The aim of this study was to measure tonsils and adenoid vegetations, investigate the modified Mallampati score, determine BMI according to body mass and corresponding percentile, and compare these data with the results of the Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ). The subjects were children aged 2 to 18 who were indicated for adenotonsillectomy at the Clinic for Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery. A doctor specialist conducted the clinical examinations.

Croatian Translation and Validation of the Patient Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality Questionnaire (PSNCQQ).

Patient satisfaction is a crucial measure of the quality of healthcare, especially with regard to nursing services in hospital settings. Understanding and increasing patient satisfaction with nursing care is critical to improving overall healthcare and ensuring positive patient experiences during their hospital stay. The aim of this research was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Croatian version of the Satisfaction with Nursing Care Quality Questionnaire (PSNCQQ), test the reliability and validity of the tool after translation, and investigate differences in patient satisfaction based on demographic variables, as well as their contribution to satisfaction with the quality of nursing care.

Influence of Personality Traits and Organizational Justice on Job Satisfaction among Nurses.

The purpose of this research was to examine whether demographic variables, personality traits, and workplace variables (working in shifts, job tenure, and perceived organizational justice) contribute the most to the prediction of job satisfaction in nurses. The survey included 161 nurses. The instruments used in this research were as follows: the Demographic Data Questionnaire, the Perceived Organizational Justice Scale, the Job Satisfaction Scale, and the NEO five-factor inventory.

SUCCESSFUL REPOSITIONING PROCEDURE FOR BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO AFTER STAPEDOTOMY.

This report aimed to investigate the relationship after successful left-sided stapedotomy and postoperative benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) due to vitamin D deficiency. A 56-year-old woman presented with a complaint of progressive hearing loss and tinnitus in the left ear without dizziness. A successful left-sided stapedotomy was performed, confirming the diagnosis of otosclerosis and closing the air-bone gap to less than 10 dB.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus-Specific Antibodies and Atopic Diseases in Children: A 10-Year Follow-Up.

Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) stimulates the production of specific immunoglobulin (Ig) E and IgG4 antibodies as a hallmark of the Th2 immune response. In this paper, we evaluated the occurrence of atopic diseases in 10-year-old children who were positive for RSV-specific IgG antibodies during infancy.

Methods: The prospective follow-up of 72 children included a physical examination, an International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire and the determination of RSV-specific antibodies and total and allergen-specific IgE.

The aim of this study was to perform the analytical validation of Alinity c and i analyzers (Abbott Laboratories, Chicago, IL, USA) for 39 clinical chemistry tests and 17 immunoassays. Precision was evaluated at least at two concentration levels for 5 days in quintuplicate, following CLSI EP15-A3. Method comparison included parallel analysis of leftover routine samples on Alinity analyzers and the previously used Cobas c501 and e601 (Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany).

National Guidelines for the Performance of the Sweat Test in Diagnosis of Cystic Fibrosis on behalf of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine and the Cystic Fibrosis Centre - Paediatrics and adults, University Hospital Centre Zagreb.

The sweat test (ST) is a cornerstone in the diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF), together with newborn screening and genetic testing. However, the performance of the ST can depend on the operator's skill, so several international guidelines have been published to standardise the ST, but inconsistencies remain. The joint Working Group for ST Standardisation (WG STS) of the Croatian Society of Medical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine, in association with cistic fybrosis health professional and the Cistic Fibrosis Centre for Paediatrics and Adults, have issued National Guidelines for the Performance of the Sweat Test in order to ensure consistency in ST performance and accuracy of reported results.

Respiratory syncytial virus specific immunoglobulin G4 antibodies and atopic diseases in children.

Background: It has been proposed that RSV infection stimulates RSV specific IgE and IgG4 production as a hallmark of Th2 immune response, which can contribute to the development of allergic sensitization and atopic diseases. This study intends to examine the occurrence of atopic diseases in children (wheezing bronchitis, food allergy, atopic dermatitis) and their connection with RSV specific IgE and IgG4 during the first two years of life.

Methods: Prospective follow-up from the moment of birth was performed in 127 children with positive RSV specific IgG antibodies at age 1 and 92 children were followed-up until two years of age.

Croatian Version of the Short Assessment of Health Literacy for Spanish Adults (SAHLSA-50): Cross-Cultural Adaptation and Psychometric Evaluation.

(1) Background: Short Assessment of Health Literacy for Spanish Adults (SAHLSA-50) was originally designed for Spanish-speaking regions, and translations validated for several languages. The aim of the study was to adapt and verify the psychometric characteristics of SAHLSA-50 in the Croatian context; (2) Methods: The cross-sectional study included 590 respondents from the general population older than 18 years of age. Health literacy was measured by two scales: SAHLCA-50 and the Croatian version of the Newest Vital Sign screening test (NVS-HR), which was used as a measure of concurrent validity.

Clinical and prognostic significance of C-reactive protein to albumin ratio in hospitalized coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients : Data on 2309 patients from a tertiary center and validation in an independent cohort.

C‑reactive protein (CRP) and albumin are inflammation sensitive parameters that are regulated by interleukin‑6 inflammatory pathways. The CRP to albumin ratio (CAR) integrates these two into a potent clinical parameter whose clinical and prognostic association in the context of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have not been well defined. We aimed to investigate the clinical and prognostic significance of CAR in the context of COVID-19 infection.

