Beyond the internalism/externalism debate: the constitution of the space of perception.

This paper tackles the problem of the nature of the space of perception. Based both on philosophical arguments and on results obtained from original experimental situations, it attempts to show how space is constituted concretely, before any distinction between the "inner" and the "outer" can be made. It thus sheds light on the presuppositions of the well-known debate between internalism and externalism in the philosophy of mind; it argues in favor of the latter position, but with arguments that are foundationally antecedent to this debate.

A molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP), templated with methyltestosterone, has been synthesized for the cleanup of hydrolyzed urine samples for subsequent testosterone (T) quantification by LC-MS/MS. A concentration of 2 ng/mL testosterone could be quantified after a single step extraction on the MIP. The limit of detection and quantification with the criteria of a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 and 5 were 0.

This paper proposes an in vitro hemodiafiltration (HDF) model in which the patient is represented by a 2 L bag of fresh heparinized bovine blood circulated by a 4008H monitor through a 0.6 m2 hemodialyzer to investigate kinetics of bicarbonate (HCO,) during online post-dilution HDF. Five tests were carried out, with three ultrafiltration rates, zero (HD test), 30 and 50 ml/min.

We demonstrate, on the example of trypsin, the use of water-soluble molecularly imprinted polymer microgels as specific enzyme inhibitors. Using a strong anchoring monomer, methacryloylaminobenzamidine, the growing polymer chains are confined to close proximity of the substrate recognition site of our model enzyme. The microgels bind selectively trypsin over other proteins of similar size and molecular weight, and show competitive inhibition of trypsin with an inhibition constant K(i) of 79 nM, making them more potent inhibitors than the low molecular-weight competitive inhibitor benzamidine by almost 3 orders of magnitude.

We describe the use of Raman spectroscopy to detect and quantify, for the first time, the presence of the imprinting template in single molecularly imprinted polymer microspheres. The polymers were imprinted with the beta-blocking drugs propranolol and atenolol, and precipitation polymerization was used to obtain spherical particles of diameters of 200 nm and 1.5microm.

A beta-estradiol receptor binding mimic was synthesised using molecular imprinting. Bulk polymers and spherical polymer nanoparticles based on methacrylic acid and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the functional monomer and crosslinker, respectively, were prepared in acetonitrile. The selectivity was evaluated by radioligand binding assays.

We propose the use of Doehlert's experimental design, a second-order uniform shell design, for the optimization of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). We have chosen a simple model system where the influence of kind and degree of cross-linking on template recognition was studied using S-propranolol as the template. We found that Doehlert's design allows--with very few experiments--one to screen the evolution of the binding capacity of a MIP as a function the different parameters, and thus appears to be a powerful means to screen for the best composition and synthesis method for MIPs.

We have used fountain pen microlithography to deposit arrays of molecularly imprinted polymer microdots on flat substrates. We visualize analyte binding to the dots by fluorescence microscopy with the aid of fluorescein as a model analyte. Elution and readsorption of the analyte to the MIP dots were possible if the porosity of the dots was improved by a sacrificial polymeric porogen.

Mechanical properties of alginate beads hosting hepatocytes in a fluidized bed bioreactor.

Fluidized bed bioartificial liver has been proposed as a temporary support to bridge patients suffering from acute liver failure to transplantation. In such a bioreactor, alginate beads hosting hepatocytes are in continuous motion during at least six hours. After having shown in vitro the functionality of such a device, the present study aims at analyzing the potential mechanical alterations of the beads in the bioreactor, perfused by different surrounding media.

Fast and reliable active appearance model search for 3-D face tracking.

This paper addresses the three-dimensional (3-D) tracking of pose and animation of the human face in monocular image sequences using active appearance models. The major problem of the classical appearance-based adaptation is the high computational time resulting from the inclusion of a synthesis step in the iterative optimization. Whenever the dimension of the face space is large, a real-time performance cannot be achieved.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to model the relationship between training and performance in 13 competitive swimmers, over three seasons, and to identify individual and group responses to training.

Methods: A linear mixed model was used as an alternative to the Banister model. Training effect on performance was studied over three training periods: short-term, the average of training load accomplished during the 2 wk preceding each performance of the studied period; mid-term, the average of training load accomplished during weeks 3, 4, and 5 before each performance; and long-term, weeks 6, 7, and 8.

On the basis of the article by the Dutch botanist Hugo De Vries 'On the law of separation of hybrids' published in the Reports of the Académie des Sciences in 1900, and the beginning of the controversy about priority with Carl Correns and Erich von Tschermak, I consider the question of the posthumous influence of the Mendel paper. I examine the construction of the new theoretical framework which enabled its reading in 1900 as a clear and acceptable presentation of the rules of the transmission of hereditary characters. In particular, I analyse the introduction of the idea of determinants of organic characters, understood as separable material elements which can be distributed randomly in descendants.

Rejection of the maternal electrocardiogram in the electrohysterogram signal.

The electrohysterogram (EHG) signal is mainly corrupted by the mother's electrocardiogram (ECG), which remains present despite analog filtering during acquisition. This article proposes a method to evaluate the ability of the electrohysterogram signal to characterize the contractions during pregnancy, in a population with high risk of preterm deliveries. This study constitutes a first stage of a project intended to develop a monitoring system for the early diagnosis of preterm deliveries. After a proper signal denoising, we calculate some parameters characteristic of the extracted contractions.

Additional data about thermolysin specificity in buffer- and glycerol-containing media.

Synthesis and use of various substrates permit an improved approach to thermolysin-peptide recognition and elucidation of several new criteria affecting enzyme specificity. Nature and position of the recognized residue, role of adjacent amino acids, lateral chain hydrophobicity, and volume and length of peptides were all considered. Hydrolysis reactions were also carried out in the presence of glycerol; the effect of microenvironment modifications was quantitative, for example in inducing variations in catalytic reaction rates, and also qualitative, such as in influencing affinity.

The addition of water-soluble cosolvents in the reaction medium of type 1 soybean lipoxygenase can modify the selectivity of the enzyme in the hydroperoxide synthesis reaction. This also results in changes in secondary reactions such as carbonyl compound formation. The possibility of a conformational change of the enzyme due to variations in its microenvironment was considered.
