Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased global interest in ventilators, highlighting a need for more evidence on their performance to ensure proper device-patient matching.
  • A study evaluated six noninvasive ventilators based on various factors including volume delivery, trigger response, and synchronization under 36 different experimental conditions using a lung model.
  • Results indicated that while all ventilators performed well, Philips Trilogy Evo/EV300 and Hamilton C3 were the top performers; however, challenges remained with low muscle effort and obstructive patterns, emphasizing the need for clinicians to understand NIV goals for optimal device selection.

Introduction: The impact of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) on gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has not been widely quantified, and the data in the literature remain controversial.

Materials And Methods: Candidates for LSG underwent barium swallow, esophageal manometry, ambulatory 24-h esophageal pH monitoring (APM), and gastric emptying scintigraphy before and after surgery (1 and 18 months). Symptoms were evaluated using a gastroesophageal reflux disease questionnaire (GERDq).

Introduction: The correct choice of surgical approaches in complex tibial plateau fractures is essential to achieve adequate reduction and fixation. Detailed fracture morphology and direction of columns displacement, that we have named the Main Deformity Direction (MDD), may aid in selecting the optimal surgical strategy. In this article we present a new algorithm based on MDD and column concepts.

Background: The long-term efficacy of corticosteroids to prevent atopic dermatitis (AD) relapses has partially been addressed in children. This study compared an intermittent dosing regimen of fluticasone propionate (FP) cream 0.05% with its vehicle base in reducing the risk of relapse in children with stabilized AD.

We present a case of spontaneous haemorrhage of a thyroid nodule with diffusion of the haematoma to cervical spaces and mediastinum, which began as a progressive cervical mass affecting the airway and which required surgical treatment for control. The diagnosis was made using ultrasonography and cervicothoracic CT scan, giving high quality images to determine the site of bleeding as well as the extent of the process.
