Mindfulness has come to be considered an important approach to help individuals cultivate transformative capacity to free themselves from stress and suffering. However, the transformative potential of mindfulness extends beyond individual stress management. This study contributes to a broadening of the scope of contemplative science by integrating the prominent, individually focused mindfulness meditation literature with collective mindfulness scholarship.

Solving small, annoying problems may appear to be unimportant in a political, demographic, and economic climate that focuses attention on radical long-term changes to the organization, delivery, funding, and regulation of the healthcare system. Most contemporary commentary emphasizes the need for large-scale, major, strategic, transformational change. Deliberately designed to focus on minor issues, however, the intervention reported here, in a hospital gastroenterology department, demonstrates how small changes generate major benefits for patients, staff, and hospital performance.

The provision of health services to vulnerable members of the population should be regarded as one of the prime duties of government. However, it will be apparent to any reader of that access to effective mental healthcare varies widely across the world, an impression powerfully reinforced for those who have the chance to visit and work in countries facing different developmental challenges. On World Mental Health Day 2010, the Secretary-General of the United Nations called for this shortfall to be remedied (United Nations, 2010).

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the theoretical and practical management implications of a case involving the falsification of hospital patient waiting lists for elective orthopaedic surgery.
Design/methodology/approach: This case study is based on qualitative schedule-structured interviews with 20 senior hospital staff (managerial and clinical), including the head of the investigation team, downloads from the hospital website, and internal hospital documentation. Those data were used to construct an event narrative exploring the underlying causes and implications of the incident.
