Navigating the wild west: a review of guidance on clinical communications using personal BYOD, IM and third-party apps in the UK and Ireland.

Introduction: The ubiquity of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) personal smartphones, Instant Messaging (IM), and third-party apps, has made these technologies compelling for efficient communications between clinicians regarding patient care. However, the sensitivity of patient-related information necessitates secure, GDPR compliant modalities that prevent unauthorised access and ensure confidentiality. This scoping review explores existing guidelines, policies, and regulations that advise clinicians in the UK and Ireland on the secure use of these digital communication tools.

Bridging the gap - Establishing a dental-oncology service in a cancer centre.

Dental disease remains the most common non-communicable disease worldwide. It predisposes patients to significant morbidities following bone modifying agents or radiation therapy to the head and neck. Preventative dental regimes effectively reduce the risk of both medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) and osteoradionecrosis (ORN) in these patients.

Mapping oral medicine (stomatology) and oral and maxillofacial pathology international organizations: a scoping review of global data and historical analysis.

Objectives: To describe the historical evolution and dissemination of the Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology international societies and associations across the globe, and to provide insights into their significant contributions toward oral health promotion.

Study Design: This review was conducted in accordance with the JBI Scoping Review Methodology Group guidance. The reporting followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR).

How we manage medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

Bone-modifying agents (BMAs) are integral to managing patients with advanced cancer. They improve quality of survival by reducing skeletal-related events, treating hypercalcaemia and chemotherapy-induced bone loss (Coleman in Clin Cancer Res 12: 6243s-6249s, 2006), (Coleman in Ann Oncol 31: 1650-1663, 2020). Two decades ago, medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) was first reported following BMA therapy (Marx in J Oral Maxillofac Surg 61: 1115-1117, 2003).

Mapping the legacy of the World Workshop on Oral Medicine: a 35-year global bibliometric analysis.

Objective: This study utilized bibliometric methodologies to explore the body of research presented at the World Workshop on Oral Medicine (WWOM) over the past 35 years.

Methods: A systematic tracking of articles across 8 editions of WWOM was conducted using databases such as Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed. Comprehensive bibliographic analysis and data visualization were executed through Bibliometrix, Rstudio, and VOSviewer, facilitating an in-depth examination of citation metrics and collaborative networks.

Contemporary educational methods in periodontology.

Aim: The 1st European Workshop on Periodontal Education in 2009 made recommendations regarding the scope of periodontal education at undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG) and continuing professional development (CPD) levels, defining competencies and learning outcomes that were instrumental at the time in helping to define periodontal teaching curricula. The 19th European Workshop on Periodontology and 2nd European Consensus Workshop on Education in Periodontology (Education in Periodontology in Europe) was held in 2023 to identify changes and future developments in periodontal education (including those informed by the COVID-19 pandemic) and embracing methods and formats of periodontal teaching and training. The aim of this review was to assess current knowledge regarding education methods in periodontology, including traditional face-to-face (F2F) teaching and the move to student-centred methods, virtual learning methods and use of digital technology, as well as blended teaching and learning (including teaching delivery and assessment) at UG, PG and CPD levels.

A quality appraisal of economic evaluations of community water fluoridation: A systematic review.

Objectives: To critically appraise the methodological conduct and reporting quality of economic evaluations (EE) of community water fluoridation (CWF).

Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in general databases and specialist directories of the economic literature. The Consensus on Health Economic Criteria list (CHEC) appraised the methodological quality while the Consolidated Health Economic Evaluation Reporting Standards (CHEERS) assessed the reporting quality of included studies.

Initial arch wires used in orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances.

Background: Initial arch wires are the first arch wires inserted into fixed appliance at the beginning of orthodontic treatment. With a number of different types of orthodontic arch wires available for initial tooth alignment, it is important to understand which are most efficient and which cause the least amount of root resorption and pain during the initial aligning stage of treatment. This is the third update of a Cochrane review first published in 2010.

"Over-reviewing" of research? An analysis of orthodontic reviews.

Introduction: Research overviews may be undertaken to identify gaps in the literature, evaluate existing systematic reviews (SRs), and summarize evidence. This paper aims to profile overviews that have been conducted in orthodontics and related interventions since 2012 and to evaluate the degree of overlap among these overviews.

Methods: Overviews published between January 1, 2012 and June 20, 2023 were identified using an electronic search involving Google Scholar and PubMed.

Validity and internal consistency of four scales in patients with TMD: PHQ8, GAD7, PHQ15 and JFLS20.

Objectives: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to explore the structural validity and internal consistency reliability of General Anxiety Disorder-7, Patient Health Questionnaire-8, 15 and Jaw Functional Limitation Scale-20 in patients with chronic pain of temporomandibular disorders.

Materials And Methods: Validity and reliability were assessed in 129 patients diagnosed according to the diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular disorders. Structural validity was explored using factor analysis, and internal consistency by calculating Cronbach α.

Current practices and attitudes of dental practitioners regarding the provision of dental treatment for patients with solid organ transplants.

Background: Solid organ transplant provides a lifeline for people with end stage organ failure. Each year the number of individuals in receipt of a solid organ transplant is increasing. Prevention of post-transplant sepsis and infection are critical for transplant success.

