Article Synopsis
  • Spinal Arteriovenous Metameric Syndrome is a rare genetic vascular disorder that affects multiple tissues in the spinal region and can lead to serious complications.
  • A 20-year-old man experienced a sudden headache and temporary loss of consciousness, which was found to be linked to subarachnoid hemorrhage shown on imaging scans, with no cerebral abnormalities but significant spinal vascular issues identified.
  • The case highlights the rare connection between spinal vascular malformations and intracranial bleeding, suggesting that the hemorrhage may have been caused by abnormal blood flow from the spinal veins into the brain.

Isolated cuboid dislocation: case report.

J Surg Case Rep

August 2024

UNIFESP - Escola Paulista de Medicina - SP - Street Sena Madureira, 1500 - Vila Clementino, São Paulo - SP, 04021-001, Brazil.

Isolated cuboid dislocation without fracture is a rare injury, and there is a lack of literature describing its treatment. Studies report the use of closed or open reduction, with Kirschner wire fixation in the treatment of these injuries. This case report presents the clinical condition of a 24-year-old male patient who arrived at the emergency department with an isolated dislocation of the right foot cuboid bone without the presence of a fracture, after suffering trauma during a football game.

The efficacy and safety of dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) relative to intravenous (IV) alteplase in patients with acute minor ischemic stroke are insufficiently established. Therefore, we aimed to perform a meta-analysis to compare DAPT with IV alteplase in patients with acute minor stroke. MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane were searched for studies comparing DAPT with IV alteplase in patients with minor stroke.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined whether Mas-receptor activation by BIO101 could help balance the Renin-Angiotensin System and reduce severe respiratory issues in hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
  • It was a double-blind, randomized trial involving 238 participants, with findings showing a 11.4% lower rate of respiratory failure or early death in the BIO101 group compared to placebo.
  • Results suggest BIO101 may reduce the risk of severe outcomes in COVID-19 patients, although further research is needed due to the low sample size.

Purpose: Diagnostic cerebral digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is an invasive examination that involves catheterization of the major supra-aortic arterial trunks and evaluation of intracranial vessels for diagnostic purposes. Although considered the gold standard method for investigating cerebrovascular diseases, DSA carries measurable and potentially serious complication rates. This report describes the frequency of neurological and non-neurological complications of DSA performed in five hospitals in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, and analyzes them in different disease subgroups.

Cost analysis of photobiomodulation in tibia fracture in the Brazilian public health system.

PLoS One

December 2023

Postgraduate Program in Biophotonics Applied to Health Sciences, Universidade Nove de Julho (UNINOVE), São Paulo, SP, Brazil.

Managing tibial fractures requires substantial health resources, which costs the health system. This study aimed to describe the costs of photobiomodulation (PBM) with LEDs in the healing process of soft tissue lesions associated with tibial fracture compared to a placebo. Economic analysis was performed based on a randomized controlled clinical trial, with a simulation of the cost-effectiveness and incremental cost model.

Background: Prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) and fresh frozen plasma (FFP) are commonly used to manage bleeding in patients during cardiac surgery. However, the relative efficacy and safety of these 2 strategies remain uncertain.

Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane were searched for studies comparing PCC and FFP in patients who underwent cardiac surgery complicated by bleeding.

COVID-19 outcomes in hospitalized puerperal, pregnant, and neither pregnant nor puerperal women.

PLoS One

November 2021

Disciplina de Obstetrícia, Departamento de Obstetrícia e Ginecologia, Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil.

Objective: To compare hospitalized reproductive age women with COVID-19 who were pregnant, puerperal, or neither one nor the other in terms of demographic and clinical characteristics and disease progression using Brazilian epidemiological data.

Methods: A retrospective analysis of the records of the Information System of the Epidemiological Surveillance of Influenza of the Health Ministry of Brazil was performed. It included the data of female patients aged 10 to 49 years hospitalized because of severe COVID-19 disease (RT-PCR+ for SARS-CoV-2), from February 17, 2020 to January 02, 2021.

Unlabelled: Multi-drug resistant Gram-negative bacilli (GNB) have been reported as cause of serious hospital-acquired infections worldwide. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro activity of ceftolozane-tazobactam compared to other agents against GNB isolated from patients admitted to Brazilian medical centers between the years 2016 and 2017. Presence of β-lactamase encoding genes was also evaluated.

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common condition in women. There is an increased concern on reduction of bacterial susceptibility resulting from wrongly prescribing antimicrobials. This paper summarizes the recommendations of four Brazilian medical societies (SBI - Brazilian Society of Infectious Diseases, FEBRASGO - Brazilian Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics Associations, SBU - Brazilian Society of Urology, and SBPC/ML - Brazilian Society of Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine) on the management of urinary tract infection in women.

During gestation, a woman's body undergoes physiological changes that alter thyroid function. Pregnant women with hypothyroidism may exhibit gestational complications, including hypertension and preeclampsia. We investigated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in circulating RNAs from pregnant women with TSH levels just above the normal range to determine the impact of a mild elevation of TSH in pregnancy.

Background: Bariatric surgery is a successful method for weight loss in cases of morbid obesity; however, as an invasive procedure, surgical complications may occur. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been increasingly used due to its effectiveness in controlling the inflammatory response, accelerating tissue repair, and reducing pain. The objective of this study was to investigate photobiomodulation effects after bariatric surgery and determine the laser actions during the inflammatory process, wound healing (clinical observation), and analgesia.

Molecular Innovation and Biotechnology Laboratory, Post-Graduation Program in Medicine, Universidade Nove de Julho (UNINOVE), Rua Vergueiro, 235/249, Liberdade, São Paulo, SP, CEP: 01504-001, Brazil.

Cervical cancer (CC) is one of the most common cancers among women worldwide. The relation of the human papillomavirus (HPV) with CC and its precursor lesions was first suspected for over 40 years. The indoleamine 2,3 dioxygenase (IDO) is an immune modulator enzyme responsible for the immune system tissue protection mechanism, which may be the key to the tumoural persistence.
