Background Surgical systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunts have been the standard approach to establish stable pulmonary blood flow in neonates with congenital heart disease with ductal-dependent pulmonary blood flow. More recently, transcatheter ductal stents have been performed as an alternative, less invasive intervention. We aimed to characterize trends in the utilization of surgical shunts versus ductal stents and compare associated outcomes.

Substance-use disorders (SUDs) and drug addiction are not only national, but also global health concerns that have worsened during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Acupuncture augments the endogenous opioid system and, therefore, has a theoretical basis as a treatment for opioid use disorders (OUDs). The basic science of acupuncture, its clinical research in addiction medicine, and decades of success of the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association protocol offer positive findings supporting this protocol's utility for treating SUDs.

Introduction: This study investigated a theoretically derived peer conversation style, problem anxiety talk, to examine the emotional regulation of anxiety in dyads as a possible mechanism of anxiety contagion that occurs between adolescent friends.
Methods: In Study 1, 376 late adolescents residing in the United States, ages 17-24 with 68% female, responded to measures of anxiety, worry, friendship quality, depression, co-rumination, and a new measure of problem anxiety talk. In Study 2 problem anxiety talk, stress, anxiety and depression were evaluated in 481 late adolescents, ages 17-24 with 64% female.

Background The type and location of hospitals where patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) undergo noncardiac procedures have not been investigated. This study aimed to describe (1) the characteristics of these patients, (2) the distribution of procedures among hospitals with and without a cardiac surgical program and travel distances, (3) the characteristics determining the distribution, and (4) mortality rates. Methods and Results This is a retrospective cohort analysis of inpatient data from the Center for Healthcare Information and Analysis of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Texas Healthcare Information Collection, and Health Care Cost and Utilization Project State Inpatient Database.

The COVID-19 pandemic has strained surgical systems worldwide and placed healthcare providers at risk in their workplace. To protect surgical care providers caring for patients with COVID-19, in May 2020 we developed a COVID-19 Surgical Patient Checklist (C19 SPC), including online training materials, to accompany the World Health Organization Surgical Safety Checklist. In October 2020, an online survey was conducted via partner and social media networks to understand perioperative clinicians' intraoperative practice and perceptions of safety while caring for COVID-19 positive patients and gain feedback on the utility of C19 SPC.

Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP) is an ultra-rare, inherited, connective tissue disease with ∼800 documented cases worldwide. The principal pathological feature of FOP is the transition of skeletal muscle, tendons, ligaments, and fascia into cartilage and bone. This heterotopic ossification (HO) is often preceded by painful soft tissue swellings or flare-ups that may last several months.

Quality improvement programs focused on improving care in intensive care units have become standard at pediatric hospitals around the world over the past several decades. However, the methodology or framework by which these programs assess quality is not standard. This review describes the varying quality improvement frameworks that have been promoted by prominent pediatric and critical care societies and the strengths and limitations of these frameworks, as well as several notable international collaboratives in this domain.

Purpose Of Review: Perioperative bleeding and blood product transfusion are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Prevention and optimal management of bleeding decreases risk and lowers costs. Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic agent that reduces bleeding and transfusion in a broad number of adult and pediatric surgeries, as well as in trauma and obstetrics.

Objectives: Damage to the posterior cerebellum can cause affective deficits in patients. In adults, cerebellar infarcts result in thermal hyperalgesia and affect descending modulation of pain. This study evaluated the effect of resection of low-grade cerebellar tumors on pain processing in human children.
