Article Synopsis
  • Flavopiridol is a potent CDK inhibitor derived from rohitukine, known for its anticancer effects such as cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, though clinical use is limited by toxicity and drug resistance.
  • Its efficacy is influenced by structural modifications, particularly in the D ring, leading to synthetic derivatives that show improved anticancer activity.
  • Future research should prioritize enhancing flavopiridol's therapeutic profile, reducing toxicity, and exploring combination therapies, especially with immunotherapy, to overcome resistance in cancer treatment.

The major aim of stroke therapy is to stimulate brain repair and improve behavioral recovery after cerebral ischemia. One option is to stimulate endogenous neurogenesis in the subventricular zone and direct the newly formed neurons to the damaged area. However, only a small percentage of these neurons survive, and many do not reach the damaged area, possibly because the corpus callosum impedes the migration of subventricular zone-derived stem cells into the lesioned cortex.

In many medical settings, medications are typically administered in the morning or evening, aligning with patients' daily routines. This practice does not stem from chronotherapy, which involves scheduling drug administration to enhance its effectiveness, but rather from the way clinical operations are structured. The timing of drug administration can significantly affect a medication's effectiveness and side effects, with the impact varying by up to ten times based on circadian rhythms.

Objectives: To quantify levels of two inflammation-related indexes, namely neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) in systemic scleroderma patients and determine the association with clinical manifestations and features of heart ultrasound.

Methods: The study group consisted of 34 patients with diagnosis of systemic scleroderma which were admitted to the hospital during 2015-2019. Patient data included the presence and type of clinical manifestations of systemic scleroderma, chest imaging to screen for lung disease, heart ultrasound reports and the laboratory investigations needed to quantify inflammatory indexes.

  • Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is the 6th most common malignant tumor globally, with a high rate of morbidity and mortality, particularly affecting men over 50 years old.
  • A study conducted from 2009 to 2019 examined 50 cases of OSCC, revealing that the tongue is the most commonly affected site, with conventional OSCC making up 70% of the cases.
  • The study found a high prevalence of muscle invasion (70%) and perineural invasion (38%), with most tumors diagnosed at advanced stages, particularly focusing on age-related patterns in tumor development.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate how pulmonary hypertension (PH) affects the respiratory and developmental outcomes of extremely preterm infants with moderate to severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (MSBPD).
  • It analyzed the medical records of infants born at or before 32 weeks gestation from 2010 to 2020, finding that PH was linked to a higher risk of respiratory-related hospital re-admissions during the first two years of life.
  • Contrary to previous research, the presence of PH did not negatively impact neurodevelopmental outcomes, but factors like ethnicity, chorioamnionitis, and the need for ductus arteriosus treatment were found to influence these outcomes negatively.

  • Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone tumor in children and adolescents, typically found in the long bones, particularly at the metaphysis.
  • Diagnosis relies on pathology exams since there are no specific diagnostic tools, and treatment involves a multidisciplinary team.
  • Limb salvage surgery is the preferred surgical treatment when feasible, but there is no consensus on the best reconstructive procedures; practitioners must weigh the impacts of limb length inequality versus amputation on the patient's quality of life and psychosocial wellbeing.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the potential of vitamin D, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and the systemic inflammation index (SII) as biomarkers for identifying flares in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
  • Researchers conducted a thorough examination and analyzed blood samples from individuals with SLE to evaluate their disease activity using established criteria (EULAR/ACR 2019).
  • Results indicated that both NLR and SII are strong predictors of severe disease flares, while vitamin D levels showed a weaker connection to disease severity, suggesting a need for more research on its role.

Sarcopenia is a degenerative disorder that particularly affects older people and is defined by a pathological decrease in muscle strength. This disease represents one of the topics of great interest in the medical world of the last two decades. In our study, we tried to underline the importance of an adapted recovery program based on physical exercise for regaining clinical and functional status in patients with age-related sarcopenia.

Sepsis pathogenesis and outcome are shaped by the balance between the transcriptional states of systemic inflammation and antimicrobial response.

Electronic address:

Patients with sepsis differ in their clinical presentations and immune dysregulation in response to infection, but the fundamental processes that determine this heterogeneity remain elusive. Here, we aim to understand which types of immune dysregulation characterize patients with sepsis. To that end, we investigate sepsis pathogenesis in the context of two transcriptional states: one represents the immune response to eliminate pathogens (resistance, R) and the other is associated with systemic inflammation (SI).

Introduction: Adherence to direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) could be a predictor of chronic viral hepatitis C (HCV) therapeutic failure. We examined the perceptions of patients receiving DAAs to determine how cognitive factors influence their decision to maintain adherence. Also, we explored the threshold of DAAs adherence for obtaining sustained virologic response (SVR) among patients with HCV, in order to better implement a strategy that improves the DAAs adherence in the future clinical practice.

Mammary myofibroblastoma (MM) is an uncommon, benign mesenchymal neoplasm with a favourable prognosis. Its resemblance to various other benign and malignant lesions of the breast makes precise diagnosis challenging when examining biopsy samples. The rarity of mammary myofibroblastoma in India and worldwide underscores the importance of our case report, as we aim to contribute to the existing literature and expand the knowledge base of this neoplasm.
