Purpose: To describe the surgical management of presumed trematode-induced granulomatous intermediate uveitis (PTIGIU) not responding to medical treatment in controlling the inflammation.

Methods: A prospective, interventional, single-center study in which patients with a history of fresh canal water contact and PTIGIU were enrolled. All patients underwent lensectomy-pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) and post-operative control of inflammation, functional and anatomical outcomes were assessed.

Mechanisms keeping leukocytes distant of local inflammatory processes in a resting state despite systemic release of inflammatory triggers are a pivotal requirement for avoidance of overwhelming inflammation but are ill defined. Dimers of the alarmin S100A8/S100A9 activate Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) but extracellular calcium concentrations induce S100A8/S100A9-tetramers preventing TLR4-binding and limiting their inflammatory activity. So far, only antimicrobial functions of released S100A8/S100A9-tetramers (calprotectin) are described.

Article Synopsis
  • * An immunohistochemical study identified higher levels of vimentin compared to α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) across all three conditions, with specific expressions of other markers like CD31, CD34, and p16 differing by disease type.
  • * Vimentin emerges as a key marker for the fibrotic process in these diseases, while TGF-β is predominantly present in keloids and lacaziosis, suggesting potential pathways for targeted interventions.

Mycobacterium marinum: A brief update for clinical purposes.

Eur J Intern Med

November 2022

StopTB Italia Onlus, Milan, Italy; Department of Medical, Surgical and Experimental Sciences, University of Sassari, Sassari, Italy. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Mycobacterium marinum (M. marinum) is a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium related to tuberculosis, primarily affecting fish and causing skin infections in humans, especially in those with weakened immune systems.
  • The first human cases appeared in 1951 from swimmers with skin lesions after contact with contaminated water, requiring both skin damage and exposure to infected environments for infection to occur.
  • The most common infection, known as "fish-tank granuloma", presents as a specific skin lesion, and diagnosis involves thorough patient history and microbiological cultures, while treatment consists of a combination of antimycobacterial drugs, tailored to susceptibility testing.

Objective: To establish a consensus on terminology used to define stomal, parastomal, and peristomal complications in Australia.

Methods: A list of stomal, parastomal, and peristomal complications was generated through group dialogue, which was informed by clinical and academic knowledge of the researchers. An extensive literature review was undertaken to identify any additional terms and to create a database of definitions/descriptions.

CD4+ T cells drive the immunopathogenesis of chronic beryllium disease (CBD), and their recruitment to the lung heralds the onset of granulomatous inflammation. We have shown that CD4+ Tregs control granuloma formation in an HLA-DP2 Tg model of CBD. In these mice, beryllium oxide (BeO) exposure resulted in the accumulation of 3 distinct CD4+ T cell subsets in the lung, with the majority of tissue-resident memory cells expressing FoxP3.

Background: Aluminium-adsorbed vaccines may in some children cause severely itching nodules at the injection site, known as vaccination granulomas.

Objective: To investigate vaccine-, child- and maternal-level risk factors for the development of vaccination granulomas following immunization with aluminium-adsorbed vaccines.

Methods: A Danish population-based cohort study with 553 932 children born in Denmark from 1 January 2009 to 31 December 2018, vaccinated with an aluminium-adsorbed vaccine during the first year of life, followed until 31 December 2020.

Background: Vaccines adsorbed to aluminium can induce long-lasting intensely itching subcutaneous nodules (granulomas) at the injection site as well as contact allergy to aluminium. In clinical trials of a new acellular pertussis vaccine performed in the 1990s (Gothenburg, Sweden) with 76 000 participants, itching nodules were reported in 745 children. A positive patch test to aluminium was verified in 77% of the tested children with itchy nodules.

Platelets regulate human inflammatory responses that lead to disease. However, the role of platelets in tuberculosis (TB) pathogenesis is still unclear. Here, we show that patients with active TB have a high number of platelets in peripheral blood and a low number of lymphocytes leading to a high platelets to lymphocytes ratio (PL ratio).

J Voice

March 2024

Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, Changsha, Hunan, China; Otolaryngology Major Disease Research Key Laboratory of Hunan Province, Changsha, Hunan, China. Electronic address:

Objective: Laryngeal contact granuloma (LCG) is a relatively uncommon disease with chronic inflammatory stimulation, and long-term reflux irritation is a vital factor for arytenoid cartilage calcification. Our investigation compared the severity of ipsilateral arytenoid cartilage calcification with the frequency of recurrence of LCG after surgical treatment.

Methods: A retrospective chart review of prospectively gathered data over five years from 327 patients, including 153 subjects without laryngeal lesions, were age- and sex-matched normal controls, 103 patients with various other vocal cord lesions were in the laryngeal lesion group and 71 LCG patients met the diagnostic criteria pathologically.
