Intrinsic biocide efficacy of eumelanins can be markedly enhanced through a templated formation in the presence of a TiO-sol, leading to hybrid TiO-melanin nanostructures. However, mechanisms and processes behind biocide activity still remain poorly understood. This paper discloses the fundamental mechanism of action of these systems providing mechanistic information on their peculiar interaction with strains.

This study investigated occurrence of microplastic particles in digestive tracts of fishes from the Amazon River estuary. A total of 189 fish specimens representing 46 species from 22 families was sampled from bycatch of the shrimp fishery. Microplastic particles removed from fish gastrointestinal tracts were identified using Attenuated Total Reflectance - Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR).

Background: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) in biological tissues of elected biosentinels represent an optimal biomarker for eco-monitoring of polluted areas. Electron spin resonance (ESR) is the most definitive method for detecting, quantifying and possibly identifying radicals in complex systems.
Objective: A non-invasive method for monitoring polluted areas by the quantitative determination of ROS in frog skin biopsy is presented.

Recently, mixed duplex/quadruplex oligonucleotides have attracted great interest for use as biomedical aptamers. In the case of anti-thrombin aptamers, the addition of duplex-forming sequences to a G-quadruplex module identical or very similar to the best-known G-quadruplex of the Thrombin Binding Aptamer (HD1) results in new or improved biological properties, such as higher activity or different recognition properties with respect to HD1. An amphiphilic derivative of guanosine, carrying a myristoyl group at the 5'-position and two methoxy(triethylene glycol) appendages at the 2' and 3'-positions (1), endowed with high ionophoric activity, has been here studied in its interaction mode with a model lipid membrane along with its 5'-spin-labelled analogue 2, bearing the 5-doxyl-stearic in lieu of the myristic residue. Electron spin resonance spectra, carried out on the spin-labelled nucleolipid 2 in mixture with a DOPC/DOPG phospholipid bilayer, on one side, and on spin-labelled lipids mixed with 1, on the other, integrated with dynamic light scattering and neutron reflectivity measurements, allowed getting an in-depth picture of the effect of the ionophores on membrane structure, relevant to clarify the ion transport mechanism through lipid bilayers. Particularly, dehydration of lipid headgroups and lowering of both the local polarity and acyl chains order across the bilayer, due to the insertion of the oligo(ethylene glycol) chains in the bilayer hydrophobic core, have been found to be the main effects of the amphiphilic guanosines interaction with the membrane.

Progress in understanding and treatment of thrombotic diseases requires new effective methods for the easy, rapid, and reversible control of coagulation processes. In this framework, the use of aptamers, and particularly of the thrombin binding aptamer (TBA), has aroused strong interest, due to its enormous therapeutic potential, associated with a large number of possible applications in biotechnological and bioanalytical fields. Here, we describe a new TBA analogue (named tris-mTBA), carrying three different pendant groups: a dansyl residue at the 3'- and a β-cyclodextrin moiety at the 5'-end-providing a host-guest system which exhibits a marked fluorescence enhancement upon TBA G-quadruplex folding-and a biotin tag, allowing the attachment of the aptamer onto biocompatible streptavidin-coated silica nanoparticles (NPs) of 50 nm hydrodynamic diameter (Sicastar).

Using nuclear magnetic resonance we study the dynamics of the hydrogen bond (HB) sub-domains in bulk and emulsified water across a wide temperature range that includes the supercooled regime. We measure the proton spin-lattice T and spin-spin T relaxation times to understand the hydrophilic interactions that determine the properties of water. We use (i) the Bloembergen, Purcell, and Pound approach that focuses on a single characteristic correlation time τ, and (ii) the Powles and Hubbard approach that measures the proton rotational time τ.

Eco-friendly hybrid Eumelanin-TiO nanostructures, recently obtained through in situ methodology based on hydrothermal route, have shown a striking antimicrobial activity, after exposure to oxidative environment, even under visible light induction condition. This is the first survey to investigate the occurrence and extent of microplastic (MPs) contamination in sub surface waters collected near-shore and off-shore the coastal area of the Ross Sea (Antarctica). Moreover, a non-invasive method to analyze MPs, consisting in filtration after water sampling and analysis of the dried filter through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) 2D Imaging, using an FPA detector, was proposed. The non-invasiveness of analytical set-up reduces potential bias and allows subsequent analysis of the filter sample for determination of other classes of contaminants.

The effect of the 665-683 fragment of the HIV fusion glycoprotein 41, corresponding to the MPER domain of the protein and named gp41MPER, on the microscopic structure and mesoscopic arrangement of palmitoyl oleoyl phosphatidylcholine (POPC) and POPC/sphingomyelin (SM)/cholesterol (CHOL) lipid bilayers is analyzed. Nanostructured hydrogels composed by biocompatible molecules are formulated and characterized. They are based on a polymer network formed by hydrophobically modified chitosans (HMCHIT or CnCHIT) in which vesicles of monoolein (MO) and oleic acid or sodium oleate (NaO), depending on pH, are embedded. The best conditions for gel formation, in terms of pH, length of the hydrophobic moieties of chitosan, and weight proportion among the three components were estimated by visual inspection of a large number of samples.

The kinetics of the p-nitrophenyl butyrate hydrolysis reaction, catalyzed by Candida rugosa lipase in the water-in-oil microemulsion cetyltrimethylammonium bromide/water/pentanol/hexane, was investigated. The results described in the present manuscript reveal two peculiar characteristics of the reaction: (i) the initial rate of hydrolysis is very fast and (ii) by decreasing the water content of the microemulsion, the reaction rate approaches the typical behavior of reactions performed in aqueous solution. In particular, for microemulsion systems with a high water content, the end points of the reactions are dictated by the shape stability of the microemulsion.

In this work, the interaction of nucleotide-monophosphates (NMPs) with unilamellar liposomes made of 1,2-Dioleoyl-3-Trimethylammonium-Propane (DOTAP) and 1,2-Dioleoyl-sn-Glycero-3-Phosphoethanolamine (DOPE) was investigated. Here, we demonstrate how adsorption is affected by the type of nucleotide-monophosphate. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) results revealed, for each NMP, that a distinguishable concentration exists at which a significant growth of the aggregates occurs.

Mutual diffusion coefficients have been measured for several average compositions of the system sodium cholate-sodium deoxycholate-water at 25 °C. The experiments have been grouped in different sets having constant concentration of one component and variable concentration of the other one. Following this approach, it has been found that the trends of the main- and cross-term diffusion coefficients can be interpreted on the basis of the diffusion and equilibrium results of similar experiments performed on the two binary systems sodium cholate-water and sodium deoxycholate-water.

Sodium cholate (NaC) and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) in binary and ternary aqueous mixtures were investigated by means of surface tension, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR), small angle neutron scattering (SANS) and mutual diffusion coefficient analysis. Concerning the NaC-H(2)O and NaDC-H(2)O binary mixtures, the surface tension, EPR and diffusion measurements confirmed the formation of micelles above a well detectable critical concentration. The SANS data indicated for both systems, the formation of ellipsoidal micelles whose major axis increased with concentration and minor axis remained constant.

In deep lakes, water column stratification isolates the surface water from the deeper bottom layers, creating a three dimensional differentiation of the chemical, physical, biological and optical characteristics of the waters. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and total suspended solids (TSS) play an important role in the attenuation of ultraviolet and photosynthetically active radiation. In the present analysis of spectral irradiance, we show that the wavelength composition of the metalimnetic visible irradiance was influenced by epilimnetic spatial distribution of CDOM.
