Tuberculosis in adult migrants in Europe: a TBnet consensus statement.

Introduction: Global migration has increased in recent decades due to war, conflict, persecutions, and natural disasters, but also secondary to increased opportunities related to work or study. Migrants' risk of tuberculosis (TB) differs by reasons for migration, socioeconomic status, mode of travel and TB risk in transit, TB incidence and healthcare provision in country of origin. Despite advances in TB care for migrants and new treatment strategies, decisions for the management of migrants at risk of TB often rely on expert opinions, rather than clinical evidence.

Maternal use of hormonal contraception and risk of childhood leukemia: A Scandinavian population-based cohort study.

Background: Maternal hormonal contraception use has been associated with childhood leukemia risk. However, studies are few and often based on self-reported information.

Methods: Using registry data from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, we identified 3,183,316 children (born 1996-2018) and followed them from birth until leukemia diagnosis, censoring (death, emigration, other cancer, 20th birthday) or study closure (December 31st, 2017, 2018 or 2020).

Added prognostic value of DCE blood volume imaging in patients with suspected recurrent or residual glioblastoma-A hybrid [F]FET PET/MRI study.

Background: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) cerebral blood volume (CBV) measurements improve the diagnosis of recurrent gliomas. The study investigated the prognostic value of dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) CBV imaging in treated IDH wildtype glioblastoma when added to MRI or amino acid positron emission tomography (PET).

Methods: Hybrid [F]FET PET/MRI with 2CXM (2-compartment exchange model) DCE from 86 adult patients with suspected recurrent or residual glioblastoma were retrospectively analyzed.

Assessment of Dementia in Minority Ethnic Groups in Europe: A 14-Year Follow-Up Survey.

Objectives: There is no European consensus on good clinical practice for timely diagnosis and culturally appropriate care of people with dementia from minority ethnic groups. Despite significant advances in culture-sensitive dementia diagnostics, little is known about how this has been implemented in clinical practice. The aims of this follow-up survey were to explore current practices for assessing dementia in patients from minority ethnic groups in Europe and to determine whether barriers in access to specialized dementia services have changed during the last 14 years.

DNA methylation in cord blood partially mediates the effects of prepregnancy BMI on early childhood offspring BMI.

Objective: We investigated whether prepregnancy BMI (prePregBMI) in women with obesity was associated with differential DNA methylation (DNAm) in cord blood (CB) and whether DNAm may mediate the association of prePregBMI and early childhood BMI z score (BMIz).

Methods: From the Treatment of Obese Pregnant Women (TOP) study, 232 mother-child pairs were included. We conducted an epigenome-wide association study on prePregBMI and CB DNAm (450k array), followed by causal mediation analyses to test whether DNAm may mediate effects of prePregBMI on  BMIz at age 36 months (BMIz36).

The impact of the xSPECT reconstruction algorithms on the recovery coefficients value for small tumors: a phantom study with 177Lu.

Quantifying small tumors is still a challenge due to the partial volume effect (PVE). Although iterative reconstruction had promising results with a better recovery coefficient (RC), it suffers from the PVE. RC values typically depend on the reconstruction method, which may affect on Lu quantifying.

Meningeal KATP channels contribute to behavioral responses in preclinical migraine models.

Human experimental studies have shown that levcromakalim, an ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channel opener, induces migraine attacks in people with migraine but not in healthy volunteers. However, the exact site of action for KATP channels in migraine pathophysiology remains unclear. This study investigates the role of these channels in the meninges in eliciting behavioral hypersensitivity responses in mice.

Magnetic resonance imaging and o-(2-[F]fluoroethyl)-l-tyrosine positron emission tomography for early response assessment of nivolumab and bevacizumab in patients with recurrent high-grade astrocytic glioma.

Background: In the present study, early response assessment by o-(2-[F]fluoroethyl)-l-tyrosine (FET) positron emission tomography (PET) and contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were investigated in a phase II open-label single-center study of nivolumab plus bevacizumab for recurrent high-grade astrocytic glioma.

Methods: Twenty patients with nonresectable first recurrence of high-grade astrocytic glioma after EORTC/NCIC protocol underwent [F]FET PET/MRI at baseline and after 2 cycles of treatment. Whole brain values of contrast-enhancing volume on MRI (CEV), of the mean (TBR) and maximal tumor-to-background ratio (TBR), and of metabolically active volume (MTV) on [F]FET PET were obtained.

Lower versus higher blood pressure targets during intensive care of comatose patients resuscitated from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest - A Bayesian analysis of the BOX trial.

Background: The Blood Pressure and Oxygenation Targets After out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (BOX) trial found no statistically significant differences in mortality or neurological outcomes with mean arterial blood pressure targets of 63 versus 77 mmHg in patients receiving intensive care post-cardiac arrest. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect on 1-year mortality and assess heterogeneity in treatment effects (HTE) using Bayesian statistics.

Methods: We analyzed 1-year all-cause mortality, 1-year neurological outcomes, and plasma neuron-specific enolase (NSE) at 48 hours using Bayesian logistic and linear regressions primarily with weakly informative priors.

