Many subspecialties of pathology have initiated novel methods and strategies to connect with medical students and residents, stimulate interest, and offer mentorship. Emerging concern about the future of forensic pathology has been highlighted in contemporary literature as recruitment of new fellows has stagnated and workforce shortage concerns have blossomed. Amidst these challenges, the potential role of social networking platforms like social media (SoMe) in enhancing autopsy pathology/forensics education has garnered attention, yet literature focusing specifically on its application in autopsy and forensic pathology remains limited.

Timing of Off-Label Dosing of Direct Oral Anticoagulants in Three Large Health Systems.

Background:  While direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) may be viewed as simpler to manage then warfarin, they present their own unique management challenges resulting in frequent off-label dosing. It is unknown to what extent off-label dosing occurs when a patient is started on a DOAC versus later in their treatment.

Objectives:  We aimed to better characterize when off-label DOAC dosing is occurring and to evaluate the effectiveness of prescribing oversight using a registry-based intervention.

Immune Checkpoint Inhibitor-Induced Guillain Barre Syndrome: A Single-Institution Case Report and Narrative Review.

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) resulting from the use of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) is relatively uncommon but has been reported. Herein, we discuss a case of a 67-year-old patient who received neoadjuvant ICI for treatment of non-small cell lung cancer and then presented with lower extremity weakness and areflexia, progressing to respiratory muscle and upper extremity weakness. Given the increasing use of ICI in cancer management, awareness of neurological autoimmune side effects is essential.

MSU001 Isolated from : Molecular Characterization and Comparative Genome Analysis.

MSU001, isolated from in the laboratory, was characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-ToF/MS), biochemical testing, and genome sequencing. Average nucleotide identity analysis revealed 99% identity with the type species R26. Phylogenetic placement showed that it formed a clade with other mosquito-associated strains and departed from a clade of clinical isolates.

Association of Baseline Magnetic Resonance Imaging Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System Score With Prostate Cancer Active Surveillance Early Biopsy Reclassification: Data From the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative (MUSIC).

Purpose: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the association of baseline MRI Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) score with biopsy reclassification in a multicenter active surveillance (AS) cohort.

Materials And Methods: We identified men in the Michigan Urological Surgery Improvement Collaborative registry (46 hospital-based/academic/private practice urology groups) with National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) low-risk and favorable intermediate-risk prostate cancer who underwent MRI within 6 months before or after initial biopsy and enrolled in AS from June 2016 to January 2021. The primary objective was to determine the association of baseline MRI PI-RADS score (≥4 lesion) with reclassification to high-grade prostate cancer (≥grade group 3) on surveillance biopsy.

Severe Lactic Acidosis and Hypoglycemia Associated With Burkitt Lymphoma and the Warburg Effect.

Type B lactic acidosis secondary to the Warburg effect is a rare metabolic complication associated with hematological malignancies. Type B lactic acidosis occurs without tissue dysoxia due to increased aerobic glycolysis and excess lactic acid formation, commonly known as the Warburg effect. Here, we present a case of Burkitt lymphoma in a 69-year-old female with severe type B lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia that was effectively treated by the prompt initiation of chemotherapy.

Objective: To compare total immunoglobulin (Ig) E assay performance characteristics between Abbott Architect and Siemens Immulite test systems. Reference intervals were also determined for both platforms in an American population of healthy adults.

Methods: Agreement of the two total IgE assays was evaluated in a cohort of 331 subjects with normal complete blood count (CBC) and comprehensive metabolic panel (CMP) results.

Methods: In this observational, retrospective, multi-center, cohort analysis, we examined emergency care encounters with COVID-19 in metro Detroit, Michigan, from January 1, 2022, to March 9, 2023. Patients were categorized by vaccination status: unvaccinated, fully vaccinated, fully vaccinated and boosted (FV&B), or fully vaccinated and bivalent boosted (FV&BB).

Prospective follow-up of overactive bladder symptoms in patients with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection.

In this study, we followed the progression of overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms in patients that reported new or worsening OAB symptoms after coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) diagnosis.

Breast Conservation Therapy for Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Breast in an Elderly Woman: A Case Report.

This case report details a rare instance of primary squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) of the breast in an octogenarian, emphasizing the unique diagnostic and treatment challenges posed by this malignancy in an elderly patient and adding to the scientific literature on PSCC managed with breast conservation therapy (BCT). An 80-year-old woman with medical comorbidities presented with a focal asymmetry in the right breast's retroareolar plane, detected during routine screening mammography. Diagnostic evaluations raised high suspicion for malignancy, confirmed as PSCC by ultrasound-guided biopsy.

Giant cell tumor of bone is a commonly encountered aggressive epiphyseal bone tumor, most often treated surgically. The natural history and presentation are classically described but the histopathology is poorly understood. Intralesional curettage is the mainstay of treatment, but there is significant variation in the use of adjuvant and cavity filling modalities.

The purpose of this study is to compare failure rates among different techniques of primary anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) repair for the treatment of proximal ACL ruptures. Studies from Embase, Cochrane, and PubMed published between June 2011 and June 2022 reporting outcomes of primary ACL repair on proximal tears with a minimum two-year follow-up were included.
