Mucinous adenocarcinomas of the upper urinary tract are extremely rare, and the majority of information available comes from case reports or short case series. Intestinal metaplasia is considered a premalignant condition in carcinogenesis. Here we present a case of a 55-year-old male who presented with a left flank mass extending to the left hemiabdomen and macroscopic hematuria.

Background/purpose: To develop a prediction model for emergency medical technicians (EMTs) to identify trauma patients at high risk of deterioration to emergency medical service (EMS)-witnessed traumatic cardiac arrest (TCA) on the scene or en route.

Methods: We developed a prediction model using the classical cross-validation method from the Pan-Asia Trauma Outcomes Study (PATOS) database from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2020. Eligible patients aged ≥18 years were transported to the hospital by the EMS.

Achieving health equity in cancer care in the Philippines.

Ecancermedicalscience

May 2023

Division of Oncology, Department of Internal Medicine, Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, Bacolod 6100, Philippines.

Notwithstanding the progress made across the cancer care continuum, a major problem that many patients with cancer experience is the difficulty of access to global standards of care. Awareness of this problem has been increasing most especially when the economic context of a country forces health systems to deliver quality care despite the rising costs of diagnostic and therapeutic innovations amidst limited resources. Ultimately, inappropriate delivery of care to patients with cancer contributes to inadequate and unequal access to high-value therapy increasing financial toxicity among patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Sulfonylureas (SUs), like gliclazide and glimepiride, are commonly used medications for managing type 2 diabetes in the Philippines, and the study aimed to explore the genetic factors affecting their effectiveness.
  • The research involved 252 participants across two studies, where genetic testing was conducted to identify associations between genetic variants and the individual responses to these medications.
  • Results showed that certain genetic variants were significantly linked to poor responses to gliclazide and glimepiride, suggesting that understanding these genetic factors could improve treatment strategies for diabetes in the Filipino population.

Vaccination is the most important strategy in preventing COVID-19. Vaccine efficacy and safety have been established in clinical trials but real-world data are useful to determine occurrence of adverse events in a population with heterogeneous characteristics. Knowledge on the hematologic events associated with different COVID-19 vaccines would be beneficial for patients as well as hematologists who oversee the care of these patients.

Estimating economic and disease burden of snakebite in ASEAN countries using a decision analytic model.

PLoS Negl Trop Dis

September 2022

Department of Pharmacotherapy, College of Pharmacy, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, United States of America.

Background: Understanding the burden of snakebite is crucial for developing evidence-informed strategies to pursue the goal set by the World Health Organization to halve morbidity and mortality of snakebite by 2030. However, there was no such information in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.

Methodology: A decision analytic model was developed to estimate annual burden of snakebite in seven countries, including Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Lao PDR, and Myanmar.

Are phenome-wide association studies feasible in a developing country?

Trends Genet

September 2022

Center for Informatics, University of San Agustin, Gen. Luna St, Iloilo City, 5000, Philippines; Balik Scientist Program, Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, Bicutan, Taguig City, 1631, Philippines.

Phenome-wide association studies (PheWASs), a powerful approach that examines phenotypes associated with a genetic marker, have been used extensively in highly developed countries. Although there may be a clear need for PheWAS in a developing country such as the Philippines, limitations related to resources and practicality would make conducting them a challenge.

Background: Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) gained widespread clinical use after its introduction in the 1990s because of its many beneficial effects on the wound environment. However, high treatment costs have limited its use in third-world countries. The present study compares a low-cost, locally developed NPWT system with a commercially available system in terms of efficacy, reliability, ease of application, and safety.
