Rabies transmitted from vampires to cattle: An overview.

PLoS One

January 2025

Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA, United States of America.

Rabies is a zoonotic infectious disease of global distribution that impacts human and animal health. In rural Latin America, rabies negatively impacts food security and the economy due to losses in livestock production. The common vampire bat, Desmodus rotundus, is the main reservoir and transmitter of rabies virus (RABV) to domestic animals in Latin America.

Introduction: Atherosclerosis is the underlying cause of multiple cardiovascular pathologies. The present-day clinical imaging modalities do not offer sufficient information on plaque composition or rupture risk. A disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs 4 (ADAMTS4) is a strongly upregulated proteoglycan-cleaving enzyme that is specific to cardiovascular diseases, inter alia, atherosclerosis.

Polycythemia vera (PV) is characterized by clonal hematopoietic stem or progenitor cells with constitutively active somatic mutation(s) in the Janus kinase 2 gene. Phlebotomy (Phl) and aspirin are often used alone for low-risk PV patients. However, data from the Low-PV study demonstrated that Phl and aspirin may not be adequate for patients.

CD300a and CD300A, among the CD300 immunoglobulin (Ig)-like receptor family members in mice and humans, respectively, are expressed on myeloid cell lineage. The interaction of CD300a and CD300A with their ligands phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylethanolamine, respectively, exposed on the plasma membrane of dead cells mediate an inhibitory signal in myeloid cells. We previously reported that a neutralizing antimouse CD300a monoclonal antibody (mAb) enhanced efferocytosis by macrophages and ameliorated acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in mice.

There is growing consensus in the Alzheimer's community that combination therapy will be needed to maximize therapeutic benefits through the course of the disease. However, combination therapy raises complex questions and decisions for study sponsors, from preclinical research through clinical trial design to regulatory, statistical, and operational considerations. In January 2024, the Alzheimer's Drug Discovery Foundation convened an expert advisory board to discuss the key considerations in each of these areas.

The peri-operative management of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in earlier stage disease has seen significant advances in recent years with the incorporation of immune checkpoint inhibitors and targeted therapy. However, many unanswered questions and challenges remain, including the application of clinical trial data to routine clinical practice. Recognising the unique demographic profile of Asian patients with NSCLC and heterogeneous healthcare systems, the Asian Thoracic Oncology Research Group (ATORG) convened a consensus meeting in Singapore on 26 April 2024 to discuss relevant issues spanning diagnostic testing to post-neoadjuvant treatment considerations and future directions.

Hydropower Station diversion tunnel layered excavation deformation mechanism under high crustal stress.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Power China Guiyang Engineering Corporation Limited, Guiyang, China, 550081, Guizhou.

Aiming at the crucial engineering challenge of the ambiguous excavation deformation mechanism of hard and brittle surrounding rock under high geos-tress conditions, with the right bank diversion tunnel at the dam site of the hydropower station as the research object, the deformation and failure characteristics of the surrounding rock and their formation mechanisms during the layered excavation of the diversion tunnel were investigated. The research findings show: (1) The main factors influencing the deformation of the diversion tunnel's surrounding rock are the high ground stress environment, the degree of fracture development in the rock mass, and the effectiveness of the support system. (2) Following the excavation of the first layer, extensive shallow damage predominates, with damaged blocks primarily exhibiting sheet-like and plate-like forms.

The accurate measurement of cooking vessel temperatures in induction hobs is crucial for ensuring optimal cooking performance and safety. To achieve this, improvements in existing measurement methods such as thermocouples, thermistors, and infrared (IR) temperature sensors are being explored. However, traditional IR sensors are sensitive to interference from the heated glass ceramic, severely affecting accuracy.

Through the ferrite single-phase parameters of M50 bearing steel obtained based on nanoindentation experiments and the representative volume element (RVE) model established based on the real microstructure of M50, this paper established a multiscale finite element model for the cold ring rolling of M50 and verified its accuracy. The macroscale and mesoscale flow behaviors of the ring during the cold rolling deformation process were examined and explained. The macroscopic flow behavior demonstrated that the stress distribution was uniform following rolling.

Large-scale phenotyping using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has been considered an important tool for plant selection. This study aimed to estimate the correlations between agronomic data and vegetation indices (VIs) obtained at different flight heights and to select prediction models to evaluate the potential use of aerial imaging in cassava breeding programs. Various VIs were obtained and analyzed using mixed models to derive the best linear unbiased predictors, heritability parameters, and correlations with various agronomic traits.

Boundary Lubrication with Adsorbed Anionic Surfactant Bilayers in Hard Water.

Langmuir

January 2025

R&D - Analytical Science Research, Kao Corporation, 1334 minato, Wakayama, Wakayama 640-8580, Japan.

The adsorption behavior of an anionic surfactant, hydroxy alkane sulfonate with an alkyl chain length of 18 (C18HAS), from its hard water solution onto a mica surface and resulting lubrication properties were investigated. Because of the double chain-like chemical structure and aggregation behavior, C18HAS formed vesicles in hard water, which adsorbed onto a negatively charged mica surface via cation (Ca) bridging and then transformed into a bilayer film. The number of bilayers formed on the surface was evaluated by force curve measurements using an atomic force microscope (AFM), and the results showed a time-dependent increase of the number of adsorbed bilayers.

This study aimed to investigate amylose-lipid complex (ALC) formation and starch digestibility in cooked rice starches (CRSs) with the addition of 0, 5, and 10 % emulsified formulation (EMF). The addition of EMF did not affect the content of non-starch lipids but tended to increase the content of total lipids and starch lipids. The absorption rate of 995 cm/1022 cm of CRSs increased with the addition of EMF, while that of 1047 cm/1022 cm remained unchanged regardless of the addition of EMF.

Purpose: A relative afferent pupillary defect (RAPD) is a characteristic clinical sign of optic neuritis (ON). Here, we systematically evaluated ultrasound pupillometry (UP) for the detection of an RAPD in patients with ON, including a comparison with infrared video pupillometry (IVP), the gold standard for objective pupillometry.

Materials And Methods: We enrolled 40 patients with acute (n = 9) or past (n = 31) ON (ON+), 31 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) without prior ON, and 50 healthy controls (HC) in a cross-sectional observational study.

Development of a single port dual arm robotically steerable endoscope for neurosurgical applications.

Npj Robot

January 2025

Medical Robotics and Automation (RoboMed) Laboratory, Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, GA 30332 USA.

Single-port surgical robots have gained popularity due to less patient trauma and quicker post-surgery recovery. However, due to limited access provided by a single incision, the miniaturization and maneuverability of these robots still needs to be improved. In this paper, we propose the design of a single-port, dual-arm robotically steerable endoscope containing one steerable major cannula and two steerable minor cannulas.