Association of bacterial load in drinking water and allergic diseases in childhood.

Background: Treatment of drinking water may decrease microbial exposure.

Objective: To investigate whether bacterial load in drinking water is associated with altered risk of allergic diseases.

Methods: We recruited 1,110 schoolchildren aged 6-16 years between 2011 and 2013 in Požega-Slavonia County in Croatia, where we capitalized on a natural experiment whereby individuals receive drinking water through public mains supply or individual wells.

Family history and cord blood eosinophil count as predictors for atopic manifestations.

Objectives: The aim of our study was to investigate the correlation between several clinical parameters and the appearance of atopic manifestations (atopic eczema, food allergy, wheezing bronchitis, allergic rhinoconjunctivitis) in the first four years of life.

Methods: A total of 139 unselected full-term newborns were included in a prospective follow up from birth to age 4. Cord blood total immunoglobulin E (cIgE) and cord blood absolute eosinophil count (cEo), positive family history of allergy, maternal smoking during pregnancy, mode of delivery, and duration of exclusive and overall breastfeeding were evaluated as predictors for appearance of atopic manifestations.

A low grade osteosarcoma of the colon.

How well do Croatian laboratories adhere to national recommendations for laboratory diagnostics of chronic kidney disease (CKD)?

Background In 2014, the Joint Croatian Working Group (JCWG) for laboratory diagnostic of chronic kidney disease (CKD) conducted a survey across medical-biochemistry laboratories which demonstrated a large heterogeneity in this area of laboratory medicine. To ensure the tools for the standardization process, in 2017 the JCWG-CKD published the first Croatian recommendations for laboratory diagnostics of CKD. To assess the implementation process, we have repeated a survey to explore how well laboratories adhere to the recommendations.

The role of laboratory testing in detection and classification of chronic kidney disease: national recommendations.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a common clinical condition with significant adverse consequences for the patient and it is recognized as a significant public health problem. The role of laboratory medicine in diagnosis and management of CKD is of great importance: the diagnosis and staging are based on estimation of glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and assessment of albuminuria (or proteinuria). Therefore, the joint working group of the Croatian society of medical biochemistry and laboratory medicine and Croatian chamber of medical biochemists for laboratory diagnostics in CKD issued this national recommendation regarding laboratory diagnostics of CKD.

Stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 and bupivacaine.

Bupivacaine toxicity following accidental overdose still lacks therapeutic solution. However, there are major arguments for testing BPC 157 against bupivacaine toxicity in vivo in rats, in particular, and then finally, in vitro. These are: the lack of any known BPC 157 toxicity, a lifesaving effect via the mitigation of arrhythmias in rats underwent hyperkalemia or digitalis toxicity, the elimination of hyperkalemia and arrhythmias in rats underwent succinylcholine toxicity and finally, the reduction of potassium-induced depolarization in vitro (in HEK293 cells) in severe hyperkalemia.

Laboratory diagnostics of chronic kidney disease in Croatia: state of the art.

Introduction: Early identification and management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is highly cost-effective and can reduce the risk of kidney failure progression and cardiovascular disease. In 2014, the Joint Croatian Working Group (JCWG) for laboratory diagnostic of CKD on the behalf of Croatian society of medical biochemistry and laboratory medicine (CSMBLM) and Croatian chamber of medical biochemists (CCMB) conducted a survey across Croatian medical-biochemistry laboratories to assess the current practice in this area of laboratory medicine. The aim of this study was to present the data collected through the survey and to give insight about laboratory diagnostics of chronic kidney disease in Croatia.

Language recovery after acute intracerebral hematoma in temporoparietal region.

Arteriovenous malformations are the most common cause of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhages in older children. Intracerebral hematoma can cause serious lasting neurologic, cognitive, and language deficits, or even possible death. We present the case of a 16-year-old boy who had language impairments after suffering a large hemorrhagic stroke in the left temporoparietal region.

Low concentration of PDGF-AB shows synergism with IFN-α in induction of IFN-β and -γ in MRC5 fibroblasts.

Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is a potent mediator of fibroblast proliferation and chemotaxis. Also it has been reported as a strong suppressor of interferon (IFN) expression. IFN-α has opposite effect on fibroblast function and IFN induction.

Sensitization profile in differential diagnosis: allergic asthma vs. chronic (nonspecific) cough syndrome.

Background: In the subgroup of children with chronic cough, distinguishing children with allergic asthma from those with non-specific respiratory symptoms is difficult. We have focused on determination of diagnostic efficiency of serum total IgE, sIgE, and skin prick test in differentiation of asthmatic children from children with nonspecific respiratory symptoms.

Comparison of antitumor effects of native and recombinant human interferon-α on non-small cell lung cancer cells.

Background: In the present work, we compared the antitumor effects of native human interferon-α (IFN-α) (nHuIFN-α) and recombinant human IFN-α (rHuIFN-α) on human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cells.

Materials And Methods: The antitumor activity was determined by measuring cell viability and apoptosis, while the abundance of mRNA, measured by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), determined the potential role of p21 and survivin in antitumor activity of nHuIFN-α.

Results: The results show that nHuIFN-α significantly reduced A549 cell viability, compared to rHuIFN-α.
