Purpose: In this work, a new method to determine the gradient system transfer function (GSTF) with high frequency resolution and high SNR is presented, using fast and simple phantom measurements. The GSTF is an effective instrument for hardware characterization and calibration, which can be used to correct for gradient distortions, or enhance gradient fidelity.
Methods: The thin-slice approach for phantom-based measurements of the GSTF is expanded by adding excitations that are shifted after the application of the probing gradient, to capture long-lasting field fluctuations with high SNR.

Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) is common among older people and is associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis, inflammation, and shorter overall survival. Age and inflammation are major risk factors for ischemic stroke, yet the association of CH with risk of secondary vascular events and death is unknown. This study aims to show the feasibility and benefit of single queries in a research data warehouse combining data from a hospital's clinical and imaging systems. We used a comprehensive integration of a production picture archiving and communication system (PACS) with a clinical data warehouse (CDW) for research to create a system that allows data from both domains to be queried jointly with a single query. To achieve this, we mapped the DICOM information model to the extended entity-attribute-value (EAV) data model of a CDW, which allows data linkage and query constraints on multiple levels: the patient, the encounter, a document, and a group level.

Mitochondria are central organelles in the homeostasis of the cardiovascular system via the integration of several physiological processes, such as ATP generation via oxidative phosphorylation, synthesis/exchange of metabolites, calcium sequestration, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production/buffering and control of cellular survival/death. Mitochondrial impairment has been widely recognized as a central pathomechanism of almost all cardiovascular diseases, rendering these organelles important therapeutic targets. Mitochondrial dysfunction has been reported to occur in the setting of drug-induced toxicity in several tissues and organs, including the heart.

Mitochondria are paramount to the metabolism and survival of cardiomyocytes. Here we show that Mitochondrial Fission Process 1 (MTFP1) is an inner mitochondrial membrane (IMM) protein that is dispensable for mitochondrial division yet essential for cardiac structure and function. Constitutive knockout of cardiomyocyte MTFP1 in mice resulted in a fatal, adult-onset dilated cardiomyopathy accompanied by extensive mitochondrial and cardiac remodeling during the transition to heart failure.

Methodology: Unselected adult residents of the German federal state of Schleswig-Holstein with Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-test-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection were invited to participate in this large cross-sectional study. Data on the medical history and subjective chemosensory function of participants were obtained through questionnaires and visual analogue scales (VAS).

Background: A high body mass index (BMI) is often associated with metabolic syndrome, which is accompanied by systemic low-grade chronic inflammation. Here, we analyzed whether BMI, other components of metabolic syndrome, and/or inflammatory markers correlate with left ventricular geometry, function, and infarct size as assessed by serial cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) after a first (clinically evident) ST-elevation MI (STEMI).
Methods: Within the Etiology, Titre-Course, and effect on Survival (ETiCS) study, cardiac MRI conducted 7-9 days and 12 months after MI enabled longitudinal characterization of patients with a first STEMI along with serial routine blood counts and multiplex cytokine measurements.

Aims: Cellular communication network factor 1 (CCN1) is an independent predictor of MACE after ACS and elevated levels correlated with infarct size after STEMI. We compared the prognostic accuracy of baseline levels of CCN1, NT-proBNP, hsTnT, and ST2 and changes in levels over time to predict the development of structural and functional alterations typical of LV remodelling.
Methods: Serial 3-T cMRI scans were performed to determine LVEF, LVEDV, LVESV, infarct size, and relative infarct size, which were correlated with serial measurements of the four biomarkers.

Aims: Effective and safe decongestion remains a major goal for optimal management of patients with acute heart failure (AHF). The effects of the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor empagliflozin on decongestion-related endpoints in the EMPULSE trial (NCT0415775) were evaluated.
Methods And Results: A total of 530 patients hospitalized for AHF were randomized 1:1 to either empagliflozin 10 mg once daily or placebo for 90 days.

Previous genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of stroke - the second leading cause of death worldwide - were conducted predominantly in populations of European ancestry. Here, in cross-ancestry GWAS meta-analyses of 110,182 patients who have had a stroke (five ancestries, 33% non-European) and 1,503,898 control individuals, we identify association signals for stroke and its subtypes at 89 (61 new) independent loci: 60 in primary inverse-variance-weighted analyses and 29 in secondary meta-regression and multitrait analyses. Background: Patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) with and without diabetes mellitus have an increased risk of recurrent events requiring multifactorial secondary prevention of cardiovascular risk factors. We compared prevalences of cardiovascular risk factors and its determinants including lifestyle, pharmacotherapy and diabetes mellitus among patients with chronic CHD examined within the fourth and fifth EUROASPIRE surveys (EA-IV, 2012-13; and EA-V, 2016-17) in Germany.

Aims: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have an increased risk of cardiovascular events and exhibit myocardial changes including left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and fibrosis, overall referred to as 'uremic cardiomyopathy'.
