Tetramethylammonium (TMA) is a ubiquitous cationic motif in biochemistry, found in the charged choline headgroup of membrane phospholipids and in tri-methylated lysine residues, which modulates histone-DNA interactions and impacts epigenetic mechanisms. TMA interactions with anionic species, particularly carboxylate groups of amino acid residues and extracellular sugars, are of substantial biological relevance, as these interactions mediate a wide range of cellular processes. This study investigates the molecular interactions between TMA and acetate, representing carboxylate-containing groups, using neutron scattering experiments complemented by force fields and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

High-precision molecular manipulation techniques are used to control the distance between radical molecules on superconductors. Our results show that the molecules can host single electrons with a spin 1/2. By changing the distance between tip and sample, a quantum phase transition from the singlet to doublet ground state can be induced.

Transfer RNAs (tRNAs) serve as a dictionary for the ribosome translating the genetic message from mRNA into a polypeptide chain. In addition to this canonical role, tRNAs are involved in other processes such as programmed stop codon readthrough (SC-RT). There, tRNAs with near-cognate anticodons to stop codons must outcompete release factors and incorporate into the ribosomal decoding center to prevent termination and allow translation to continue.

Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology, University of Ljubljana, Ljubljana, Slovenia; Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Brno University of Technology, Brno, Czech Republic. Electronic address:

Tire wear microplastics (TWMs) are continuously generated during driving and are subsequently released into the environment, where they pose potential risks to aquatic organisms. In this study, the effects of untreated, hydrated, and environmentally aged TWMs on the growth, root development, photosynthesis, electron transport system (ETS) activity, and energy-rich molecules of duckweed Lemna minor were investigated. The results indicated that untreated and aged TWMs have the most pronounced negative effects on Lemna minor, as evidenced by reduced growth and impaired root development.

Model P-chirogenic phosphonates derived from isopinocampheol, offering an excellent experimental system for studying chirality on the phosphorus chiral center, were studied using a set of chiroptical methods including ECD, VCD and ROA. Thanks to their rigidity, limiting the number of possible conformers, we successfully correlated the experimental UV-vis/ECD, IR/VCD and Raman/ROA results with DFT calculations. This allowed us to confidently assign the absolute configuration of our models, and our assignment is consistent with X-ray diffraction (XRD) data.

School of Physics, State Key Laboratory of Electronic Thin Films and Integrated Devices, University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Chengdu 611731, China.

Ultrashort laser pulses are extensively used for efficient manipulation of interfacial spin injection in two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures. However, physical processes accompanying the photoinduced spin transfer dynamics on the all-semiconductor ferromagnetic vdW heterostructure remain largely unexplored. Here, we present a computational investigation of the femtosecond laser pulse induced purely electron-mediated spin transfer dynamics at a time scale of less than 50 fs in a vdW heterostructure.

Soil spectroscopy is a widely used method for estimating soil properties that are important to environmental and agricultural monitoring. However, a bottleneck to its more widespread adoption is the need for establishing large reference datasets for training machine learning (ML) models, which are called soil spectral libraries (SSLs). Similarly, the prediction capacity of new samples is also subject to the number and diversity of soil types and conditions represented in the SSLs.

Metabolic Dysfunction Associated-Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD) and Cardiovascular Risk: Embrace All Facets of the Disease.

Curr Cardiol Rep

January 2025

Third Department of Medicine, General University Hospital and First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, 121 08, Prague, Czech Republic.

Purpose Of Review: In recent years, the terms "metabolic associated fatty liver disease-MAFLD" and "metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease-MASLD" were introduced to improve the encapsulation of metabolic dysregulation in this patient population, as well as to avoid the negative/stigmatizing terms "non-alcoholic" and "fatty".

Recent Findings: There is evidence suggesting links between MASLD and coronary heart disease (CHD), heart failure (HF), atrial fibrillation (AF), stroke, peripheral artery disease (PAD) and chronic kidney disease (CKD), although the data for HF, AF, stroke and PAD are scarcer. Physicians should consider the associations between MASLD and CV diseases in their daily practice.

RNA recognition motifs (RRMs) are a key class of proteins that primarily bind single-stranded RNAs. In this study, we applied standard atomistic molecular dynamics simulations to obtain insights into the intricate binding dynamics between uridine-rich RNAs and TbRGG2 RRM using the recently developed OL3-Stafix AMBER force field, which improves the description of single-stranded RNA molecules. Complementing structural experiments that unveil a primary binding mode with a single uridine bound, our simulations uncover two supplementary binding modes in which adjacent nucleotides encroach upon the binding pocket.

January 2025

Dept. of Mathematics and Physics, Military Technology Faculty, University of Defence, Kounicova 65, CZ-662 10, Brno, Czech Republic.

The steady-state creep rate increases with working temperature according to the Arrhenius law and with applied stress according to the power law. The dependence on both the variables is usually expressed as the product of the Arrhenius law and the power law, where a constant value of the apparent activation energy is assumed. As the exponent of the power law, called the stress sensitivity parameter and dependent on the deformation micromechanism, a specific integer is taken.

Aim: Exposure to light at night and meal time misaligned with the light/dark (LD) cycle-typical features of daily life in modern 24/7 society-are associated with negative effects on health. To understand the mechanism, we developed a novel protocol of complex chronodisruption (CD) in which we exposed female rats to four weekly cycles consisting of 5-day intervals of constant light and 2-day intervals of food access restricted to the light phase of the 12:12 LD cycle.

Methods: We examined the effects of CD on behavior, estrous cycle, sleep patterns, glucose homeostasis and profiles of clock- and metabolism-related gene expression (using RT qPCR) and liver metabolome and lipidome (using untargeted metabolomic and lipidomic profiling).
