Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) appear as good candidates to substitute conventional petroleum-based plastics since they have similar properties but with the advantage of being biodegradable. Wastewater streams with high organic content are feasible substrates for PHA production resulting in an opportunity for waste recovery. Fabric phase sorptive extraction for the determination of 17 multiclass fungicides in environmental water by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

A rapid environmental pollution screening and monitoring workflow based on fabric phase sorptive extraction-gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (FPSE-GC-MS/MS) is proposed for the first time for the analysis of 17 widespread used fungicides (metalaxyl, cyprodinil, tolylfluanid, procymidone, folpet, fludioxonil, myclobutanil, kresoxim methyl, iprovalicarb, benalaxyl, trifloxystrobin, fenhexamid, tebuconazole, iprodione, pyraclostrobin, azoxystrobin and dimethomorph) in environmental waters. The most critical parameters affecting FPSE, such as sample volume, matrix pH, desorption solvent and time, and ionic strength were optimized by statistical design of experiment to obtain the highest extraction efficiency. Under the optimized conditions, the proposed FPSE-GC-MS/MS method was validated in terms of linearity, repeatability, reproducibility, accuracy and precision.

Global food demand is increasing due to population growth and dietary transitions, resulting from rising incomes, are associated with increased prevalence of non-communicable diseases. Improving the sustainability of the food sector is also critical for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Performance of a membrane-coupled high-rate algal pond for urban wastewater treatment at demonstration scale.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of an outdoor membrane-coupled high-rate algal pond equipped with industrial-scale membranes for treating urban wastewater. Decoupling biomass retention time (BRT) and hydraulic retention time (HRT) by membrane filtration resulted in improved process efficiencies, with higher biomass productivities and nutrient removal rates when operating at low HRTs. At 6 days of BRT, biomass productivity increased from 30 to 66 and to 95 g·m·d when operating at HRTs of 6, 4 and 2.