Effectiveness of a family-based health promotion intervention for women with prior GDM: The Face-it RCT.

Context: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the risk of future type 2 diabetes (T2DM), but effective and feasible interventions to reduce this risk are lacking.

Background: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a rare secondary headache disorder caused by spinal leakage of cerebrospinal fluid. Specialized treatment of SIH consists of epidural blood patches (EBPs), fibrin patching, endovascular sealing, and surgery. The aim of this paper was to characterize SIH patients identified at a tertiary headache center.

Challenges in developing response evaluation criteria for peptide receptor radionuclide therapy: A consensus report from the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society Advisory Board Meeting 2022 and the ENETS Theranostics Task Force.

Assessing the response to systemic therapy in neuroendocrine tumors (NET) is challenging since morphological imaging response is often delayed and not necessarily reflective of clinical benefit. Peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) has a complex mechanism of action, further complicating response assessment. In response to these challenges, the European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) Theranostics Task Force conducted a statement-based survey among experts to identify the current landscape and unmet needs in PRRT response assessment.

Objectives: To test whether haemochromatosis C282Y homozygotes have increased risk of diabetes, liver disease, and heart disease even when they have normal plasma iron, transferrin saturation, or ferritin concentrations and to test whether C282Y homozygotes with diabetes, liver disease, or heart disease have increased mortality compared with non-carriers with these diseases.

Design: Prospective cohort study.

Setting: Three Danish general population cohorts: the Copenhagen City Heart Study, the Copenhagen General Population Study, and the Danish General Suburban Population Study.

Effects of very early hyperoxemia on neurologic outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: A secondary analysis of the TTM-2 trial.

Purpose: Hyperoxemia is common in patients resuscitated after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and may increase the risk of mortality. However, the effect of hyperoxemia on functional outcome, specifically related to the timing of exposure to hyperoxemia, remains unclear.

10-Year Risk of Gallstones in Congenital Red Blood Cell Disorder Patients: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

Chronic hemolysis potentially elevates the risk of gallstones in several types of congenital red blood cell (RBC) disorders. However, the magnitude of the risk is unknown. We investigate the risk of gallstone disease in congenital RBC disorder patients, compared with general population comparators.

Legal obstacles jeopardise research in personalised medicine - experiences from a Nordic collaboration within rheumatology.

Aims: Personalised medicine in chronic complex diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is within reach but requires international multi-stakeholder collaboration. We exemplify how national implementations of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) have introduced administrative delays and created disincentives for data sharing and collaborative research.

Methods: Our Danish/Swedish/Norwegian research collaboration (the 3-year NordForsk-funded "NORA" project) aims to develop a personalised medicine approach for the management of RA, built on the exploitation of unique existing data sources: longitudinal data from clinical rheumatology registries, research cohorts, nationwide health care registries, and biobank material from >20 sample collections.

The impact of long axial field of view (LAFOV) PET on oncologic imaging.

The development of long axial field of view (LAFOV) positron emission tomography coupled with computed tomography (PET/CT) scanners might be considered the biggest step forward in PET imaging since it became a mainstream clinical modality. Despite increased capital and maintenance costs and data storage requirements, the improvement in image quality, significantly faster acquisition times and lower radiopharmaceutical administered activities, allow a high quality and more efficient clinical service. This step change in technology overcomes some of the limitations of standard short axial field of view scanners.

Disease-modifying treatment and disability progression in subclasses of patients with primary progressive MS: results from the Big MS Data Network.

Background: Effectiveness of disease-modifying treatment (DMT) in people affected by primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) is limited. Whether specific subgroups may benefit more from DMT in a real-world setting remains unclear. Our aim was to investigate the potential effect of DMT on disability worsening among patients with PPMS stratified by different disability trajectories.

Soluble luteinizing hormone receptor in follicular fluid and the association with reproductive function during IVF and ICSI.

The need for assisted reproductive technology (ART) has increased worldwide, leaving a negative impact on both physical and emotional health of the individual as well as on society depending on child births, thus biomarkers that can increase the success of ART are warranted. The luteinizing hormone/choriogonadotropin receptor (LHCGR) is released into blood and follicular fluid, and the level of soluble LHCGR (sLHCGR) in serum has previously been suggested to predict chances of pregnancy and live birth rate after ART. We aimed to investigate whether sLHCGR originates from the ovary and if serum or follicular fluid sLHCGR can predict the likelihood of pregnancy or live birth.

Artificial intelligence-aided data mining of medical records for cancer detection and screening.

The application of artificial intelligence methods to electronic patient records paves the way for large-scale analysis of multimodal data. Such population-wide data describing deep phenotypes composed of thousands of features are now being leveraged to create data-driven algorithms, which in turn has led to improved methods for early cancer detection and screening. Remaining challenges include establishment of infrastructures for prospective testing of such methods, ways to assess biases given the data, and gathering of sufficiently large and diverse datasets that reflect disease heterogeneities across populations.
