Med Hypotheses

September 2020

Dept. Neurosurgery, XinHua Hospital, Shanghai JiaoTong University School of Medicine, 1665 KongJiang Rd., Shanghai 200092, China. Electronic address:

The cranial nerve rhizophathy, commonly presented with trigeminal neuralgia (TN) or hemifacial spasm (HFS), is a sort of hyperexcitability disorders with higher incidence in senior Asian. In this paper, a novel hypothesis on the pathogenesis is proposed and with which some clinical phenomena are explained. In those with crowded cerebellopontine angle in anatomy, the cranial nerve root and surrounding vessel are getting closer and closer to each other with aging and finally the neurovascular conflict happens.

Cellular, Molecular, and Immunological Characteristics of Langhans Multinucleated Giant Cells Programmed by IL-15.

J Invest Dermatol

September 2020

Department of Medicine, Division of Dermatology, David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California (UCLA), Los Angeles, California, USA; Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics, David Geffen School of Medicine at University of California (UCLA), Los Angeles, California, USA. Electronic address:

Langhans multinucleated giant cells (LGCs) are a specific type of multinucleated giant cell containing a characteristic horseshoe-shaped ring of nuclei that are present within granulomas of infectious etiology. Although cytokines that trigger macrophage activation (such as IFN-γ) induce LGC formation, it is not clear whether cytokines that trigger macrophage differentiation contribute to LGC formation. Here, we found that IL-15, a cytokine that induces M1 macrophage differentiation, programs human peripheral blood adherent cells to form LGCs.

Article Synopsis
  • Concerns about mineral oils focus on their potential health risks, particularly in food, cosmetics, and other consumer products, highlighting two main types: saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH).
  • This paper evaluates the bioaccumulation and histopathological effects of MOSH, along with the carcinogenic potential of MOAH, while also discussing how these substances are absorbed, distributed, metabolized, and excreted in the body.
  • Evidence suggests that highly refined mineral oils have a low risk for causing liver issues or cancer, supported by long-term safe usage in various products and a lack of significant clinical evidence of harm.

Granulomatous amoebic encephalitis caused by free-living amoebae is a rare condition that is difficult to diagnose and hard to treat, generally being fatal. Anti-amoebic treatment is often delayed because clinical signs and symptoms may hide the probable causing agent misleading the appropriate diagnostic test. There are four genera of free-living amoeba associated with human infection, Naegleria, Acanthamoeba sp.

Key issues around the evaluation of risks to humans from mineral oils in food and feedstuffs are discussed. MOHs (MOAH and MOSH) occur in food due to intentional use, contamination from environmental sources and during transport/processing, or through migration from food contact materials. Problems in setting and enforcing human health guidelines for MOH include uncertainty around MOH toxicity and the specialist expertise needed for analysis of complex food matrices.
