The Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) last published clinical guidelines on venous thromboembolism (VTE) and cancer in 2019, with a partial update in 2020. In this new update to the guidelines, SEOM seeks to incorporate recent evidence, based on a critical review of the literature, to provide practical current recommendations for the prophylactic and therapeutic management of VTE in patients with cancer. Special clinical situations whose management and/or choice of currently recommended therapeutic options (low-molecular-weight heparins [LMWHs] or direct-acting oral anticoagulants [DOACs]) is controversial are included.

Due to their extensive use, the release of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NP) into the environment is increasing and may lead to unintended risk to both human health and ecosystems. Access of ZnO NP to the brain has been demonstrated, so their potential toxicity on the nervous system is a matter of particular concern. Although evaluation of ZnO NP toxicity has been reported in several previous studies, the specific effects on the nervous system are not completely understood and, particularly, effects on genetic material and on organism behaviour are poorly addressed.

Introduction And Objective: Clinical manifestations secondary to amyloid deposition in connective tissue may allow early detection of amyloidosis. We sought to identify the prevalence of connective tissue amyloidosis in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery and evaluate for cardiac involvement.
Material And Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study that included patients >50 years referred for orthopedic surgery at our center.

Introduction And Objectives: Transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis (ATTR-CA) is a frequent cause of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). This study sought to determine the prevalence of ATTR-CA among HFpEF patients in a multicenter nationwide study.
Methods: Consecutive ambulatory or hospitalized patients aged ≥ 50 years with HFpEF and left ventricle hypertrophy ≥ 12mm were studied at 20 Spanish hospitals.

Objectives: Acute oral mucosal damage, as well as other inflammatory processes seem to be related to dysbiosis of the oral microbiome. The need to study changes in the oral microbiome led us to hypothesize what type of sample would provide the most representative picture of the entire human oral microbiome.
Materials And Methods: An observational, and cross-sectional study was carried out.

Objectives: We aimed to compare the stability of the newly developed β-lactams (cefiderocol) and β-lactam/β-lactamase inhibitor combinations (ceftazidime/avibactam, ceftolozane/tazobactam, aztreonam/avibactam, cefepime/taniborbactam, cefepime/zidebactam, imipenem/relebactam, meropenem/vaborbactam, meropenem/nacubactam and meropenem/xeruborbactam) against the most clinically relevant mechanisms of mutational and transferable β-lactam resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Methods: We screened a collection of 61 P. aeruginosa PAO1 derivatives.

Liquid biopsies have been identified as a viable source of cancer biomarkers. We aim to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of cell-free DNA integrity (cfDI) in liquid biopsies for cancer. A comprehensive literature search was conducted through PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library up to June 2024.

Background: To infer a reliable SARS-CoV-2 antibody protection level from a serological test, an appropriate quantitative threshold and solid equivalence across serological tests are needed. Additionally, tests should show a solid correlation with neutralising assays and with the protection observed in large population cohorts even against emerging variants.
Objectives: We studied convalescent and vaccinated populations using 11 commercial antibody assays.

Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is extensively used to fabricate biocompatible microfluidic systems due to its favorable properties for cell culture. Recently, ultraviolet-curable PDMS (UV-PDMS) has shown potential for enhancing manufacturing processes and final optical quality while retaining the benefits of traditional thermally cured PDMS. This study investigates the biocompatibility of UV-PDMS under static and flow conditions using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs).

Background: Computer-aided detection (CADe) systems for colonoscopy have been shown to increase small polyp detection during colonoscopy in the general population. People with Lynch syndrome represent an ideal target population for CADe-assisted colonoscopy because adenomas, the primary cancer precursor lesions, are characterised by their small size and higher likelihood of showing advanced histology. We aimed to evaluate the performance of CADe-assisted colonoscopy in detecting adenomas in individuals with Lynch syndrome.

Introduction And Objectives: Our aim was to describe the characteristics and outcomes of heart transplants in Spain.
Methods: We analyzed trends in recipient and donor characteristics, recipient-donor interaction, surgical procedures, immunosuppression, and outcomes of patients included in the Spanish heart transplant registry from 2014 to 2023. Changes in survival were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method.
Purpose: To identify risk factors predisposing patients to poor outcomes after fixation of periprosthetic hip fractures around femoral stems.
Methods: Prospective multicentre cohort study of fractures around a hip replacement stem managed by internal fixation. The primary outcome was one-year mortality, while secondary outcomes were local complications and healthcare burden-related outcomes (nursing facility utilization and hospital length of stay).

Introduction: Allergic rhinoconjunctivitis (AR) is an IgE-mediated inflammation of nasal and ocular mucosa after environmental allergen exposure, mainly by house dust mites (HDM). AR affects more than one third of the population worldwide and it is associated with loss of quality of life (QoL).
Aim: To analyse the improvement in the QoL in 50 patients with moderate-persistent AR due to house HDM before and after receiving 1 year of subcutaneous specific aeroallergen immunotherapy treatment (SAIT).

Gastric cancer (GC) is the fifth most common cancer worldwide with a varied geographic distribution and an aggressive behavior. In Spain, the incidence is lower and GC represents the tenth most frequent tumor and the seventh cause of cancer mortality. Molecular biology knowledge allowed to better profile patients for a personalized therapeutic approach.

Aims: The aim of this study was to report safety and efficacy of aficamten in patients with non-obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (nHCM) over 36 weeks in the ongoing FOREST-HCM trial.
Methods And Results: Patients were started on aficamten 5 mg daily, with doses adjusted in 5-mg increments (5-20 mg) at ≥2-week intervals according to site-read left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). Aficamten dose was increased if LVEF ≥55%, maintained if LVEF 50-54%, decreased if LVEF 40-<50%, and temporarily interrupted if LVEF <40%.

Background: In standard weaning from mechanical ventilation, a successful spontaneous breathing test (SBT) consisting of 30 min 8 cmHO pressure-support ventilation (PSV8) without positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) is followed by extubation with continuous suctioning; however, these practices might promote derecruitment. Evidence supports the feasibility and safety of extubation without suctioning. Ultrasound can assess lung aeration and respiratory muscles.
