Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzed 1,844 Chinese systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients from 2008-2020, revealing a significant gender imbalance with a male to female ratio of about 1:5.4 and differences in clinical characteristics between genders.
  • - Male patients had earlier onset age (48.6 years vs. 45.5 years), shorter disease duration, and higher prevalence of diffuse cutaneous SSc (63% vs. 44.2%), while female patients experienced more common symptoms like Raynaud's phenomenon and higher positivity rates for certain antibodies.
  • - Despite males having more severe skin involvement and higher global assessment scores, there were no significant differences in interstitial lung disease between genders, highlighting the complex

Cigarette and electronic cigarette use are significant public health concerns across the United States. Tobacco use remains the single most preventable cause of morbidity and mortality in the world. Electronic cigarettes initially emerged as a better alternative to conventional cigarettes and for promoting smoking cessation; however, current evidence reveals similar deleterious health implications caused by both products on almost all organ systems, including the skin.

Objective: In SLE, smoking increases the burden of cutaneous disease and organ damage, and leads to premature mortality. However, the effect of smoking on disease manifestations and cytokine levels of patients with SLE is unclear. This study compared characteristics of patients with SLE across smoking status, and determined the association of smoking with serum cytokine levels.

Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of golimumab (GLM) in improving joint, periarticular structures and cutaneous manifestations in patients with moderate to severe psoriatic arthritis (PsA) with cutaneous psoriasis in different real-life clinical settings and 48-month drug survival.

Methods: Clinical and laboratory records were collected from PsA patients treated with GLM at baseline (T0) and after 6, 12, 24, 36, and 48 months of treatment. Comparisons were performed using a paired t-test or Wilcoxon test.

BACKGROUND Lung cancer is the second most common cancer, with the highest mortality rate. It frequently metastasizes to the nervous system, bone, adrenal gland, and liver. Rarely, it metastasizes to soft tissues, including cutaneous, subcutaneous, and skeletal muscles, with an overall prevalence rate of 2.

Objective: To examine the impact of cumulative smoking in pack-years on systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) cutaneous manifestations and damage.

Methods: Our cohort study included 632 adult SLE patients at an academic center, meeting 1997 ACR or 2012 SLICC classification criteria. Outcomes were: (1) cutaneous SLICC Damage Index (SDI), (2) ACR and SLICC criteria.

Introduction: Dermatological manifestations of actinomycosis are classical, most often related to Actinomyces israelii. In most of the cases, they occur near to the primary focus, and in the cervicofacial area. Systemic dissemination with cutaneous distant metastasis is rare, most often related to A.

Neurofibromatosis-1 or von Recklinghausen's disease is an autosomal dominant disorder. Cafe au lait macules are generally the initial presenting feature of the disease, and there can be varying degrees of involvement of the skeletal, neurological, and pulmonary organ systems as the disease progresses. The existence of neurofibromatosis-associated diffuse lung disease (NF-DLD) as a separate entity has always been questioned and, is often attributed to cigarette smoking, rather than a manifestation of NF-1.

Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate racial/ethnic differences in disease manifestations and survival in a US cohort of patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc), with a focus on Asian patients.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted among Kaiser Permanente Northern California adults with an incident SSc diagnosis by a rheumatologist from 2007 to 2016, confirmed by a chart review to fulfill 2013 American College of Rheumatology (ACR)/European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) classification criteria. Self-reported race/ethnicity was categorized as non-Hispanic white, Asian, Hispanic, and black.

Background: The prevalence of heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is 1 of 250 in the general population and approximately 1 of 125 in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), yet only a minority are diagnosed. The diagnostic criteria for FH rely on a point system using low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), family history, cutaneous manifestations, and molecular diagnosis. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of FH in the elating vidence to chieve holesterol argets (REACT) registry.

SMARCA4-deficient thoracic sarcoma (SMARCA4-DTS) is a recently recognized entity with undifferentiated rhabdoid morphology and mutations in the switch/sucrose nonfermenting BRG1-associated factors complex. Patients are typically males in their fifth decade with a history of smoking who present with rapidly progressive intrathoracic disease and follow an aggressive clinical course. Metastatic disease is reported in up to 77% of cases; however, to our knowledge, cutaneous metastasis has not been reported nor has it been reported as the initial manifestation of the disease.

Cutaneous radiation damage, commonly referred to as radiation dermatitis, is a finding of considerable concern. The exposure is often from radiation therapy, a double-edged sword, removing malignant cancer cells and improving the lives of countless patients, yet being locally destructive and potentially premalignant. Among its negative consequences and complications, radiation dermatitis, a potentially severe skin reaction that occurs after the receipt of radiation therapy, presents a clinical challenge today.

Background/aims: Extraintestinal cutaneous manifestations of IBD represent a severe disease complication and an early and accurate treatment might positively influence the disease course. Using the patient collective of the Swiss IBD Cohort Study (SIBDCS), we analysed epidemiological as well as clinical factors being associated with the onset of pyoderma gangrenosum, erythema nodosum and aphthous ulcers in IBD patients.

Methods: We included 3266 SIBDCs patients, 1840 with Crohn's disease (CD) and 1426 with ulcerative colitis (UC) or IBD unclassified (IBDU) and analysed the association of cutaneous manifestations with age, age at diagnosis time, type of disease, gender, family history, HLA-allotype, smoking, intestinal disease activity, therapy and other extraintestinal manifestations (EIM).

Porphyria Cutanea Tarda (PCT) is a cutaneous porphyria that results from the hepatic inhibition of the heme biosynthetic enzyme uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase (UROD), and can occur either in the absence or presence of an inherited heterozygous UROD mutation (PCT subtypes 1 and 2, respectively). A heterozygous UROD mutation causes half-normal levels of UROD activity systemically, which is a susceptibility factor but is not sufficient alone to cause type 2 PCT. In both Types 1 and 2 PCT, the cutaneous manifestations are precipitated by additional factors that lead to generation of an inhibitor that more profoundly reduces hepatic UROD activity.
