Hypothesis: Particle surface chemistry and internal softness are two fundamental parameters in governing the mechanical properties of dense colloidal suspensions, dictating structure and flow, therefore of interest from materials fabrication to processing.
Experiments: Here, we modulate softness by tuning the crosslinker content of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels, and we adjust their surface properties by co-polymerization with polyethylene glycol chains, controlling adhesion, friction and fuzziness. We investigate the distinct effects of these parameters on the entire mechanical response from restructuring to complete fluidization of jammed samples at varying packing fractions under large-amplitude oscillatory shear experiments, and we complement rheological data with colloidal-probe atomic force microscopy to unravel variations in the particles' surface properties.

Hypothesis: The complexation of microgels with rigid nanoparticles is an effective way to impart novel properties and functions to the resulting hybrid particles for applications such as in optics, catalysis, or for the stabilization of foams/emulsions. The nanoparticles affect the conformation of the polymer network, both in bulk aqueous environments and when the microgels are adsorbed at a fluid interface, in a non-trivial manner by modulating the microgel size, stiffness and apparent contact angle.
Experiments: Here, we provide a detailed investigation, using light scattering, in-situ atomic force microscopy and nano-indentation experiments, of the interaction between poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) microgels and hydrophobized silica nanoparticles after mixing in aqueous suspension to shed light on the network reorganization upon nanoparticle incorporation.

Among these, pH sensing via luminescence lifetime measurements of surface-functionalized carbon dots is one application currently investigated for their long lifetime and autonomous operation. The clinical translation of photosensitizers based on ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes (RPCs) in photodynamic therapy of cancer faces several challenges. To address these limitations, we conducted an investigation to assess the potential of a cubosome formulation stabilized in water against coalescence utilizing a polyphosphoester analog of Pluronic F127 as a stabilizer and loaded with newly synthesized RPC-based photosensitizer [Ru(dppn)(bpy-morph)](PF) (bpy-morph = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-diylbis(morpholinomethanone)), PS-Ru. The photophysical characterization of PS-Ru revealed its robust capacity to induce the formation of singlet oxygen (O).

Scientific and industrial reasons dictate the study of the solid state of imepitoin, a highly safe and tolerable anticonvulsant drug used in the therapy of epileptic dogs that was approved in the Europe Union in 2013. Our investigations allowed us to discover the existence of a new polymorph of imepitoin, which finds itself in a monotropic relationship with the crystalline form (polymorph I) already known and present on the market. This form (polymorph II), obtained by crystallization from xylene, remains metastable under ambient conditions for at least 1 year.

The study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of Meloxicam-halloysite nanotube (HNT) composites as a viable approach to enhance the solubility and dissolution rate of meloxicam, a poorly water-soluble drug (BCS class II). Meloxicam is loaded on commercial and modified halloysite (acidic and alkaline etching, or APTES and chitosan functionalization) via a solution method. The widely overlapping physicochemical properties of lipoproteins (LPs) and extracellular vesicles (EVs) represents one of the main obstacles for the isolation and characterization of these pervasive biogenic lipid nanoparticles. We herein present the application of an atomic force microscopy (AFM)-based quantitative morphometry assay to the rapid nanomechanical screening of mixed LPs and EVs samples. Photoacoustics (PA) is gaining increasing credit among biomolecular imaging methodologies by virtue of its poor invasiveness, deep penetration, high spatial resolution, and excellent endogenous contrast, without the use of any ionizing radiation. Recently, we disclosed the excellent PA response of a self-structured biocompatible nanoprobe, consisting of ternary hybrid nanoparticles with a silver core and a melanin component embedded into a silica matrix. ZnS-graphene composites (ZnSGO) were synthesized by a hydrothermal process and loaded onto carbon nanofibers (CNFs) by electrospinning (ZnS-GO/CNF), to obtain self-standing anodes for SIBs. The characterization techniques (XRPD, SEM, TEM, EDS, TGA, and Raman spectroscopy) confirm that the ZnS nanocrystals (10 nm) with sphalerite structure covered by the graphene sheets were successfully synthesized. In the ZnS-GO/CNF anodes, the active material is homogeneously dispersed in the CNFs' matrix and the ordered carbon source mainly resides in the graphene component.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are resistant to breakdown and are now considered ubiquitous and concerning contaminants. Although scientific and legislative interest in these compounds has greatly increased in recent decades, our knowledge about their environmental fate and their effects on organisms is still incomplete, especially those of the new generation PFAS. In this study, we analysed the level of PFAS contamination in the fish fauna of the Po River, the most important waterway in Italy, to evaluate the influence of different factors (such as fish ecological traits and parasitism) on the accumulation of 17 PFAS.
