stroke risk, and anatomy remains important, tailoring stenting procedures according to plaque and lesion characteristics might be a useful strategy in reducing stroke associated with CAS. In this descriptive report of the ongoing Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial-2 (ACST-2), it was assessed whether choice for stent and use or type of CPD was influenced by plaque and lesion characteristics.

Observables sensitive to the anomalous production of events containing hadronic jets and missing momentum in the plane transverse to the proton beams at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. The observables are defined as a ratio of cross sections, for events containing jets and large missing transverse momentum to events containing jets and a pair of charged leptons from the decay of a boson. This definition minimises experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties in the measurements.

In the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae), two sympatric strains have been recognized that have been termed corn strain (C) and rice strain (R), referring to their most common host plants. Both strains are reproductively isolated via a distinct prezygotic barrier as well as via an intriguing postzygotic phenomenon: when R females have mated with C males, the resulting RC hybrid females exhibit dramatically reduced fertility independent of their mating partner. Here, we demonstrate that the reduced fertility is caused by the fact that these females refrain from mating, that is, females are behaviorally sterile.

In this study, a novel analytical approach for the determination of 11 monohydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon metabolites (OH-PAHs) in urine was developed and validated. The rapid, simple and high-throughput sample preparation procedure based on ethyl acetate extraction and subsequent purification by dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) employing a Z-Sep sorbent is used for the first time. For the identification/quantification of target compounds, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (U-HPLC) interfaced with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was applied.

Connection of a topological surface state with the bulk continuum in Sb(2)Te(3)(0001).

Phys Rev Lett

February 2015

Experimentelle Physik VII and Röntgen Research Center for Complex Materials (RCCM), Universität Würzburg, Am Hubland, D-97074 Würzburg, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explores the relationship between the surface state of a Z(2) topological insulator and the bulk electronic structure, particularly focusing on Sb(2)Te(3)(0001) using photoemission experiments and calculations.
  • - The topological surface state (TSS) exhibits distinct features, such as a consistent spectral signature and linear dispersion, even as it interacts with the topmost valence band.
  • - Observations reveal a "kink" in the TSS dispersion and hybridization gaps, providing insight into the weak surface-bulk mixing seen in recent transport experiments on Sb(2)Te(3).

Objective: We examined the effect of relapses-before and after progression onset-on the rate of postprogression disability accrual in a progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) cohort.

Methods: We studied patients with primary progressive MS (n = 322) and bout-onset progressive MS (BOPMS) including single-attack progressive MS (n = 112) and secondary progressive MS (n = 421). The effect of relapses on time to Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) score of 6 was studied using multivariate Cox regression analysis (sex, age at progression, and immunomodulation modeled as covariates).

A sensitive capillary electrophoretic method featuring spectrophotometric detection using a commercial Z-cell was devised for the assay of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG) in human urine. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) based on hydrophilic-lipophilic-balanced RP sorbent was utilized for urine sample pretreatment and analyte preconcentration. The separation was carried out in conventional fused-silica capillaries employing a Z-cell with hydrodynamic sample injection (at 50 mbar for 12 s).

Novel series of bispyridinium compounds bearing a (Z)-but-2-ene linker--synthesis and evaluation of their reactivation activity against tabun and paraoxon-inhibited acetylcholinesterase.

Bioorg Med Chem Lett

June 2007

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Drug Control, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Kralove, Charles University in Prague, Heyrovskeho 1203, 500 05 Hradec Kralove, Czech Republic.

Six novel AChE reactivators with a (Z)-but-2-ene linker were synthesized using the known synthetic pathways. Their ability to reactivate AChE, which had been previously inhibited by nerve agent tabun or pesticide paraoxon, was tested in vitro and compared to pralidoxime, HI-6, obidoxime, and K075. The novel synthesized compounds were found to be ineffective against GA-inhibited AChE but the ability of (Z)-1,4-bis(4-hydroxyiminomethylpyridinium)-but-2-ene dibromide to reactivate paraoxon-inhibited AChE was comparable with that of oxime K075.
