Effects of a multimodal exercise program for people with ankylosing spondylitis.

Background And Purpose: Few randomized controlled studies have examined the effects of exercise in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS). This study investigated the effects of a 12-week, multimodal exercise program in patients with AS.

Subjects: A convenience sample of 30 patients with AS (18 male, 12 female), with a mean age of 34.

The oral health status of street children in Adana, Turkey.

Aim: To determine the oral health status of street children and compare the results with a group of non-working children in Adana, Turkey. Street children are generally defined as any boy or girl for whom the street has become his or her habitual abode and/or source of livelihood; and who is inadequately protected, supervised, or directed by responsible adults.

Study Design: Demographic data including education, employment and social insurance of parents and number of siblings, was obtained.

Rigid bronchoscopy for the suspicion of foreign body in the airway.

Objective: Airway foreign bodies present a diagnostic dilemma and has been recognized for many years. Since aspiration of foreign bodies can be a serious and sometimes fatal problem, early intervention and proper management is vital.

Method: In this retrospective study, the results of 1887 bronchoscopies, which were performed between the years 1973 and 2004 for the suspicion of foreign body aspiration in children, were presented.

Associated anomalies in children with congenital solitary functioning kidney.

Congenital solitary functioning kidney (CSFK) is a relatively common renal malformation and in children is frequently complicated by anomalies of the ipsilateral genital organs and occasionally by anomalies of other organs. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of associated urological, cardiac, gastrointestinal, hematological, neurological, skeletal, and other congenital malformations in children with CSFK. We retrospectively reviewed 87 consecutive cases of CSFK diagnosed at our hospital between 1995 and 2003.

[Mediastinal hemangioma (case report)].

We present radiographic and computed tomographic findings of a mediastinal hemangioma, a very rare benign vascular tumor that comprises less than 0.5% of all mediastinal masses. Posteroanterior chest film showed a homogeneous opacity in the left upper zone that was contiguous with the mediastinum.

[Unenhanced spiral CT in the diagnosis of acute appendicitis].

Purpose: To evaluate the role of unenhanced spiral computed tomography (CT) in the work-up of patients with suspicious symptoms of acute appendicitis.

Materials And Methods: Sixty-five patients with suspected acute appendicitis (34 (52%) women and 31 (48%) men), were studied with spiral CT without administration of IV or oral contrast. From the upper L1 vertebral plate to the superior border of the iliac wings, slices of 10 mm collimation with 8 mm/sec table speed were taken, and from that level to the acetabular roof level, 5 mm thick slices were obtained with a table speed of 5 mm/sec and tube rotation time of 1.

A study of 60- to 89-mo.-old children's skill at writing numerals.

The skill of writing numerals necessitates a certain developmental maturity. Studying the age at which children start to develop this skill and assessing problems they encounter while writing numerals should give direction to their training. [Case report: Mirizzi syndrome in a patient with emphysematous cholecystitis: ultrasonographic and computed tomographic findings].

Mirizzi syndrome is a very uncommon cause of extrahepatic bile duct obstruction. A stone impacts in the cystic duct or gallbladder neck and causes extrinsic compression and obstruction of the common hepatic duct, aided by a local inflammatory process. Preoperative diagnosis is very important because of the potential risk of bile duct injury during surgery and the local inflammatory process may suggest cholangiocarcinoma.

[Case report: Pedunculated leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava].

Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava is a rare mesenchymal tumor which originates from the smooth muscle cells of the vascular wall. Its radiographic presentation varies from that of intraluminal lesions resulting in obstruction of the inferior vena cava to those of giant retroperitoneal masses extending to the surrounding perivascular tissues although still with minimal intraluminal protrusion. In this report, we present one such case in which a 31-year-old woman had complaints of severe abdominal pain, abdominal distension and vomiting.

[The levels of serum interleukins in the children with trauma].

Background: We investigated the levels of IL-I, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-I0 and IL-12 in serum of the children with trauma and its relation with the severity of trauma.

Methods: We included 45 children with moderate or severe multiple trauma and 21 healthy children for control group to our study. The serum IL-I, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-IO and IL-12 were measured by micro ELISA.

The basis of lengthening bones at their anatomic locations has been defined in detail by many authors. The possibility of distraction osteogenesis in vascularized bone grafts and the role of periosteum was investigated in 35 growing New Zealand White rabbits in four experimental groups: group 1, the scintigraphic assessment group (N = 4); group 2, the distraction group with intact periosteum (N = 15); group 3, the control group without periosteum in the distraction area (N = 6); and group 4, the control group in which the flaps were wrapped in silicone leaves (N = 10). Scintigraphy was used to evaluate the survival of the bone graft.

Adenoids and otitis media with effusion: a morphological study.

Purpose: Adenoidectomy, especially for the treatment of suppurative otitis media, has been used for a very long time. In this study, the role of adenoids in the origin of otitis media with effusion was investigated by using light microscopy, immunocytochemistry, enzyme chemistry, and electron microscopy.

Materials And Methods: A group of 28 children with otitis media with effusion (OME) was identified.

99Tcm-N,N-ethylenedicysteine scintigraphy in children with various renal disorders: a comparative study with 99Tcm-MAG3.

We evaluated the clinical usefulness of 99Tcm-N,N-ethylenedicysteine (99Tcm-EC), a new renal tubular agent, in normal children and in children with various renal disorders and compared it with 99Tcm-mercaptoacetyltriglycine (99Tcm-MAG3). In a first group of children (Group 1), which included 15 patients and 4 normal children, both 99Tcm-EC and 99Tcm-MAG3 renal scintigraphy were performed within a period of 1-5 days. In a second group (Group 2), consisting of 12 patients, only 99Tcm-EC scintigraphy was performed.
