Recent data indicated a high incidence of inappropriate management of neuromuscular block, with a high rate of residual paralysis and relaxant-associated postoperative complications. These data are alarming in that the available neuromuscular monitoring, as well as myorelaxants and their antagonists basically allow well tolerated management of neuromuscular blockade. In this first European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) guideline on peri-operative management of neuromuscular block, we aim to present aggregated and evidence-based recommendations to assist clinicians provide best medical care and ensure patient safety.

Background And Objectives: Declines in stroke admission, IV thrombolysis (IVT), and mechanical thrombectomy volumes were reported during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a paucity of data on the longer-term effect of the pandemic on stroke volumes over the course of a year and through the second wave of the pandemic. We sought to measure the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the volumes of stroke admissions, intracranial hemorrhage (ICH), IVT, and mechanical thrombectomy over a 1-year period at the onset of the pandemic (March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2021) compared with the immediately preceding year (March 1, 2019, to February 29, 2020).

The West Africa ICEMR Partnerships for Guiding Policy to Improve the Malaria Prevention and Control.

Am J Trop Med Hyg

October 2022

U.S. President's Malaria Initiative, United States Agency for International Development Office, Bamako, Mali.

The Mali National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) recently established a phased set of goals for eliminating malaria in Mali by 2030. Over the past decade, the scale-up of NMCP-led malaria control interventions has led to considerable progress, as evidenced by multiple malariometric indicators. The West Africa International Center of Excellence in Malaria Research (WA-ICEMR) is a multidisciplinary research program that works closely with the NMCP and its partners to address critical research needs for malaria control.

Article Synopsis
  • Common SNPs may account for 40-50% of human height variation, and this study identifies 12,111 SNPs linked to height from a large sample of 5.4 million individuals.
  • These SNPs cluster in 7,209 genomic segments, encompassing about 21% of the genome and showing varying densities enriched in relevant genes.
  • While these SNPs explain a substantial portion of height variance in European populations (40-45%), their predictive power is lower (10-24%) in other ancestries, suggesting a need for more research to enhance understanding in diverse populations.

Purpose: Endotheliopathy of trauma (EoT), as defined by circulating levels of syndecan-1 ≥ 40 ng/mL, has been reported to be associated with significantly increased transfusion requirements and a doubled 30-day mortality. Increased shedding of the glycocalyx points toward the endothelial cell membrane composition as important for the clinical outcome being the rationale for this study.

Results: The plasma metabolome of 95 severely injured trauma patients was investigated by mass spectrometry, and patients with EoT vs.

BACKGROUND: GLOW is a phase 3 trial evaluating the efficacy and safety of ibrutinib-venetoclax in older patients and/or those with comorbidities with previously untreated chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). METHODS: We randomly assigned (1:1) patients 65 years of age or older or those 18 to 64 years of age who also had a Cumulative Illness Rating Scale (CIRS) score greater than 6 (CIRS scores range from 0 to 56, with higher scores indicating more impaired function of organ systems) or creatinine clearance of less than 70 ml/min, to ibrutinib-venetoclax (3 cycles ibrutinib lead-in, then 12 cycles ibrutinib-venetoclax) or chlorambucil-obinutuzumab (6 cycles). The primary end point was progression-free survival (PFS) assessed by an independent review committee.

Background: β3-AR (β3-adrenergic receptor) stimulation improved systolic function in a sheep model of systolic heart failure (heart failure with reduced ejection fraction [HFrEF]). Exploratory findings in patients with New York Heart Association functional class II HFrEF treated with the β3-AR-agonist mirabegron supported this observation. Here, we measured the hemodynamic response to mirabegron in patients with severe HFrEF.

Prevalence of Left Ventricular Noncompaction in Newborns.

Circ Cardiovasc Imaging

June 2022

Department of Cardiology, Copenhagen University Hospital Herlev-Gentofte, Denmark (M.F.B., E.B.-M., T.O.K., A.-S.S., R.O.B.V., C.A.P., J.B.N., A.H.C., K.K.I., A.A.R.).

Background: Left ventricular noncompaction (LVNC) is characterized by excessive trabeculations of the LV and may be associated with reduced systolic function or severe adverse outcomes. Several aspects remain to be elucidated; there is controversy to whether LVNC cardiomyopathy is a distinct cardiomyopathy caused by failure of the spongy fetal myocardium to condense during fetal development or acquired later in life as a morphological trait associated with other types of cardiomyopathy; the prevalence in unselected populations is unknown and the distinction between normal variation and pathology remains to be defined. In this study, we aimed to determine the prevalence of LVNC and the association to LV systolic function in a large, population-based cohort of neonates.

Aims: Sacubitril/valsartan is a neprilysin-inhibitor/angiotensin II receptor blocker used for the treatment of heart failure. Recently, a post-hoc analysis of a 3-year randomized controlled trial showed improved glycaemic control with sacubitril/valsartan in patients with heart failure and type 2 diabetes. We previously reported that sacubitril/valsartan combined with a dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor increases active glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) in healthy individuals.

Background: Over the past decade, antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens that include integrase strand inhibitors (INSTIs) have become the most commonly used for people with HIV starting ART. Although trials and observational studies have compared virological failure on INSTI-based with other regimens, few data are available on mortality in people with HIV treated with INSTIs in routine care. Therefore, we compared all-cause mortality between different INSTI-based and non-INSTI-based regimens in adults with HIV starting ART from 2013 to 2018.
