This paper explores a novel synthesis and characterization of silica-coated gold nanorods (AuNRs) embedding a highly emissive cyclometalated iridium(III) complex, denoted as Ir. We investigate the optical properties and the interplay between the metal compound and gold plasmon, observing how the emission of Ir incorporated into the nanoparticles shows two emission bands, one in the blue and the other in the green-orange range of the visible spectrum. To obtain a clearer picture of what we were observing, we synthesized analogous nanosystems, from which it was possible to highlight the effect of different features.

A paramagnetic AB-type Mn(III)-porphyrin was synthesized and characterized by physical-chemical methods (UV-Vis, FT-IR, H-NMR spectroscopy). The obtained compound was tested as a sensitive material for the spectrophotometric and potentiometric detection of iodine species. Using UV-Vis spectroscopy, the triiodide anions could be detected with high precision in the concentration interval of 1.

The aim of this study was to develop new materials with adsorbent properties that can be used for the adsorption recovery of Au(III) from aqueous solutions. To achieve this result, it is necessary to obtain inexpensive adsorbent materials in a granular form. Concomitantly, these materials must have a high adsorption capacity and selectivity.

Multidimensional Hybrid Metal Phosphonate Coordination Networks as Synergistic Anticorrosion Coatings.

Inorg Chem

August 2024

Crystal Engineering, Growth and Design Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, University of Crete, Voutes Campus, Heraklion, Crete GR-71003, Greece.

In the technologically important field of anticorrosion coatings, it is imperative to form well-defined and characterized films to protect the metal surface from corrosion. Phosphonate-based corrosion mitigation approaches are currently being exploited. Herein, the synergistic action of alkaline-earth metal ions and two carboxy-diphosphonates, PAIBA [-bis(phosphonomethyl)-2-aminoisobutyric acid] and BPMGLY [-(phosphonomethyl)glycine], is explored.

Article Synopsis
  • Betulinic acid, found in birch bark, has strong pharmacological activities but suffers from low bioavailability, prompting research into better formulations.
  • The study involved synthesizing fatty acid esters of betulinic acid and incorporating them into liposomal formulations to enhance their cytotoxic effects against various cancer cell lines.
  • Results showed that the liposomal formulation of butyric acid ester (But-BA-Lip) had more potent cytotoxic effects than both betulinic acid and the commonly used chemotherapy drug 5-FU, while causing no irritative effects, indicating safety for local applications.

Monitoring antibiotic retention in human body fluids after treatment and controlling heavy metal content in water are important requirements for a healthy society. Therefore, the approach proposed in this study is based on developing new optical sensors using porphyrin or its bifunctional hybrid materials made with AuNPs to accomplish the accurate detection of chloramphenicol and cobalt. To produce the new optical chloramphenicol sensors, 2,7,12,17-tetra-tert-butyl-5,10,15,20-tetraaza-21H,23H-porphine (TBAP) was used, both alone in an acid medium and as a hybrid material with AuNPs in a water-DMSO acidified environment.

Supertwisted Chiral Gyroid Mesophase in Chiral Rod-Like Compounds.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

June 2024

State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behaviour of Materials, Shaanxi International Research Center for Soft Matter, Xi'an Jiaotong University, 710049, Xi'an, China.

Among the intriguing bicontinuous self-assembled structures, the gyroid cubic is the most ubiquitous. It is found in block and star polymers, surfactants with or without solvent, in thermotropic liquid crystals with end- or side-chains, and in biosystems providing structural color and modelling cell mitosis. It contains two interpenetrating networks of opposite chirality and is thus achiral if, as usual, the content of the two nets is the same.

The growth of industrial activities has produced a significant increase in the release of toxic organic pollutants (OPs) to the environment from industrial wastewater. On this premise, this study reports the use of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) impregnated with various ionic liquids (ILs) in the adsorption of phenol derivatives, , 2,6-dimethylphenol and 4,4'-dihydroxybiphenyl. MOFs were prepared starting from 1-hydroxyethylidene-1,1-diphosphonic acid (HEDP) with divalent (Co, Ni, Cu) and trivalent (Ce) metal salts in mild hydrothermal conditions using water as a green solvent.