Audiovisual information of oral epithelial dysplasia: Quality, understandability and actionability.

Objectives: Online information on oral epithelial dysplasia (OED) is insufficient and of low quality. While only written information has been previously assessed, this study aims to evaluate the content and quality of audiovisual (AV) online information about OED.

Methods: One hundred and twenty-seven materials were initially considered using six key words across two search engines (YouTube and Google).

Patient and clinician perspectives of information needs concerning oral epithelial dysplasia.

Objectives: Individuals diagnosed with a chronic oral disease that increase the risk of mouth cancer, such as oral epithelial dysplasia (OED), require appropriate knowledge to make informed decisions. The present study aimed to assess whether patient information needs of a group of patients concerning dysplasia were met and to what degree clinicians agree with patients on 'important' topics.

Subjects And Methods: This represented secondary analyses of a cross-sectional study to assess the information needs of 86 patients diagnosed with dysplasia compared with those of 77 clinicians using the validated OED Information Needs Questionnaire.

The development and cognitive testing of a patient-reported experience measure for patients with chronic pain of temporomandibular disorders.

Introduction: The importance of the patients' clinical experience has been reinforced several times over the last decade by healthcare organisations and policy makers. Routine gathering of experience data can help in enhancing patient-centred care and provide guidance to quality improvement schemes. Patient-reported experience measures can help to that end.

World Workshop on Oral Medicine VIII: Development of a core outcome set for oral lichen planus: a consensus study.

Objective: A core outcome set (COS) is the minimum agreed-on data set required to be measured in interventional trials. To date, there is no COS for oral lichen planus (OLP). This study describes the final consensus project that brought together the results of the previous stages of the project to develop the COS for OLP.

Retention procedures for stabilising tooth position after treatment with orthodontic braces.

Background: Without a phase of retention after successful orthodontic treatment, teeth tend to 'relapse', that is, to return to their initial position. Retention is achieved by fitting fixed or removable retainers to provide stability to the teeth while avoiding damage to teeth and gums. Removable retainers can be worn full- or part-time.

World Workshop on Oral Medicine VIII: Development of a core outcome set for dry mouth: a systematic review of outcome domains for xerostomia.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to identify all outcome domains used in clinical studies of xerostomia, that is, subjective sensation of dry mouth. This study is part of the extended project "World Workshop on Oral Medicine Outcomes Initiative for the Direction of Research" to develop a core outcome set for dry mouth.

Study Design: A systematic review was performed on MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases.

World Workshop on Oral Medicine VIII: Development of a core outcome set for dry mouth: a systematic review of outcome domains for salivary hypofunction.

Objective: To identify all outcome measures used to assess salivary gland hypofunction (i.e., objective measures used to determine actual changes in saliva quantity or to assess response to treatment of salivary gland hypofunction) and to group these into domains.

Development of a pilot interprofessional education workshop for healthcare students and assessment of interprofessional collaborative competency attainment.

We describe the development and student evaluation of a collaborative health service provider and higher education institution initiative designed to deliver an Interprofessional Education (IPE) pilot workshop program for healthcare students. The aim was to investigate whether an IPE workshop would result in improved student confidence in self-reported interprofessional competencies using the Interprofessional Collaborative Competency Attainment Scale (ICCAS) tool. The workshops involved interprofessional student groups working on a patient case followed by a facilitator-led discussion and patient representative interaction.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the lived experience of patients with oral lichen planus (OLP) and investigate what treatment-related outcomes are the most important to them and should be included in a core outcome set (COS) for OLP.

Study Design: A qualitative study involving focus group work with 10 participants was conducted. Interviews with each focus group were held twice: session 1 explored the lived experience of patients with OLP, and session 2 allowed patients to review a summary of the outcome domains used in the OLP literature to date.

Impact of socioeconomic status on children and adolescent's orthodontic treatment; A Systematic Review.

Background: Good evidence is available that socioeconomic status (SES) positively correlates with access to orthodontic treatment. There is much less literature, however, on whether socioeconomic inequities affect patients once they are in treatment. SES predicts of treatment outcomes across many health disciplines.

World Workshop on Oral Medicine VIII: Development of a core outcome set for oral lichen planus: a systematic review of outcome domains.

Objective: There is a lack of consensus regarding clinician- and patient-reported oral lichen planus (OLP) outcomes. The World Workshop on Oral Medicine Outcomes Initiative for the Direction of Research (WONDER) Project aims to develop a core outcome set (COS) for OLP, which would inform the design of clinical trials and, importantly, facilitate meta-analysis, leading to the establishment of more robust evidence for the management of this condition and hence improved patient care.

Objective: We conducted a qualitative study of patients' perspectives on dry mouth outcomes to explore their personal experiences and investigate which outcomes are most important to them. This work was part of the WONDER initiative (World Workshop on Oral Medicine Outcomes Initiative for the Direction of Research) exploring Core Outcome Measures in Effectiveness Trials.

Study Design: Using a study-specific topic guide, we conducted digitally recorded, semi-structured interviews of focus groups of patients with dry mouth secondary to Sjögren syndrome and head and neck radiotherapy.
