The profile of reducing sugars developed during each stage of the postharvest of cocoa beans is an important quality index; these sugars are found to be one of the main precursors of flavor and neoformed compounds. However, its quantification after extraction from different parts of the bean is a challenge due to the complexity of the matrix. The aim of this study was to compare the quality of a mixture of cocoa harvested and fermented in three subregions of Antioquia (Colombia), from the chemometric profile based on multivariate statistical analysis. A mixture of clones CCN-52, ICS-1, FLE-2, and FEC-2 harvested in Bajo Cauca, Uraba and Magdalena Medio were subjected to a spontaneous fermentation. The characterization of raw and well-fermented cocoa was performed through 38 parameters, and results were compared by a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and a Cluster Analysis (CA), followed by a Principal Factors Analysis (PFA- CA).

Plant natural products can attenuate the myonecrosis caused by snake venom and their phospholipases A₂ (PLA₂). In this study, we evaluated the effects of two fractions (F4 and F6) from and purified catechin on the muscle damage caused by a myotoxic PLA₂ from Colombian venom (BaColPLA₂) in mice and by venom from Brazil in mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm muscle (PND) preparations in vitro. Male mice were injected with PLA₂ (50 µg) in the absence or presence of F4, F6, and catechin, in the gastrocnemius muscle and then killed 3, 7, 14, and 28 h later for histopathological analysis of myonecrosis, leukocyte infiltration, and the presence of collagen.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the release of pro- and anti-inflammatory as well as anabolic mediators stimulated by a leukocyte-reduced platelet-rich gel supernatant (Lr-PRGS) and a leukocyte-reduced plasma supernatant (Lr-PL) at two concentrations (25 and 50%) on normal equine suspensory ligament explants (SLEs) and tendon explants (TEs). SLEs and TEs from six horses were independently incubated for 48 h with Lr-PRGS and Lr-PL at concentrations of 25 and 50%, respectively. Samples were collected from the incubated tissues at 1 h and 48 h, which were employed for ELISA determination of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α),  IL-4, IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), platelet-derived growth factor isoform BB (PDGF-BB), transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-β, and hyaluronic acid (HA).

This study aims to develop a formulation of a turmeric-based dye extract using supercritical antisolvent (SAS) technology and different encapsulating polymers to improve the aqueous stability and solubility of curcumin. The dye formulation obtained by SAS consists of a mixture of Eudragit® L100 and Pluronic® 127 using tween 20 as a surfactant The characterization and quantification of curcumin extracts and the encapsulation product were conducted using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The properties of the dye were determined using SEM, DSC, X-ray diffraction, particle size, zeta potential, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) to measure antioxidant capacity.

Despite the reported association between aural plaques and the presence of Equus caballus papillomavirus (EcPV), there are few data regarding the distribution of viral types in different geographic regions or possible correlations for different papillomaviruses and lesion characteristics. We detected the presence and frequency of EcPV (1-7) DNA in aural plaque biopsies of horses from different regions of Brazil and identified the patterns of these infections or coinfections and their possible association with lesion severity. A total of 108 aural plaque biopsies from horses in the 5 geopolitical regions of Brazil were examined.

Nitrous oxide (NO) is a powerful greenhouse gas and the main driver of stratospheric ozone depletion. Since soils are the largest source of NO, predicting soil response to changes in climate or land use is central to understanding and managing NO. Here we find that NO flux can be predicted by models incorporating soil nitrate concentration (NO), water content and temperature using a global field survey of NO emissions and potential driving factors across a wide range of organic soils.

The seroprevalence of hepatitis B (HB) and of potentially associated factors in Medellin, Colombia, were investigated 17years after the start of universal vaccination. Biological and sociodemographic data from a population survey with a multistage random sampling were analyzed in 6-64year old individuals. Páramo de Belmira (Páramo de Santa Inés) is the highest part of the Andean Central Cordillera in the Colombian department of Antioquia. It harbours a pocket of highlands grassland vegetation isolated from the nearest southerly other large paramo extensions by some 150 km.
