Objective: The purpose of this preliminary study was to determine if cleft type and/or history of otitis media with effusion (OM) contribute to backing of /t/ and/or /s/ in young children with and without repaired cleft palate.

Method: Participants were 39 children (mean age=36 months, range 34 to 41). Ten children had repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (CLP), nine had repaired cleft palate only (CP), twelve had no clefts but histories of OM, and eight were typically-developing (TD) without clefts or OM history.

Treatment of temporomandibular ankylosis is challenging and frequently leads to re-ankylosis, relapse, dangerous complications and, in turn, the need for multiple operations. In this article, we present a protocol for the treatment of ankylosis of the temporomandibular joints that assumes earlier intervention with the assistance of 3D virtual surgical planning (3DVSP) and custom biomaterials for better and safer surgical outcomes. Botulinum toxin type A (BTA) injections into the subjacent orbicularis oris muscle have been shown to improve appearance and produce narrower cheiloplasty scars. This study was performed to determine the effect of BTA injected at different sites on the unilateral cleft lip scar and cleft side nostril width. A consortium of global cleft professionals, predominantly from low- and middle-income countries, identified adaptations to cleft care protocols during and after COVID-19 as a priority learning area of need. A multidisciplinary international working group met on a videoconferencing platform in a multi-staged process to make consensus recommendations for adaptations to cleft protocols within resource-constrained settings. Feedback was sought from a roundtable discussion forum and global organizations involved in comprehensive cleft care.

Only a handful of cell types, including fibroblasts, epithelial, and endothelial cells, can support human cytomegalovirus (CMV) replication in vitro, in striking contrast to the situation in vivo. While the susceptibility of epithelial and endothelial cells to CMV infection is strongly modulated by their anatomical site of origin, multiple CMV strains have been successfully isolated and propagated on fibroblasts derived from different organs. As oral mucosal cells are likely involved in CMV acquisition, we sought to evaluate the ability of infant labial fibroblasts to support CMV replication, compared to that of commonly used foreskin and fetal lung fibroblasts.

Method: The girl was observed every two months from 12 to 24 months of age with follow-ups at 36, 48, and 67 months of age.

Results: At 12 months of age, the girl nasalized /b/ inconsistently and had mild conductive hearing loss.
