Article Synopsis
  • * Studies show that a genetically determined increase in lipoprotein(a) by 50 mg/dl raises the risk for PAD and AAA, with hazard ratios indicating significantly higher risks for individuals in the top percentile of lipoprotein(a) levels compared to those in the lower percentile.
  • * The review emphasizes the importance of providing clinicians with risk prediction tools and suggests that reducing lipoprotein(a) through future therapies could lessen the negative health

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most challenging tumor sites to treat safely and effectively with radiotherapy due to the anatomical location and aggressiveness of the disease. One modality that has shown promising results, which our institution has been employing, is online adaptive stereotactic radiotherapy using a magnetic resonance-guided linear accelerator (MR-linac). However, due to unforeseen circumstances regarding our MR-linac, it was necessary for our institution to use an alternative treatment technique.

  • Socioeconomic status (SES) impacts heart failure prognosis and access to advanced evaluation, with lower SES often linked to worse outcomes.
  • A study analyzed data from 631 heart failure patients to assess the relationship between SES factors (like income and education) and invasive haemodynamics.
  • Results showed higher household income correlated with lower pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, but notable differences in cardiac index and pulmonary vascular resistance between the most and least deprived groups were observed, suggesting complex interactions between SES and heart function.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the short-term complication rate after US-guided core needle biopsies with an 18-gauge needle of retroperitoneal or intraabdominal masses (non-kidney group) compared with complications after biopsy from a renal mass (kidney group).

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of 330 consecutive patients in the non-kidney group and 330 control patients in the kidney group. We recorded baseline characteristics, diagnostic yield, complications graded as Clavien-Dindo (CD) and readmissions within one and seven days.

The PRecIsion MEdicine based on kidney TIssue Molecular interrogation in diabetic nEphropathy (PRIMETIME) 1 cohort is designed to study clinical characteristics, diagnostic accuracy and prognostic markers in a population with diabetes and kidney disease classified by biopsy.

Participants: This retrospective Danish nationwide cohort includes 2586 individuals with diabetes who have undergone a kidney biopsy between the 1980s and 2022.

Time of day for vaccination, outcomes, and relative effectiveness of high-dose vs. standard-dose quadrivalent influenza vaccine: A post hoc analysis of the DANFLU-1 randomized clinical trial.

J Infect

November 2024

Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to examine how the timing of influenza vaccinations (morning vs. later in the day) affects the immune response and overall health outcomes, particularly in a large trial comparing high-dose and standard-dose influenza vaccines.
  • - Researchers analyzed data from 12,477 participants and found that earlier vaccinations were linked to fewer hospitalizations for respiratory issues, regardless of the vaccine dosage, with statistically significant results.
  • - Although both high-dose and standard-dose vaccines showed similar effectiveness regardless of vaccination timing, the findings suggest that getting vaccinated earlier in the day could still be beneficial, warranting further investigation.

  • Psoriasis is often linked with various health issues, including higher rates of obesity, which affects treatment choices and responses for affected individuals.
  • This study aimed to examine differences in patient characteristics among those starting or continuing biologic therapies for psoriasis and to assess the use of topical treatments after one year of therapy.
  • Findings revealed that younger patients with fewer instances of psoriatic arthritis were treated with ustekinumab, while most other patient factors remained consistent across different biologic treatments, indicating a need for more tailored treatment approaches.

One in five people are at high risk for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and aortic valve stenosis due to high lipoprotein(a). Lipoprotein(a) concentrations are lowest in people from east Asia, Europe, and southeast Asia, intermediate in people from south Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, and highest in people from Africa. Concentrations are more than 90% genetically determined and 17% higher in post-menopausal women than in men.

Article Synopsis
  • Left atrial (LA) strain assessed by three-dimensional echocardiography (3DE) offers a more precise way to gauge LA function compared to traditional two-dimensional methods, which can be important for predicting health risks.
  • A study with 4,466 participants, of which 1,935 had their LA strain analyzed, found that over a median follow-up of 4.8 years, 3% developed atrial fibrillation (AF), and significant associations were made between certain strain measures and the onset of AF.
  • Specifically, LA reservoir strain (LASr) and contractile strain (LASct) were linked to increased AF risk, providing valuable prognostic information that goes beyond existing clinical risk assessment tools.

The diagnostic accuracy of handheld ultrasound (HHUS) devices operated by newly certified operators for pneumonia is unknown. This multicenter diagnostic accuracy study included patients prospectively suspected of pneumonia from February 2021 to February 2022 in four emergency departments. The index test was a 14-zone focused lung ultrasound (FLUS) examination, with consolidation with air bronchograms as diagnostic criteria for pneumonia.

Background: Cardiac troponin (cTn) is key in diagnosing myocardial infarction (MI). After MI, the clinically observed half-life of cTn has been reported to be 7 to 20 hours, but this estimate reflects the combined elimination and simultaneous release of cTn from cardiomyocytes. More precise timing of myocardial injuries necessitates separation of these 2 components.
