Their training has not only taught them protein structure and folding, but also chemistry. Luciferases catalyze light-emitting reactions that produce a rainbow of colors from their substrates (luciferins), molecular oxygen, and often additional cofactors. These bioluminescence (BL) systems have afforded an incredible variety of basic research and medical applications. The β-lactam antibiotic ceftriaxone (CTX) is a glutamate transporter subtype 1 (GLT-1) enhancer that reduces cocaine reinforcing efficacy and relapse in rats, but pharmacokinetic liabilities limit translational utility. An attractive alternative is clavulanic acid (CLAV), a structurally related β-lactamase inhibitor and component of FDA-approved Augmentin. CLAV retains the GLT-1 enhancing effects of CTX but displays greater oral bioavailability, brain penetrability and negligible antibacterial activity.

Rotosphaerids are unicellular, heterotrophic, eukayotic protists that have filopodia, an exterior covering consisting of highly ornamented siliceous scales, and are classified in the Rotosphaerida within the opistokont lineage. Given their appearance as relatively large spherical cells with protruding filopodia and a silica scale covering, they are often mistaken for centrohelid heliozoans. Even though these organisms are widely distributed in both marine and freshwater environments, many species are rarely reported, and none have been reported from the fossil record.

Attentional capture occurs when salient but task-irrelevant information disrupts our ability to respond to task-relevant information. Although attentional capture costs have been found to decrease between childhood and adulthood, it is currently unclear the extent to which such age-related changes reflect an improved ability to recover from attentional capture or to avoid attentional capture. In addition, recent research using hand-tracking techniques with adults indicates that attentional capture by a distractor can generate response activations corresponding to the distractor's location, consistent with action-centered models of attention.

To investigate the efficacy of mobile health (mHealth) intervention strategies that delivered either personalized, culturally, and linguistically tailored cell phone voice messages or text messages related to breast cancer and prevention, compared to the control group, to determine which strategy is more likely to increase breast cancer knowledge and screening mammography among low-income Latina immigrants. This randomized controlled trial assigned 256 Latina immigrants 40 years of age or older to one of three groups: an automated cell phone voice message group, an automated text message group, or the control group (mail). Background: The current study identifies predictors and moderators of substance use outcomes for 111 adolescents with co-occurring substance use and psychiatric disorders who participated in a randomized controlled trial that compared the effectiveness of two home-based treatments: an integrated cognitive behavioral therapy (I-CBT) protocol, in which masters-level clinic staff received intensive training and ongoing supervision in the use of this protocol versus a treatment-as-usual (TAU) comparison condition in which therapists received a continuing education-style CBT workshop in the same protocol.

Method: The study conducted exploratory predictor and moderator analyses of marijuana and heavy alcohol use outcomes using candidate variables across four domains of psychological characteristics: adolescent substance use, adolescent psychiatric symptoms, parent, and family.

Results: Regardless of treatment condition, low parental monitoring at baseline, as assessed by a videotaped interaction task, but not self-report, predicted greater percentage of marijuana use and heavy alcohol use days over the 6-month follow-up period.

A New Ultrasensitive Bioluminescence-Based Method for Assaying Monoacylglycerol Lipase.

A novel bioluminescent Monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) substrate 6-O-arachidonoylluciferin, a D-luciferin derivative, was synthesized, physico-chemically characterized, and used as highly sensitive substrate for MAGL in an assay developed for this purpose. We present here a new method based on the enzymatic cleavage of arachidonic acid with luciferin release using human Monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL) followed by its reaction with a chimeric luciferase, PLG2, to produce bioluminescence. Enzymatic cleavage of the new substrate by MAGL was demonstrated, and kinetic constants Km and Vmax were determined.
