Unlabelled: Although there is no indication for surgery taking only into account the glycemic condition, results have shown that benefits can be obtained in glycemic control with bariatric surgery.
Aim: To compare the glycemic behavior among type 2 diabetic and non-diabetic patients within 48 h after bariatric surgery, and clarify whether there is a reduction in blood glucose level in obese patients with diabetes before the loss of weight excess.
Methods: Descriptive epidemiological study with prospective cohort design with 31 obese patients undergoing Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy.
Background: The actual gold standard technique for obesity treatment is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. However, complications may occur and the surgeon must be prepared for them.
Aim: To evaluate retrospectively the complications occurrence and associated factors in patients who underwent bariatric surgery.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the results of thyroid surgeries with hospitalization periods shorter than 18 hours performed in a surgical endocrinology service, correlating these results with type of procedure, the definitive diagnosis and complications associated with the procedure.
Subjects And Methods: The procedures performed, complications associated, hospitalization period, and relationships among these variables were assessed in consecutive patients subjected to different types of thyroid surgeries from January 1997 to March 2014 by the same group of surgeons. Data were analyzed by frequency, and the associations between the hospitalization period and other variables were analyzed using the Pearson chi-square test and Fisher's exact test, using a multiple comparisons test with Bonferroni correction.

Patient discharge from the ICU is indicated on the basis of clinical evidence and the result of strategies aimed at improving health care. Nevertheless, some patients might be discharged too early. We attempted to identify risk factors for unplanned ICU readmission, using a score for risk assessment, designated the Stability and Workload Index for Transfer (SWIFT) score.

Trapezius muscle palsy after accessory nerve injury leads to periscapular pain and shoulder motion deficit. The results of accessory nerve repair generally are good, but surgery is difficult. The difficulty consists of finding the nerve stumps that are embedded in fat and scar tissue from previous surgeries or injuries.

Strongyloides stercoralis is an intestinal helminth of systemic distribution, which, once in its host, has the ability to perpetuate itself through an autoinfection cycle, leading to chronic infection. In healthy hosts, the parasite usually does not cause any symptoms, or only mild symptoms that are limited mainly to the small intestine. However, in immunocompromised hosts, uncontrolled multiplication with massive infection may occur, causing hyperinfection syndrome or disseminated strongyloidiasis, which are both associated with high morbidity and mortality.

The authors report a case of deficiency of the eighth component of complement in a young adult with a history of three episodes of meningitis; one of them proved to be meningococcal. The literature was reviewed and meningitis due to Neisseria meningitidis strains causing disease in complement-deficient and complement-sufficient patients was demonstrated. Meningococcal disease may be the first manifestation of complement deficiency; screening for complement function must be considered for those with invasive meningococcal disease, with posterior evaluation of the components of the terminal pathway of complement.
