Predictive biomarkers of rapidly developing insulin deficiency in children with type 1 diabetes.

BMJ Open Diabetes Res Care

February 2024

Science for Life Laboratory, Department of Medical Sciences, Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.

Introduction: The rate of progression to complete insulin deficiency varies greatly in type 1 diabetes. This constitutes a challenge, especially when randomizing patients in intervention trials aiming to preserve beta cell function. This study aimed to identify biomarkers predictive of either a rapid or slow disease progression in children with new-onset type 1 diabetes.

The type 1 diabetes community is coalescing around the benefits and advantages of early screening for disease risk. To be accepted by healthcare providers, regulatory authorities and payers, screening programmes need to show that the testing variables allow accurate risk prediction and that individualised risk-informed monitoring plans are established, as well as operational feasibility, cost-effectiveness and acceptance at population level. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to contribute to solving these issues, starting with the identification and stratification of at-risk individuals.

Br J Dermatol

June 2024

Crown Princess Victoria Children's Hospital and Division of Pediatrics, Department of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, Linköping University, Linköping, Sweden.

Article Synopsis
  • Psoriasis is a genetic skin disease influenced by environmental factors, with early nutrition potentially being a risk factor.
  • Data from a study involving 16,415 children in Southeast Sweden revealed that breastfeeding for less than 4 months and early formula introduction increased the risk of developing psoriasis.
  • The study highlights the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for at least 4 months and notes that higher fish consumption, particularly from the Baltic Sea, and high milk intake may also elevate psoriasis risk.
