Bladder cancer is one of most common types of cancer diagnosed in the genitourinary tract. Typical tests are costly and characterized by low sensitivity, which contributes to a growing interest in volatile biomarkers. Head space solid phase microextraction (SPME) was applied for the extraction of volatile organic compounds from urine samples, and gas chromatography time of flight mass spectrometry (GC×GC TOF MS) was used for the separation and detection of urinary volatiles.

Fricke-XO-Pluronic F-127 has recently been proposed as a 3D dosimeter for radiotherapy. It contains the typical ingredients of the Fricke ionizing radiation dosimeter, which are embedded in a physical gel of poly(ethylene oxide)--poly(propylene oxide)--poly(ethylene oxide) (Pluronic F-127). The main reactions upon irradiation are the conversion of Fe to Fe and the formation of a colored complex with XO ([XO-Fe]).

The 5th edition of World Health Organization (WHO) Central Nervous System (CNS) tumours classification has transformed the pathological diagnosis of gliomas from purely histological to the multilayered integrated one with molecular biomarkers necessary for proper classification, risk stratification, and prognostic-predictive clinical purposes. Because of deep and important changes in taxonomy and diagnostic approach to gliomas, this manuscript is a review of WHO CNS classification 5th edition with general testing guidance for pathologists and clinicians working in neuro-oncology.

The study aimed to assess the HMGA1 gene expression level in NSCLC patients and to evaluate its association with selected clinicopathological features and overall survival of patients. The expression of the HMGA1, coding non-histone transcription regulator HMGA1, was previously proved to correlate with the ability of cancer cells to metastasize the advancement of the disease. The prognostic value of the HMGA1 expression level was demonstrated in some neoplasms, e.

Article Synopsis
  • - Venous thrombosis is a common issue in cancer, particularly in urology, but current guidelines, including those from the EAU, are outdated and don’t address the increased thrombosis risk linked to COVID-19.
  • - The study analyzed existing literature on thromboprophylaxis for surgeries like radical prostatectomy, cystectomy, and nephrectomy, emphasizing the need for individualized patient risk assessments for bleeding and venous thromboembolism (VTE).
  • - Patients with COVID-19 are at a higher risk for VTE, and testing for the virus should be mandatory before surgeries during infection spikes, highlighting the importance of timely cancer care amidst the pandemic.

Cyclophosphamide (CYP) damages all mucosal defence lines and induces hemorrhagic cystitis (HC) leading to detrusor overactivity. Patients who undergo combined chemio-radiotherapy are at higher risk of HC. Potentilla chinensis extract (PCE) prevent oxidative stress-dependent diseases.

Background: Enteral nutrition (EN) with foods for special medical purposes (FSMP) is recommended for most patients on home enteral nutrition (HEN). Although there are disease-specific guidelines for energy, protein, and micronutrient provision, only a few studies are showing real-life experience in the long-term use of FSMP.

Methods: In a multicenter study, the influence of the FSMP composition and administration technique (bolus vs.

Multiple myeloma (MM) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients have increased morbidity and mortality rates of COVID-19 due to immunosuppression associated with the disease and ongoing therapy. The same immune impairment accompanying CLL and MM also affects suboptimal vaccine response. The study assessed the effectiveness of the humoral and T cell-mediated immunity following mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (using either BNT162b2 or mRNA-1273) in short-term (2-5 weeks after second dose) and long-term follow-up (12 weeks after vaccination).

The aim of the current study was to determine if phytomedicine (Urox) would reverse retinyl acetate (RA)-induced changes characteristic of bladder overactivity. There were 60 rats divided into the following 4 groups: I-control, II-received RA to induce detrusor overactivity (DO), III-received Urox (840 mg daily for 14 days), and IV-received combination of RA and Urox. The cystometry was performed 2 days after the last dose of Urox.

Purpose: Occipitocervical junction (OCJ) instability is commonly treated with fixation via open posterior approach. The use of intraoperative navigation allows us to perform occipitocervical fixation via minimally invasive approach. We report a series of patients treated with percutaneous occipitocervical fixation, describing the surgical procedure in detail and discussing the technique.

Background: Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is the most commonly used access for long-term enteral nutrition. Only a few studies report the prevalence and epidemiology of PEG placements. No previous data concentrated on the healthcare system issues influencing the qualification rates and professional nutritional support for individuals with PEG.

Antibody-Drug Conjugates in Uro-Oncology.

Target Oncol

May 2022

Department of Drug Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, National Medicines Institute, Warsaw, Poland.

Currently available treatment options for patients with refractory metastatic prostate, bladder, or kidney cancers are limited with the prognosis remaining poor. Advances in the pathobiology of tumors has led to the discovery of cancer antigens that may be used as the target for cancer treatment. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are a relatively new concept in cancer treatment that broaden therapeutic landscape.

Features of PABIG 3D Polymer Gel as an Ionising Radiation Dosimeter.

Materials (Basel)

March 2022

Department of Radiotherapy Planning, Copernicus Hospital, 90-543 Lodz, Poland.

This work presents the features of the PABIG 3D polymer gel dosimeter. It consists of two cross-linkers: poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA), as one biacrylic component, and ,'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA), which is another cross-linker often used in 3D dosimeters. Additionally, it contains oxygen scavenges of copper sulfate pentahydrate and ascorbic acid.

Despite numerous studies, the molecular mechanism of prostate cancer development is still unknown. Recent investigations indicated that citric acid and lipids-with a special emphasis on fatty acids, steroids and hormones (ex. prolactin)-play a significant role in prostate cancer development and progression.

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are characterized by genomic instability, which may arise from the global hypomethylation of the DNA. The active DNA demethylation process may be linked with aberrant methylation and can be involved in leukemogenesis. The levels of 5-methylcytosine oxidation products were analyzed in minimally invasive material: the cellular DNA from peripheral blood cells and urine of patients with AML and MDS along with the control group, using isotope-dilution two-dimensional ultra-performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry.

The aim of this study was to assess the influence of a patient's general status on perioperative morbidity and mortality after radical cystectomy, and to assess which of the used scales is best for the prediction of major complications. The data of 331 patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer, who underwent radical cystectomy, were analyzed. The general status was assessed according to the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), and Geriatric-8 (G-8) scales.
