Background: Critical care of patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) with acute brain injury (ABI) is notable for a lack of high-quality clinical evidence. Here, we offer guidelines for neurological care (neurological monitoring and management) of adults during and after ECMO support.
Methods: These guidelines are based on clinical practice consensus recommendations and scientific statements.

Objective: Studies regarding effects of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), on risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) have reported discordant results. The aim of this review is to clarify effects of marine omega-3 intake on risk of AF.
Patients And Methods: A PubMed search was performed using terms: atrial fibrillation, omega-3, EPA, DHA, vagal tone.

Background: Lateralization has been previously studied for reverse shoulder arthroplasty, but there is little clinical research investigating the independent effect of medialization or lateralization of the joint line, nor global medialization or lateralization for anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). The goal of this study was to assess the impact of lateralization on clinical outcomes after anatomic TSA.
Methods: A retrospective review of a multi-institutional registry was performed.

Statement Of Problem: Patient satisfaction and esthetic acceptance are important factors in predicting the success of implant therapy in the anterior maxilla. A standardized esthetic index to evaluate implant esthetic outcomes is still lacking.
Purpose: The purposes of this study were to describe the newly developed images that correlate to the pink esthetic score and white esthetic score (PES/WES) for improved standardized documentation and to evaluate the validity and reliability of the proposed anterior implant esthetic index (AIEI) with patient satisfaction scores.

Inhalation of prions into the nasal cavity is an efficient route of infection. Following inhalation of infectious prions, animals develop disease with a similar incubation period compared with per os exposure, but with greater efficiency. To identify the reason for this increased efficiency, we identified neural structures that uniquely innervate the nasal cavity and neural structures known to mediate neuroinvasion following oral infection and used immunohistochemistry to determine the temporal and spatial accumulation of prions from hamster tissue sections containing cell bodies and axons at 2-week intervals following prion exposure.

Objective: A challenge in health professions is training practitioners to navigate health care complexities, promote health, optimize outcomes, and advance their field. Physical therapist residency education offers a pathway to meet these needs in ways that "entry-level" (professional) education may not. Identifying key aspects of excellence in residency education and understanding its value in developing adaptive expertise will help devise strategies to enhance program, resident, and patient outcomes.

This Perspective provides a crucial set of actions with corresponding recommendations aimed at propelling the physical therapy profession toward excellence in residency education. The conceptual model includes elements of excellence in the delivery and outcomes of physical therapist residency education and the domain of value experienced by stakeholders impacted by physical therapist residency education. Linked to the conceptual model, the 15 actions, and 28 recommendations draw from (1) the Physical Therapist Residency Excellence and Value (PT-REV) study, (2) the Physical Therapist Education for the 21st Century (PTE-21) study, and (3) research in the learning sciences.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, locally aggressive, highly vascularized benign tumor classically found in males from 13 to 20 years old. The most common clinical presentations are recurrent epistaxis and nasal congestion. Imaging plays a significant role in differentiating and determining the extension of nasopharyngeal lesions.

Adolescence is a period of profound biopsychosocial development, with pubertally-driven neural reorganization as social demands increase in peer contexts. The explosive increase in social media access has fundamentally changed peer interactions among youth, creating an urgent need to understand its impact on neurobiological development and mental health. Extant literature indicates that using social media promotes social comparison and feedback seeking (SCFS) behaviors in youth, which portend increased risk for mental health disorders, but little is known about its impact on neurobiological development.

Surgical intervention utilizing various approaches is a cornerstone in the management of breast cancer. The surgical approaches include lumpectomy, mastectomy, axillary lymph node dissection, and primary or delayed reconstruction. Post-mastectomy radiotherapy is frequently recommended in cases of advanced tumors and extensive lymph node involvement.

Despite being challenging, elucidating the systematic control mechanisms of multifactorial drug responses is crucial for pharmacogenomic research. We describe a new form of statistical mechanics to reconstruct informative, dynamic, omnidirectional, and personalized networks (idopNetworks), which cover all pharmacogenomic factors and their interconnections, interdependence, and mechanistic roles. IdopNetworks can characterize how cell-cell crosstalk is mediated by genes and proteins to shape body-drug interactions and identify key roadmaps of information flow and propagation for determining drug efficacy and toxicity.

Bradykinin is an endogenously produced nonapeptide with many physiological and pathological functions that are mediated by two pharmacologically defined receptor subtypes, B1- and B2-receptors. Current studies sought to characterize the functional bradykinin (BK) receptors present in freshly isolated bovine ciliary muscle (BCM) using an organ-bath tissue contraction system. Cumulative longitudinal isometric tension responses of BCM strips (4-5 mm) were recorded before and after the addition of test compounds to BCM strips hooked up to an isometric strain gauge transducer system.

It is challenging to deliver therapeutics in the oral environment due to the wet surfaces, the nature of the mucosa and the potential for saliva washout. In this study, the development of a mucoadhesive dimethicone-based oral carrier system for adhesion to the hard tissue and mucosa in the mouth was examined. This study reports the viscosity and mucoadhesion of dimethicone based polymer blends.

ECMO is becoming widely used as a life-saving measure for critically ill patients. However, there is limited data on pharmacokinetics and the dosing of beta-lactam antibiotics in ECMO. In this study, we evaluated the serum concentrations of cefepime in patients on ECMO to determine the impact of ECMO circuitry and to guide therapeutic dosing.

Unlabelled: Vitamin D status has long been related to falls risk. In this planned secondary analysis of a vitamin supplementation trial in postmenopausal women, standardized 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration up to 60 ng/mL was not associated with increased falls. Women with 25(OH)D ≥ 60 ng/mL had higher odds of ≥ 2 falls.

The K antigen is a major cause of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). K-HDFN is unique in that it can result in destruction of not just mature erythrocytes but fetal erythrocyte progenitors, causing severe fetal anemia earlier in pregnancy than other antigens. This poses a danger to fetal health as intrauterine transfusion (IUT), the preferred method of managing HDFN, becomes riskier earlier in pregnancy.

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare diagnosis associated with high mortality in different clinical settings. PML has been attributed to the reactivation of the John Cunningham (JC) virus (JCV). JCV typically affects patients with HIV/AIDS, solid organ and hematological malignancies, and those under treatment with immunomodulatory drugs (IMiDs) like pomalidomide.
