  • Primary atopic disorders (PAD) are rare genetic conditions caused by specific gene variants that affect skin and immune function, making diagnosis challenging among common allergic disease cases.
  • Identifying PAD requires recognizing clinical red flags like family history and unusual infections, as conventional lab tests are inadequate for definitive diagnosis.
  • Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) enhances diagnostic efficiency and accuracy, but requires careful interpretation and collaboration among specialists to effectively manage PAD cases.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic that was spread worldwide since 2019 and showed a highly contagious character affecting the lifestyle of people worldwide causing symptoms that are not limited to the respiratory system only but had multi-systemic effects that may progress to severe complications that roughly affect people's health. A newly recognized SARS-CoV-2-associated syndrome called pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome has been described worldwide. Initially, it was reported as hyper-inflammatory shock and "Kawasaki-like" symptoms with fever and conjunctivitis, a similar syndrome is also reported in neonates and called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome of neonates (MIS-N).

Article Synopsis
  • Conjunctivitis can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies, and is very common, especially in primary care settings; there’s no clear way to tell viral from bacterial types just by symptoms.
  • Supportive treatments for viral and allergic conjunctivitis include artificial tears, cold compresses, and antihistamine eye drops, while strict hygiene practices are crucial to prevent spreading the infection.
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis is more frequent in children with distinct symptoms, and while immediate antibiotic prescribing can help, opting for delayed prescriptions can offer similar relief; patients with severe symptoms may need to see a specialist.

Discipline of Veterinary Science, College of Public Health, Medical and Veterinary Sciences, James Cook University, Douglas, QLD 4811, Australia; Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine, James Cook University Douglas, QLD 4811, Australia.

Canid alphaherpesvirus-1 (CaHV-1) may cause a highly fatal haemorrhagic disease in neonatal pups and is associated with reproductive, respiratory and ocular disease in older dogs. Although assumed to have a world-wide distribution, there have been few reports of CaHV-1 in Australia. The aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of CaHV-1 in household dogs in a residential suburb in Townsville, as well as in dogs attending two dog shows in the region.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the frequency of true ocular emergencies among patients seeking eye care in a general emergency department in Istanbul over one year.
  • Out of 652,224 patients, only 1.5% were referred to the Eye Emergency Clinic, with 13% classified as top eye emergencies, 60% as relative emergencies, and 27% as non-emergencies.
  • The findings suggest that many referrals are unnecessary, indicating a gap in emergency physicians' knowledge of ocular conditions, which contributes to misclassification of eye complaints.

Anaerobic bacteria can cause many infections in children. Because they predominant in the normal human skin and mucous membranes bacterial flora, they are often associated with bacterial infections that originate from these sites. They are difficult to isolate from infectious sites, and are frequently missed.

Background: Promotion of facial cleanliness is recommended for the elimination of blinding trachoma, largely because of observational studies that have found an association between various measures of facial uncleanliness and trachoma. However, when a field grader assesses both facial cleanliness and trachoma, associations may be biased. Assessment of photographs of the face and conjunctiva by masked graders may provide a less biased estimate of the relationship between facial cleanliness and trachoma.

Intersociety Position Statement on the Prevention of Ophthalmia Neonatorum in Italy.

Microorganisms

December 2023

Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Policlinico Casilino, Via Casilina 1049, 00169 Rome, Italy.

There is currently no worldwide agreement on the real need to administer conjunctival antibiotics to neonates at birth to prevent neonatal conjunctivitis (usually defined as ophthalmia neonatorum) by and . Therefore, there is wide variability in antibiotic administration, conditioned mainly by the social and health context. In Italy, a law enacted in 1940 required doctors and midwives to administer ophthalmic prophylaxis with 2% silver nitrate to all newborns at birth.
