Stem Cell Research Group, Department of Research in Sexual and Reproductive Health Research, Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies, Avenida Justo Arosemena y Calle 35, Panama City, Republic of Panama.

Background: Intrauterine fetal demise is a recognized complication of coronavirus disease 2019 in pregnant women and is associated with histopathological placental lesions. The pathological mechanism and virus-induced immune response in the placenta are not fully understood. A detailed description of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2)-induced inflammation in the placenta during fetal demise is crucial for improved clinical management.

Article Synopsis
  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic, incurable disease characterized by periods of remission and relapse, with increasing global prevalence.
  • A comprehensive review involved healthcare professionals and patients to formulate clinical questions, retrieve evidence from various databases, and provide recommendations using the GRADE system.
  • For treatment, budesonide MMX is recommended for mild-to-moderate UC, while moderate-to-severe cases may utilize therapies like infliximab and adalimumab, with alternatives available if initial treatments fail.

is a versatile bacterial species able to acquire antimicrobial resistance; the species presents a higher antimicrobial resistance profile compared to Carbapenemase and extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing bacteria commonly arise in clinical settings where antimicrobial stewardship is limited. Our study aims to report the phenotypical and genetic characteristics of nosocomial isolates associated with mortality collected from a tertiary-level hospital in Panama City. In October 2020, 11 consecutive multidrug-resistant Gram-negative isolates were recovered from secretions and blood cultures from hospitalized patients.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 detected in placentas of 2 coronavirus disease 2019-positive asymptomatic pregnant women-case report.

AJOG Glob Rep

February 2021

Department of Virology and Biotechnology Research, Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies, Panama City, Republic of Panama (Ms Gaitán, Ms Chen-Germán, Ms Araúz, Saenz and Dr López-Vergès).

There is limited evidence regarding severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 infection in the placenta of pregnant women who tested positive, and if this could be a route for vertical transmission of the virus in utero. We present the cases of 2 pregnant women in their third trimester who were admitted for delivery by cesarean delivery and who, through universal screening, tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019. The maternal and fetal sides of the placenta were sectioned from both patients for viral analysis.

Novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is the etiologic agent of the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, which has reached 28 million cases worldwide in 1 year. The serological detection of antibodies against the virus will play a pivotal role in complementing molecular tests to improve diagnostic accuracy, contact tracing, vaccine efficacy testing, and seroprevalence surveillance. Here, we aimed first to evaluate a lateral flow assay's ability to identify specific IgM and IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and second, to report the seroprevalence estimates of these antibodies among health care workers and healthy volunteer blood donors in Panama.

Treatment of complex aneurysms often requires additional surgical tools including the use of the extra-intracranial (EC-IC) bypass. The following report depicts the utilization of the EC-IC bypass in treating a dissecting aneurysm several hours after a salvage emergent evacuation of an acute subdural hematoma via decompressive craniectomy (DC). Preserving the superficial temporal artery during the DC provided a donor artery for the bypass surgery.

Background: The adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine (Shingrix) can prevent herpes zoster in older adults and autologous haemopoietic stem cell transplant recipients. We evaluated the safety and immunogenicity of this vaccine in adults with haematological malignancies receiving immunosuppressive cancer treatments.

Methods: In this phase 3, randomised, observer-blind, placebo-controlled study, done at 77 centres worldwide, we randomly assigned (1:1) patients with haematological malignancies aged 18 years and older to receive two doses of the adjuvanted recombinant zoster vaccine or placebo 1-2 months apart during or after immunosuppressive cancer treatments, and stratified participants according to their underlying diseases.

Hospitalization for heart failure (HF) places a major burden on healthcare services worldwide, and is a strong predictor of increased mortality especially in the first three months after discharge. Though undesirable, hospitalization is an opportunity to optimize HF therapy and advise clinicians and patients about the importance of continued adherence to HF medication and regular monitoring. The authors review the penile ultrasound records of 47 patients referred from the Urology Service with a diagnosis of Erectile Dysfunction. The pear systolic and and diastolic pressures were measured every 5 minutes for 30 minutes after the intracavernous injection of 60 mg of Papaverine, as well as the diameter of the cavernous arteries before and after the injection which was made using a 25 gauge needle. A tourniquet was applied at the base of the penis while injecting and was kept in place for 2 minutes after the injection was completed.

The authors report the clinical history of a 15 years old young man with severe congenital pulmonary valvular stenosis who was treated, for the first time in Panama, with percutaneous balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty (PBPV). The patient presented with an episode of syncope at rest. The EKG showed right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH) and suggested the presence, with the echocardiogram, of pulmonary systolic pressures higher than the systolic systemic pressures.

The purpose of this study was to show that the nonionic contrast media of low osmolarity are better tolerated than ionic media of high osmolarity, which to date are most frequently used in the authors hospital. We found that adverse reaction occurred in 80% of the group in which nonionic contrast medium was used. The authors conclude that nonionic, low osmolarity contrast media significantly reduce the frequency of adverse reactions and increase their safe use.
