Unlabelled: A 78-year-old gentleman presented to the emergency department (ED) for palpitations and dizziness. He had a complicated medical history including atrial fibrillation (AF), recently status post a Watchman procedure, oxygen-dependent chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) revealed the presence of an intracardiac right atrial thrombus.

Background: Anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty (aTSA) is a well described technique for addressing glenohumeral osteoarthritis. Little has been written on outcomes for newer stemless humeral implants in older patients, with none looking specifically at an implant relying on screw fixation. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the clinical and radiographic outcomes for patients over 70 years of age undergoing aTSA with the Eclipse (Arthrex Inc.

The objectives of this study are to provide a systematic review of a novel alloplastic hard-tissue grafting material, carbonate apatite granules (CO3Ap-granules), to provide a clinical case presentation of CO3Ap-granules in periodontal surgery. The following three electronic databases were searched independently by two of the authors (MN) and (CR): National Library of Medicine [MEDLINE (PubMed) and ClinicalTrials.gov], EMBASE (OVID) and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL).

This Letter presents the first measurement of event-by-event fluctuations of the net number (difference between the particle and antiparticle multiplicities) of multistrange hadrons Ξ^{-} and Ξ[over ¯]^{+} and its correlation with the net-kaon number using the data collected by the ALICE Collaboration in pp, p-Pb, and Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02 TeV. The statistical hadronization model with a correlation over three units of rapidity between hadrons having the same and opposite strangeness content successfully describes the results.

Background: Substance use disorders (SUD) are a significant public health challenge, necessitating that clinicians are trained in SUD treatment and harm reduction (HR) strategies. Despite this, no studies have assessed the extent of SUD and HR training across all medical schools. This study assesses the current state of SUD and HR curriculum among medical students in the United States and Canada.

The spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) is a surveillance mechanism that prevents uneven segregation of sister chromatids between daughter cells during anaphase. This essential regulatory checkpoint prevents aneuploidy which can lead to various congenital defects observed in newborns. Many studies have been carried out to elucidate the role of proteins involved in the SAC as well as the function of the checkpoint during gametogenesis and embryogenesis.

Background: Alemtuzumab-containing conditioning regimens are used for allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) to reduce acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) and the risk of graft rejection. Alemtuzumab is typically administered intravenously but is often accompanied by infusion-related side effects, including injection site reactions and anaphylaxis. Little is known about the routes of administration and if they differ in safety and efficacy in pediatric patients, especially when used in transplant conditioning.

Background: The American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Organ Injury Scale (OIS) Committee published the original pancreatic OIS in 1990 with the authors acknowledging at the time that the classification would need to undergo "continued refinement as clinical experience dictates." The current OIS overemphasizes injury location over ductal integrity; modifications are needed to improve concordance between OIS, therapy, and outcomes and promote accuracy in quality assessment and research.
Methods: A subcommittee of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma and invited experts in radiology and interventional gastroenterology were chosen.
Background: Internal rotation after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty is often unchanged or minimally improved. The primary purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of glenoid baseplate version on postoperative internal rotation. The secondary purpose to investigate the effects of baseplate retroversion on external rotation (ER) and patient-reported outcomes (PROs).

Background: Partial-thickness rotator cuff tears (PTRCTs), often considered less severe than full-thickness rotator cuff tears (FTRCTs), can be equally symptomatic. Despite the prevalence of PTRCTs, scholarly attention has predominantly focused on FTRCTs, resulting in a relative neglect of PTRCTs. This study aimed to assess the incidence of surgical repairs for PTRCTs in the United States (U.

Background: Heart failure (HF) and sepsis are significant causes of disease burden and mortality among the elderly population of the USA. HF causes fluid overload, which complicates the treatment approach when patients develop sepsis necessitating fluid resuscitation. While individual disease states have been studied extensively, the trends in mortality for concurrent sepsis and HF are not well known.

Ionotropic glutamate receptors (iGluRs) mediate fast excitatory neurotransmission in the nervous system. In addition to NMDA receptor co-agonists, D-serine is a ligand for glutamate delta receptors (GluDs) and interacts with the ligand-binding domain with low affinity. However, D-serine binding does not lead to typical ion channel currents in GluD1 or GluD2 but may contribute to synaptic plasticity.

Achieving cell-specific gene expression is crucial in the design of safe and efficacious gene therapies for the treatment of sensorineural hearing loss. Although a variety of adeno-associated virus (AAV) serotypes have been used to deliver genes to inner ear hair cells, few serotypes currently allow specific targeting of supporting cells. We sought to specifically target supporting cells by combining an AAV serotype with high tropism for the inner ear with enhancer sequences from the supporting cell-specific gene Lunatic Fringe (Lfng).

Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) are more susceptible to microvascular complications. However, whether DM is associated with coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) is unclear. This observational study used data from the Coronary Microvascular Disease Registry (CMDR) (NCT05960474) and included patients with angina and no obstructive coronary artery disease (ANOCA) who underwent invasive CMD evaluation using the CoroVentis CoroFlow System (Abbott Vascular, Santa Clara, CA).

Background: Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) can be an effective treatment for highly selected patients with severe emphysema but only half of carefully selected patients derive clinical benefit. Two commercially available platforms exist to help determine candidacy for BLVR via quantitative analysis of computed tomography (CT) scans.
Objectives: To determine if the two commercially available quantitative platforms identified the same patient population that may benefit from BLVR.

Introduction: Trust and rapport between patients and physicians form the cornerstone of effective medical practice. A key factor influencing this trust is the patient's perception of the physician's appearance. Women physicians often face more rigorous expectations concerning their physical appearance compared to men physicians, creating a need to balance traditional professional attire with maintaining femininity and individuality.
