Objectives: In children admitted after an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), this study 1) determines the proportion that undergo: physical abuse and toxin exposure evaluation, child protection team (CPT) consultation, and child protective services (CPS) referral, and 2) evaluates the association between demographic, social, clinical characteristics with CPT consultation and CPS referral.
Methods: Retrospective chart review was conducted of children < 4 years old admitted following an OHCA between November 2012 and February 2023. Associations between demographics, caregiver social risk factors, and clinical characteristics with CPT consultation and CPS referral were examined using logistic regression.

Diabetic wounds often exhibit a chronic non-healing state due to the combined effects of multiple factors, including hyperglycemia, impaired angiogenesis, immune dysfunction, bacterial infection, and excessive oxidative stress. Despite the availability of various therapeutic strategies, effectively managing the complex and prolonged healing process of diabetic infected wounds remains challenging. In this study, we combined the natural antidiabetic drug lipoic acid (LA) with the RADA16-YIGSR (RY) peptide obtained through solid-phase synthesis, utilizing reversible hydrogen bonds and coordination bonds for binding.

This study aims to elucidate the target and mechanism of baicalin, a clinically utilized drug, in the treatment of neuroinflammatory diseases. Neuroinflammation, characterized by the activation of glial cells and the release of various pro-inflammatory cytokines, plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including spinal cord injury (SCI). The remission of such diseases is significantly dependent on the improvement of inflammatory microenvironment.

Multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii has emerged as one of the most antibiotic-resistant bacterial pathogens associated with nosocomial infection, with its resistance highly depending on multiple multidrug efflux pumps. Here, we report the cryoelectron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of Acinetobacter drug efflux G (AdeG), the inner membrane component of one of three important resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND) pump family members in A. baumannii, which is involved in drug resistance to chloramphenicol, trimethoprim, ciprofloxacin, and clindamycin.

The development of mRNA vaccines represents a significant advancement in cancer treatment, with more than 120 clinical trials to date demonstrating their potential across various malignancies, including lung, breast, prostate, melanoma, and more challenging cancers such as pancreatic and brain tumors. These vaccines work by encoding tumor-specific antigens and immune-stimulating molecules, effectively activating the immune system to target and eliminate cancer cells. Despite these promising advancements, significant challenges remain, particularly in achieving efficient delivery and precise regulation of the immune response.

Tumor immunotherapy, particularly immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), has emerged as a powerful strategy in treating malignant tumors, exhibiting efficacy in both first-line and second-line treatments for advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Despite their success, ICIs can lead to adverse reactions, including interstitial lung disease (ILD), with an incidence ranging from 2.7 % to 20.

A necessary component of postoperative care in gender-affirming vaginoplasty is the dilation of the neovaginal canal. Difficulty with dilation can cause patient pain and distress, often decreasing compliance and leading to partial or complete closure of the neovaginal canal. This study sought to evaluate the sociodemographic, operative, and comorbid characteristics that contribute to patient difficulty with neovaginal dilation.

Introduction: Prasinezumab was shown to potentially delay motor progression in individuals with early-stage Parkinson's disease (PD) who were either treatment-naïve or on monoamine oxidase type B inhibitor (MAO-Bi) therapy in the PASADENA study. We report the rationale, design, and baseline patient characteristics of the PADOVA study, designed to evaluate prasinezumab in an early-stage PD population receiving standard-of-care (SOC) symptomatic medications.
Methods: PADOVA (NCT04777331) is a Phase 2b, multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study, in which individuals with early-stage PD on SOC stable symptomatic monotherapy (levodopa or MAO-Bi) receive intravenous prasinezumab 1500 mg every 4 weeks.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is globally ranked as the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in both men and women. There is an urgent need for novel biomarkers to facilitate early diagnosis and enhance patient care, thereby improving treatment response and reducing mortality rates. Signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) is essential for controlling the anti-tumor immune response since it is a hub for several oncogenic signaling pathways.

Background: Although there have been reports that green tea intake has thromboprophylactic effect, it was still unknown whether it had adjuvant effect on the basis of conventional anticoagulation for patients diagnosed with venous thromboembolism (VTE).
Methods: VTE patients were retrospectively classified into green tea group and no green tea group in a 1:1 ratio using propensity score matching, based on whether they drank green tea during the 3 months' period after VTE diagnosis. Primary outcomes were VTE recurrence at 3 months after VTE diagnosis and VTE-related death during 3 months after VTE diagnosis.

Acute lung injury (ALI) is a severe inflammatory condition of the respiratory system, associated with high morbidity and mortality. This study investigates the therapeutic potential of tocilizumab (TZ), an IL-6 receptor inhibitor, in mitigating lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced ALI by modulating the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway. An ALI model was established using LPS induction.

Purpose: Since fibroblast activation protein (FAP), one predominant biomarker of cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs), is highly expressed in the tumor stroma of various epidermal-derived cancers, targeting FAP for tumor diagnosis and treatment has shown substantial potentials in both preclinical and clinical studies. However, in preclinical settings, tumor-bearing mice exhibit relatively low absolute FAP expression levels, leading to challenges in acquiring high-quality PET images using radiolabeled FAP ligands (FAPIs) with low molar activity, because of which a saturation effect in imaging is prone to happen. Moreover, how exactly the molar dose of FAPI administered to a mouse influences the targeted PET imaging and radiotherapy remains unclear now.

Background: The use of local consolidative therapy (LCT) in patients with oligometastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is rapidly evolving, with a preponderance of data supporting the benefits of such therapeutic approaches incorporating pulmonary resection for appropriately selected candidates. However, practices vary widely institutionally and regionally, and evidence-based guidelines are lacking.
Methods: The Society of Thoracic Surgeons assembled a panel of thoracic surgical oncologists to evaluate and synthesize the available evidence regarding the role of pulmonary resection as LCT.
