This study analyzed recent changes in the utilization of allogeneic HCT for treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myeloproliferative diseases (MPD) and the survival of HCT recipients ≥60 years of age in Brazil. This retrospective registry study included patients who received a first allogeneic HCT from any donor between 2012 and 2023. Of the 6657 patients, 444 (7%) were 60 years of age or older who received grafts from HLA-matched related (42%) or unrelated (20%) donors or HLA-haploidentical donors (32%).

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is a relatively rare genetic disorder, inherited in an autosomal codominant manner, that results in reduced serum AAT concentrations, with a consequent reduction in antielastase activity in the lungs, as well as an increased risk of diseases such as pulmonary emphysema, liver cirrhosis, and necrotizing panniculitis. It results from different mutations in the SERPINA1 gene, leading to changes in the AAT glycoprotein, which can alter its concentration, conformation, and function. Unfortunately, underdiagnosis is quite common; it is possible that only 10% of cases are diagnosed.

Early onset sepsis: clinical observation or risk factors approach?

J Pediatr (Rio J)

November 2024

Universidade Federal do Paraná (UFPR), Complexo Hospital de Clínicas, Unidade Materno Infantil - Alojamento Conjunto e Centro Cirúrgico Obstétrico, Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil.

Objectives: To compare the perinatal risk factors approach for early-onset sepsis (EOS), which is based on categorical risk stratification, with the clinical observation-based approach, evaluating their impact on laboratory testing frequency, the use of antibiotic therapy, and EOS incidence.

Methods: Retrospective observational study, conducted from November 2021 to March 2022. Newborns (NB) at 34 wk of age were included and clinical data from prenatal care, birth, hospitalization, and laboratory tests were evaluated.

Introduction: Amphotericin B lipid complex (ABLC) is an effective antifungal agent for treating invasive fungal infections (IFIs) even though its formulation is associated with potential adverse events, including those related to its infusion. This study aimed to analyze the incidence of acute infusion-related side effects (IRSE) associated with ABLC and their relationship with the profile of patients with oncohematological disease admitted in Brazilian reference tertiary hospitals.

Methods: This is an observational retrospective study that included clinical records of patients hospitalized, in a period of 6 years, diagnosed with probable or proved IFI and treated with at least two doses of ABLC.

This article presents a case study of a 7-year-old female patient with a history of acute myelogenous leukemia, previously treated with chemotherapy. The patient developed acute right peripheral facial paralysis and right upper limb weakness, leading to the discovery of an extra-axial solid lesion at the right cerebellopontine angle. This lesion extended into adjacent structures with notable contrast enhancement and restricted diffusion on magnetic resonance imaging, indicative of chloroma, an extramedullary solid mass composed of myeloid precursor cells.

Triple inhaled therapy in asthma: Beliefs, behaviours and doubts.

Pulm Pharmacol Ther

December 2024

Respiratory Diseases and Allergy Department, IRCCS Polyclinic Hospital San Martino, Genoa, Italy; Department of Internal Medicine (DiMI), University of Genoa, Italy. Electronic address:

Long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMA) in association with inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) plus long-acting beta-2 agonists (LABA) are recommended by the GINA report as further option in step 4 and first choice in step 5 treatment. Despite consistent evidence of its efficacy and safety, inhaled triple therapy (ITT) is still not largely used in patients with asthma. With the aim to explore belief and behaviours of asthma specialists, an ad hoc survey has been developed by a panel of Interasma Scientific Network (INESnet) experts and subsequently defined by two Delphi rounds among an international group of physicians.

Background: Subarachnoid hemorrhage evolving with cerebral vasospasm and delayed cerebral ischemia may increase morbidity and mortality. Treating vasospasm with balloon percutaneous angioplasty (PTA) in adults is well known, but data in preschool children are scarce. In addition, the smaller diameters and fragility of the vessels in childhood might lead to serious complications.
