Background: Treatment with implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) effectively prevents sudden cardiac death (SCD) in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Identifying patients most likely to benefit from a primary prevention ICD remains challenging. We aimed to investigate the long-term incidence of ICD therapy in patients with HCM according to SCD-risk at baseline.

Persisting deficits are often seen years after an Achilles tendon rupture despite dedicated rehabilitation efforts. A possible reason for reduced function is elongation of the tendon and accompanying shortening of the muscle. Strength training with focus on the eccentric component of loading leads to longer muscle fascicles in healthy persons.

Pantothenate kinase 4 controls skeletal muscle substrate metabolism.

Nat Commun

January 2025

Department of Molecular Physiology of Exercise and Nutrition, German Institute of Human Nutrition (DIfE), Potsdam-Rehbruecke, Nuthetal, Germany.

Article Synopsis
  • Metabolic flexibility in skeletal muscle is crucial for healthy glucose and lipid metabolism, and its dysfunction can lead to metabolic diseases.
  • Exercise improves metabolic flexibility and helps identify mechanisms that support metabolic health.
  • The study reveals that pantothenate kinase 4 (PanK4) is vital for muscle metabolism, as its deletion disrupts fatty acid oxidation and elevates harmful acetyl-CoA levels, which lead to glucose intolerance, while increasing PanK4 enhances glucose uptake and lowers acetyl-CoA.

Aims: Dislocation is a major concern following total hip arthroplasty (THA) for osteoarthritis (OA). Both dual-mobility components and standard acetabular components with large femoral heads are used to reduce the risk of dislocation. We investigated whether dual-mobility components are superior to standard components in reducing the two-year dislocation and revision risk in a propensity-matched sample from the Danish Hip Arthroplasty Register (DHR).

Hidradenitis suppurativa pathogenesis: Extrinsic factors.

J Am Acad Dermatol

December 2024

Department of Dermatology, University of California, San Francisco, San Francisco, California. Electronic address:

While genetic predisposition and immune dysregulation are recognized as key contributors to the development of hidradenitis suppurativa, accumulating research points to the influence of extrinsic factors in the pathogenesis of this condition. This review explores the roles of mechanical stress, altered skin and gut microbiome, tobacco smoking, diet, and paradoxical drug reactions as drivers of hidradenitis suppurativa onset and progression. A holistic management approach addressing these factors may be encouraged to improve disease outcomes.

Stroke frequently leads to hospital admission and subsequent rehabilitation in order to overcome poststroke sequelae, such as motor impairments. Efficient planning of the steps following hospital admission includes early prediction of whether the patient can be discharged home or not. Early assessment of motor performance in patients with stroke-induced motor deficits may be able to function as a predictor of discharge destination but is less explored.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis hyperactivity measured by the combined dexamethasone-CRH test (DEX-CRH test) has been found in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), whereas hypoactivity has been found in patients with work-related stress. We aimed to investigate the DEX-CRH test as a biomarker to distinguish between MDD and work-related stress (exhaustion disorder - ED). We hypothesized that there would be lower cortisol and ACTH response in participants with ED compared to MDD and healthy controls (HC).

Exercise for knee osteoarthritis pain: Association or causation?

Osteoarthritis Cartilage

June 2024

Clinical Epidemiology Unit, Orthopedics, Clinical Sciences Lund, Lund University, Lund, Sweden.

Exercise is universally recommended as a primary strategy for the management of knee osteoarthritis (OA) pain. The recommendations are based on results from more than 100 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that compare exercise to no-attention control groups. However, due to the inherent difficulties with adequate placebo control, participant blinding and the use of patient-reported outcomes, the existing RCT evidence is imperfect.

Excessive oxidative stress-generated nucleoside damage seems to play a key role in bipolar disorder (BD) and may present a trait phenomenon associated with familial risk and is one of the putative mechanisms explaining accelerated atherosclerosis and premature cardiovascular diseases (CVD) in younger patients with BD. However, oxidative stress-generated nucleoside damage has not been studied in young BD patients and their unaffected relatives (UR). Therefore, we compared oxidative stress-generated damage to DNA and RNA in young patients newly diagnosed with BD, UR, and healthy control individuals (HC).
